Aselsan continues development activities regarding electro-optical systems. CATS has been improved and continues to be improved. Major improvements are:
  • A more efficient dual gain detector is used, based on InSb in the place of MCT.
  • Internal temperature reduced to lower the 'noise' that the sensors are subjected to.
  • Weight reduced from 62kg to 56kg and further weight reduction underway to 55kg.
  • Changing algorithms and the use of filters allows the CATS to see the laser designator both during day and night, with work underway to see all the pulse repetition frequency codes necessary to guide munitions.
  • Adding two more FoV's between 3.2 degrees and 30 degrees in the near future.
  • Beam divergence of the laser designator (25km max range) was improved from 0.5 mrad (5m beam diameter at 10km) to 0.3 mrad (3m beam diameter at 10km).
  • Laser range finder has a range of 30km.
Thanks to Aselsan's studies and cooperation with East-Asian and Chinese companies, Aselsan accessed HD detector technology and started the development of the Aselflir-F500C system. Aselsan carries out dozens of detector programs from various resolutions, detector material, both cooled and uncooled.

The Aselflir-F500C comes with the following capabilities:

afbeelding_2021-07-31_121641.png

  • Improved thermal sensors, imageprocessing, hardware, weight reduction and optimization of the overal system performance compared to the CATS.
  • Like the CATS, the Aselflir-F500C also uses a common aperture for the HD MWIR (1280x1024 15μm pixel pitch), HD SWIR (1280x1024 10μm pixel pitch) and FHD (1980x1080) visual camera.
  • Unlike other systems, the Aselflir-F500C will see the laser spot on all 3 sensors.
  • Weight is around 50kg and diameter 15 inches.
  • Preliminary and detailed design planned to be completed this year and serial production phase is expected to start in 2022.
  • Aselflir-F500C is to be used on tactical UAV's, helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.

Aselsan has started the 'new generation gimbal development project'. It is aimed to develop better performing gimbals with the use of direct motors on the outer axes and linear motors on the inner axes. Further improvements are in weight reduction and structural strength to withstand higher wind loads at higher speeds and vibrations of the platform.

Aselsan has also introduced a new product called the Aselflir-600 made for HALE UAV's such as Aksungur and Akinci. Thanks to its bigger size of 22 inches and the improvements of the 'next generation gimbal development project', it will be able to have better performance.

afbeelding_2021-07-31_121656.png

  • Use of linear motors on the inner axes improves the stabilization which allows the installation of very high magnification sensors.
  • Increased laser output and decreased beam divergence is possible by the larger room available in the gimbal for laser modules.
  • Use of HD MWIR and FHD or higher visual camera. (Possibly also HD SWIR like on the Aselflir-F500C)
Finally, Aselsan has recently begun development of a new product situated between the mini-gimbal class and 15 inch class for use on short-range and tactical UAV platform.

Damn, we are ahead of the schedule. Development is farther away than my previous data. The first complete cooled MCT HD sensor package (ROIC, FPA, Cooler) will appear in 2022 which means there is probably something in the lab as of today.

Mikrotasarim has recently added extra info and files on their two 1280x1024 15μm pixel pitch ROIC:

This one is stated to be used on 1280×1024 15µm SWIR InGaAs FPA.

Then this one is probably for the MWIR but no PDF available

Something is weird. The article states that the SWIR 1280x1024 camera has 10μm pixel pitch but Mikro-Tasarim's website only has 1280x720 in 10μm. Minor mistake on @Defence Turkey part or Mikro-Tasarim hasn't updated the website yet?

EDIT: THE 10μm PIXEL PITCH FOR THE SWIR IS NOT A MISTAKE!

Baykar DIHA has very advanced capabilities. If they want to retain, add those capabilities to small form, it is going to be challenging to develop especially the electronic parts.

We still did not develop platforms to fill the gap between handheld, man portable UAVs and MALE classes.

Where will we find the machines/benches to produce these detectors?
Detectors are produced in something called semiconductor clean rooms with a lot of equipment for various tasks. These tasks can be thermal treatment (ovens), thin film depositions (reactors), lithography, wet chemistry, plasma processes and so forth. So, there isn't just a single machine/equipment for the production but a complex factory.

These are very similar to clean rooms to produce your typical electronics parts such as CPUs. The difference is the type of material you process. Electronics typically use silicon as base material while thermal detectors typically use materials just left and right of silicon in the periodic table. These materials are called group II/VI (2/6) or III/V (3/5) materials while silicon, germanium and carbon are group IV (4) materials. Though modern visual detectors, i.e. camera sensors also use silicon since it is the cheapest. Btw, silicon is the basic compound of typical sand/silica/quartz.

Turkey has a few such cleans rooms to produce both silicon based electronics such as CPUs and optic based materials for detectors at moderate advanced levels.

Helicopter Obstacle Detection System is coming to an End

hets_haber_ic.jpg

With the completion of the Active Helicopter Obstacle Detection System (HETS) design phase, we continue our works with full effort to complete the platform integration and flight tests in the first half of 2021 in coordination with the 5th Main Maintenance Factory Directorate and the Army Aviation Command.

We have signed the fiber laser-based Active Helicopter Obstacle Detection System Project contract in 2019 with the Turkish Republic Presidency of Defense Industries to improve the aircraft navigation safety in low-altitude flight conditions, especially helicopter platforms.

As Meteksan Defense, we continue to work on sensor design, signal processing hardware and embedded software required by LIDAR systems, together with our high level of competence in laser production operating in different bands, high efficiency, high beam quality, different power ranges and different modulation types. By combining these competencies with the Active HETS Project, we are implementing a system that enables to deliver the warnings to pilots against collisions with the wire/obstacle, which has an important place in the crash of helicopters.

With completion of the system which will has low power consumption and low weight, and can be integrated into different platforms, especially existing and new generation general purpose helicopters, the LIDAR/LADAR infrastructure that can be used in a wide variety of applications shall also be achieved

  • Nusret-1915 mine detection sonar will be completed (along with the test and certification) by the following year (2022), it is expected to be installed on Engine class MCMW vessels and soon to be announced national MCMW vessel project. The sonar is also expected to be used on USVs via a scaling down.

  • Orkun-2053 dipping sonar will be completed nearly on the similar schedule as Nusret-1915 and expected to be installed on ASW helicopters and another variant to be installed on USVs and tested on Q1 2022.

  • Armelsan is working on a signal form called PRN for sonar systems, it will be unique to the turkish sonar systems and enhance their performance on detection.

  • Armelsan, with Aselsan, is going to offer a scalable multi-static sonar systems deployed by a team of USVs enhancing mapping and ASW capabilities, also by switching from pulse-type active sonars to "always-on" type active sonars, the ASW techniques will be enhanced remarkably. Typically, despite of loosing a certain power due to the scaling down of the sonar systems on a USV, a team of USVs will be able to scan an area larger than what a frigate may do, moreover, frigate's powerful sonar can be used as signal emitters and USV sonars located at far distances can be set as a receiver, using dynamic position, multi-static configuraiton, underwater objects or threats will be "mapped" with a finer resolution and will be detected at longer distances.

  • Melis-2071 is told to be in serial production phase, thus we may safely assume the wet-end of the Aselsan's Fersah is manufactured by Armelsan.

  • Armelsan also aims to develop a sonar-performance analysis software which is bound to export licenses and prone to be sanctioned.

  • The sonar systems will achieve 90% and above national contribution at the serial production phase, however, the expectation for prototype phase is around 60%

How would it perform in foggy weather? I guess lidar won't work well in such circumstances.
