Despite big plans, Nature and other experts believe that Turkey's contribution to the world's space will still be modest. So, now the 2019 budget of the Ministry of Science of Turkey is up to $ 0.4 billion. For comparison, NASA received $ 20.7 billion in 2018.

Firms like Aselsan, Roketsan also fund projects with their own resources including space tech

A lot needs to improve but comparing budget to NASA is not productive. Indian ISRO have $2 billion budget. India is in top 10 for space technology, they are no NASA. You can do a lot more with $2 billion in India than US. Labor is cheap, access to big human capital. etc.

Fixing Turkish economy is a good start, we should start with education

There is only one NASA.

More pragmatic targets could be a tier below Japanese or Indian space programmes. Maybe try to match Israeli or Iranian fledgling programmes first. I hear that Korea and Taiwan are racing to advance their space programmes.

It wasn't developed with Russian assistance, it uses a ready-made Russian engine.

I had Somalia in my mind, it's very close to Equator. However, Somalia is not an entirely stable country.

Indonesia is going to make a satellite launch station in Biak, Papua, inshaAllah. A very close to Equator and already secure some land there (100 hectare). Lapan is also seeking partner as well. Biak is very ideal, not only close to Equator but also quite save as well if you see the vast sea near the island.

One Indonesian made a rational explanation of why Biak is very ideal in the Jakarta Post comment section

1. It needs to be close to the equator. Biak is only 1.0381° S while Jakarta is 6.2088° S. To be fair the Kennedy Space Center is further from the equator than Jakarta but that is the best option for the US considering the second optimal condition.

2. It is better to have an ocean to the east. Why to the east? Because it is better to launch the rocket to the east because it will go against the earth's rotation so it will save fuels and increase speed. The rockets will launch to the Pacific Ocean not to the room of Papuans.

Interesting to be honest. Never knew this. Indonesia is a like a rare gem.

It has beautiful islands, the most unique biodiversity on the planet. No wonder its situated such an important place on this planet.

I hope Indonesia reaches its space potential.

Thank you bro although we are currently being lead by older generation who dont understand the important of R&D. They of course want this country to develop many things, but after they know the cost, they are backing down, very pathetic.

Just compare UAE who spend 10 billion USD just for importing missiles from US and here we feel reluctant to spend 2 billion USD to finance our own fighter program despite Korea who burden 80 % of the total cost. Same thing with Space Agency (Lapan) and other research agency that get huge spending cut this year despite government spending hugely to recover the economy due to pandemic.......

Cost has always been important but really the older gen have to change their tune its about the long term development and the benefits it brings to Indonesia. Older gen wont be alive to see the fruits.

They need to think of the new gen rather than being stingy. Money comes and goes we cant take it to the grave.
