Intelligence: "Paramilitarization" of Russia has accelerated dramatically
Over the past 20 years, Russia has seen an increase in the number of paramilitary groups in addition to the country's regular armed forces.
However, this "paramilitarization" has accelerated dramatically after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022 - it has become an especially important element in the annexed Crimean peninsula.
This is what it says in the latest update on the war from the British Ministry of Defence.
- According to the British, Crimea's Russian-appointed prime minister, Sergej Aksenov, has contributed significantly to the creation of several local units.
- Most of these units have been given a semi-official status as reserve units in the regular army, it says.
"Aksenov is probably worried about the ability of the regular army to defend the peninsula," the ministry assesses.
