Aksungur will be furnished with Goktug Class air to air missiles too.
As these UAVs are very long endurance class platforms, they would be ideal against other UAVs and rotor bladed air vehicles. So both Akinci and Aksungur having air to air missiles, will greatly decrease the necessity for F16s to take to air each time a UAV threat is registered. This will also eliminate the use and expenditure of Air defence missiles against UAVs.
Since air to air missile technology, quite often stated as the “nirvana” of all missile technologies, those countries that have capability to produce them sell them at exorbitant prices. Saudi Arabia last year, paid 650million dollars for 280 latest spec amraam aim120C missiles. That makes around 2.3 million dollars a missile. (they paid 8.5 million for the 596 LAU128 rails out of this. The rest were for the missiles)
We can expect the cost of our equivalent Gokdogan missiles to be a fraction of this.
As well as huge savings we will have, we will also be in a position to use them more freely at targets as cheap as UAVs. (But it is also important to note that by eliminating a cheap UAV with an expensive missile we are not wasting money. That UAV threat could cost more to us if it were allowed to perform it’s mission.)
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a possible FMS of AIM-120C AMRAAMs to Saudi Arabia.
