War is ending up in a stalemate with no side gaining any kind of advantage.

Ukraine has bascially successfully stood up and is still fighting while Russia bascially failed to end this war.

Russia still occupies 20% of Ukraine. Russia right now is on the defensive while Ukraine is on the offensive.

Ukraine's offensive only afforded them minor gains. The big push never happened because the Russians are dug in.

Explains why the Russians withdraw from a lot of lands as they focused on holding that 20% especially Crimea now they are dug in conpletely.

We are in a ww1 like situation where the armies with the most men and materiel will win but at a high cost.

We are now reaching the 3rd year of the war and with no end in sight. War weariness is setting in both sides.

Most people who are interested in wars and in geopolitics are still keeping up with the Ukraine-Russia war while in the mainstream media and in the mainstream public it has all but disappeared. I guess this is the result of conflicts lasting long that people lose interest.

Putin should be happy with that and start talking about a peace process, this constant throwing of meat and steel is stupid. I don't think the Russian air force will be ready for another 5 years to be decisive. Only when the Russian air force has completely transformed can Putin restart the war again.

Peace talks are a non-starter at the moment, given that Putin's condition will be that all Ukrainian territory in Russian control is ceded to Russia. There is also the complication that 4 oblasts in the war zone have been annexed by Russia. I do not think that Russia can legally give away parts of itself to another country.

Footage of Russian Su-30SM and Su-24MR aircraft patrolling the waters of the Crimean coast and attacking a detected naval drone of the Ukrainian army has been published. The video shows a Su-30SM aircraft firing a 30mm GSh 30-1 aircraft cannon at a Ukrainian army naval drone. The firing range of the GSh 30-1 aircraft cannon against surface and ground targets is up to 1800 meters, the rate of fire is 1500 rounds per minute. The model of the Ukrainian maritime drone and the date of the attack are unknown.

Back in the Iran-Iraq war, both Saddam Hussein and Khomeini insisted on :
  1. Capitulation of the Islamic Republic (Iraq)
  2. Fall of the Baathist Republic (Iran)
Yet in 1982 and 1988, both sides eventually dropped demand due to situations on the ground, for Iraq, they dropped the demand after suffering defeat at Khorramshahr (1982), and for Iran, they eventually accepted peace after defeat at the Faw Peninsula (1988).

Putin as a statesman should know when and where to fight, does the situation permits him to continue, or whether does situation necessitates him to freeze conflict. The problem with continuing the war is simple, very high cost for very little gain.

Peace doesn't necessarily mean ending the war, the two Koreas for example, are technically still at war since hostility erupted in 1950. DPRK still insisted that they are the legit Korea and all of the Peninsula rightly belongs to them, vice versa applies to the ROK.
