It's very strange to start talking about peace talks especially considering that Ukraine hasn't received any fighter jets atm. So the narrative from western news isn't a good sign.

It would be good if Ukraine could rout the Russian forces and take whole Kherson region back to the borders of Crim. But Russia is going to pour everything into avoiding that. So it'll be very costly unless air superiority can be established, soon and fast.

Could older Light trainer jets be fitted with glider bombs to make a difference ? otherwise the drone is the way to go along with guided artillery.

Ukraine has broken a special line: "It's a huge boost"

Ukrainian soldiers have recaptured an area east of the village of Krasnohorivka in Donetsk.

It has great symbolic meaning. Because it is the first time that Ukraine is recapturing one of the areas that has been occupied since Russia and pro-Russian militias invaded Ukraine in 2014. "

It is a huge boost for the Ukrainian will to fight," says Berlingske's Nordic correspondent Peter Suppli Benson, who has reported from Ukraine and followed the war closely.

"It was a sort of forgotten and stuck line for a long time. So it's a blow to Russia's head - and shows that Ukraine and Zelenskyij mean it when he says that they want all the land back,' he says.

Krasnohorivka is not an area where there has been heavy fighting for a long time. When Ukraine advances here, it shows that they are still testing the possibilities of a major breakthrough.

"An increasingly clear picture emerges of a Ukrainian army that is still just trying to find its way, looking for weaknesses in the Russian front line - and hiding the newly trained soldiers and parts of the many new Western tanks and combat vehicles. Ukraine can throw them in when they find weak points in the front line - it's about being able to hit hard, do it quickly, and take advantage of the fact that the Russian forces are clearly slow to react,' says Suppli Benson.

The Western press isn't realistic in their demands. What awaits the Ukraine soldiers are the densest consentration of fixed fortifications in Europe (and prolly world) since the 20th Century, with barbed wires, dragon's teeth, minefields, interconnected trenches and camouflaged pillbox. Zaluzhnyi, the commander of Ukraine should take into considerations the fact that Ukraine doesn't have that much men (40 mil pop) and equipment to throw around, unlike the Russians (140 mil pop).

Ukraine active frontline against Russia is around 1000km, just for comparison Iran-Iraq frontline during their war is around 700km. It took 8 years for both sides to throw men and equipment and what they achieve in the end is largerly the same.

In fact, I don't remember any major military offensive (safe from Desert Storm) achieve blitzkrieg like advance anywhere in the last 50 years or so.

lots of shills in the western world for Russia. Dont forget how certain journalists were saying that the best thing Ukraine could do is surrender at the start of the war. If Russians can buy out senior political figures, they can buyout journalists.

The counter attack is going how i would expect it too. It will start slow as Ukraine whittles down Russian positions and incrementally escalate as time passes. Eventually they will reach a critical point where defensive positions will collapse.

Ukraine cannot afford meat grinder tactics of Russia, but they can afford to take their time. As long as her friends and allies supply her she is in no rush.

also interesting how Russia only yesterday could have entered into a civil war and we get headlines attacking the Ukrainian counter offensive, as if to divert from the critical Russian position.

Reminder that while Ukraine has slowly started its offensive in the West, we still have not seen the majority of the troops that Ukraine is preparing for the offensive engaged in any kind of serious battles. They've used a small amount of the Western donated supplies that they've had donated, but I think it's important to remember how much armor they've recently been donated (and continue to have donated) that they haven't yet engaged with in any serious manner.

Main Battle Tanks
14x Challenger 2
31x M1A1 Abrams
28x M-55S
60x PT-91 Twardy
45x T-72
89x Leopard 2A4/5/6 (6 destroyed)
130x Leopard 1A5

Infantry Fighting Vehicles
154x Bradley M2 (16 destroyed)
60x Marder
50x CV-90
40× AMX-10RC (3 destroyed)
150x Rosomak
20x Patria Pasi

Armored Personnel Carriers
125x Stryker
700+ M113
250x M1117
60x VAB (9 destroyed)
20x Fennek
20x Valuk
28x Bandvagn

Not even counting the artillery, or the hundreds of IMVs and MRAPs, nor Ukraine's own equipment that they're using for the offensive, Ukraine has lots of armor left yet, despite "doom-and-gloom" folks out there that are being brainwashed by Russian propaganda.

This guy can be insanely ignorant at times and hyperbolic at other times, but the general message of this is correct. Its why i say to allow any peace settlement that warrants Russia land means you set up another invasion.

Basically, it comes down to this. The West / Ukraine cannot allow this war to end in peace until the Soviet stockpile of weapons is essentially exhausted (we're talking 60% attrition). Russia no longer has the economy to build like the Soviets, therefore, the West knows that if they can collectively spend a couple hundred billion dollars to neuter the Russian Army, they'll eliminate them as a serious threat to NATO countries for a generation (at a reasonable cost).

This is particularly important to the United States, who wants Russia weakened and NATO in Europe strengthened to the point where they can focus their attention solely on China's rise to challenge. An expanded NATO, featuring Sweden 🇸🇪, Finland 🇫🇮 and eventually, Ukraine 🇺🇦 will be able to handle Russia on their own, backstopped by Poland 🇵🇱, Britain 🇬🇧 Germany 🇩🇪, France 🇫🇷 and Turkey 🇹🇷, all of whom are expiditing the modernization of their militaries, many as a result of this conflict.

The U.S. will be able to pull more than $80 Billion in ANNUAL funding for Europe's defense, and re-allocate that money towards preparing for the Chinese threat from the Pacific. The USA wants to spend more money elsewhere, but before they can afford to do that, the Soviet stockpile of weaponry has to be largely destroyed. Ukraine is willing to be the country that facilitates that destruction, therefore, USA (and their allies) are willing to fund it. This is especially true because the overwhelming majority of the military aid being sent to Ukraine ranges from completely outdated to semi-outdated and was created specifically with a land war against Russia in mind. This equipment is serving its purpose. The next war will be fought very differently, therefore, there is no point saving this equipment for a conflict it will have no bearing on.

Everyone is doing their part. Lithuania 🇱🇹 will send two NASAMS air defense launchers to Ukraine. For those interested, a full NASAMS battery consists of 3 launchers, each with 6 AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9 Sidewinder, or IRIS-T SLS missiles. Therefore, Lithuania's contribution will be combined with a 3rd launcher from another party, to form a full battery.

A NASAMS Battery provides range coverage for between 30km-50km, depending on the type of missile it fields. It can intercept all non-balistic missiles and drones that Russian uses to attack Ukraine. It's a tier 2 air defense system, integrated along with tier 1 systems such as Patriot and SAMP/T, which can handle all Russian missiles, including their ballistic missiles.

Layered air defense is extremely important for Ukraine. NASAMS contributes significantly to that layering.
