On the 9th of January 1916, the last remaining Allied troops on the Gallipoli peninsula were evacuated. Despite catastrophic predictions, the withdrawal went off without a hitch and the entire force escaped with only a few casualties. It was the only bright spark in a campaign marked by failure.

After naval attempts to force the Dardanelles straight failed, the amphibious landings had fared even worse. Fierce Ottoman opposition stopped the Allies in their tracks and trench warfare quickly took hold. There were heavy casualties on both sides, not only from the fighting but from the terrible conditions. After a succession of failed attacks, the decision was finally made to withdraw.

In this episode of IWM Stories, Alan Wakefield explores what went so wrong at Gallipoli and why the evacuations were the only success.

The Allies really underestimated the Ottomans.

Due to the Ottomans collapsing the Allies thought they could easily sweep the Ottomans aside and make them surrender.

But nope it did not work out like that. Never underestimate your enemies no matter how weak they may seem.

Churchill believe all it took was a bunch of Dreadnoughts to make the Turks surrender. After that failed he moved the goalposts even more.

What a joke of a man. It is said he never took responsibility for the failure.

He didn't take responsibility for anything, he was a mommy's boy and his mother protected him. He was a writing and a journalist before going into politics. I means why on earth was he first sea lord? Why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not just that. The main reason for failure of the campaign lay in internal British politics: Churchill was a naval politician in what was predominantly land war. Naturally, he sought to increase the standing of his office in political terms - and this was the reason behind most of his harebrained ideas, be it the Gallipoli campaign or the proposed plan for the amphibious invasion of Germany.

To be fair Britain's strength was always her navy and her politics. She was never really perceived as some fierce fighting machine. That's why the Turks at arguably their weakest point for the past 1000 years was still able to inflict a major defeat against united British/French invasion, while also holding off Russia in the east of the country. Russia a country only 30 years later would go on to become Europe's number 1 power.

Britain, France and Russia had hundreds of millions in terms of sheer population. At that same point the Ottomans in total were about 18 million. And its no secret that the minorites within the empire, greeks, armenians, kurds, arabs were not only not really fighting for the Ottomans but were actively engaged with siding with the invading armies.

Gallipoli campaign was intended to force Germany's ally, Turkey, out of the war.
Is divided in two parts.
At the beginning, started as a naval campaign, with British battleships sent to attack and occupy Istanbul. This failed when the warships were unable to force a way through the Dardanelles.
1/3 of the battleships were sunk or disabled only on 18 March 1915.
The second one, was the occupation of the Gallipoli peninsula.
The campaign was a success only to the part of the attraction of large Turkish forces away from the Russians. But is known, the plan failed to produce decisive results because of poor military leadership, faulty tactics including complete lack of surprise, the inexperience of the troops, inadequate equipment, and an acute shortage of shells.

Gallipoli became a disaster for the Allies because of Sultan Abdulhamid's defence infrastructure at the Dardanelles that he planned and build years before the war.

When the putschist Young Turks (nobody of them were real Turks by the way) removed him from the throne, luck by accident they didnt remove the defence fortifications that he installed.

nah he was a disaster, lost most of the empire. The sultans needed to go. For hundreds of years they had been failing the Turks. The fact the young Turks came in and reorganised the army to western standards was important but not enough in the end. It was for Ataturk to create a new state, Ottomans almost left us with nothing.

The reality is the results. The Ottomans had been on a 200 year decline, there was nothing to suggest that the same Ottomans(Osman dynasty) were going to turn anything around. We became the sick man of europe for reason. Ironically under Islamist AK party we are now considered a middle eastern nation, not even good enough to be considered part of europe.

On every metric and in every field the Ottomans fell behind the great powers of europe. To make matters worse the religious class were given too much power and influence and went around destroying schools and places of learning claming it was haram to discover Allahs secrets.

I honestly wish the Turkish people could just wake up from their brainwashing and focus on results. We can't keep going back to an era of complete failure, the world has moved on.

No more sultans, no more caliphs, no more nonsense.

religion is one those things were it makes wise men wiser and foolish men more stupid. Give religion to a moron and he turns into a bigger moron. Watch a wise man delve into religion and it will open his mind to perceive the world at a higher level. A fool has no comprehension skills and is easily mislead, deceived and manipulated. His conclusions almost always border on the ridiculous. But any wise man you know that's delved into religion perceives it in a completely different way and the religion doesnt lead him into self destruction.

Abdulhamid II laid orders for the dardenelles to be mined but sea mines also extended into the black sea to keep Russians out.

Sea mines were done because the navy was not good enough. Due to wide range of factors like money, tech and abdulhamid ii fearing a coup from the navy.

Credit where its due it was smart to sea mine the dardanelles because it was a bottleneck.

But having a shit navy is what caused gallipoli to happen. In ww1 even if you keep gallipoli out.

The allies still ravaged our ports with blockades and naval bombardments. While their submarines sunk our supply ships.

In 1918 they bombed istanbul with planes. It was pretty shitty overall when you look at the situation.

Young turks as usual destroyed the empire and lost wars. If abdulhamid ii gets called out the young turks do too.

Dont forget how talaat and jemal ran away from the country while at least enver had the face to die for his ideals in central asia.

Yep they did, two rights dont make a wrong. But the young Turks took over a rotting decaying empire. The Osmanli had hundreds of years to put things right.
