I'm trying to get a grasp of the current strength of the Ukrainian Air Force based on visually confirmed losses and deliveries that we're aware of. This is what I've come up with...
F-16 Fighting Falcon
Approximate units in service: 22
It was recently reported that Ukraine currently fields 22 units after 4 have been lost (2 in combat and 2 on the ground). Of the 22 units noted, an unknown number of those are currently being housed in Romania, where they're being used to train Ukrainian pilots. In total, 85 units have been committed to Ukraine and they will continue to arrive throughout 2026 and beyond, as Ukrainian slowly builds up it's cadre of pilots to fly them. F-16 Pilot Training continues in USA
, Canada
, Romania
and Denmark
. We also know that USA and Norway
have both sent retired airframes to Ukraine to be salvaged for spare parts to support the fleet.
Mirage 2000-5F
Approximate units in service: 9
While never made official, it's been reported that France delivered 10 units to Ukraine. 1 has been lostnin combat, while the remainder likely remain in country and operating mission sets. France
and Ukraine are currently in conversation about doubling the number of committed units to 20 total, however, pilots training is slower than F-16 training as it onoy takes place in France.
Mig-29
Approximate units in service: 30-35
Ukraine started the war with approximately 50 Mig-29s in service, with an unknown number in storage. They received an additional 14 units from Poland
, 13 units from Slovakia
and it's suspected that 3 units from Azerbaijan
that were being upgraded in Ukraine at the outset of the war joined Ukrainian service. Meanwhile, 34 units have been visually lost throughout the war, meaning that out of approximately 80 units, 46 would remain. That said, a number of those are probably being canabilized for spare parts, leaving 30-35 units operational.
SU-27
Approximate units in service: 23-25
Ukraine was operating approximately 40 units at the outset of the war, with a further 15-20 units being used for spare parts. 17 units have been visually lost in combat and it's possible that a couple from storage were brought back into combat shape. No countries have supplied units to Ukraine that we're aware of.
SU-25
Approximate units in service: 20-25
Ukraine began the war with 40-45 flyable units and they received 4 additional airframes from North Macedonia
and as many as 14 additional units from Bulgaria
. During the war there is visual evidence of 23 destroyed units. Others have likely been removed from service to be used as spare parts. The remaining units likely consist of approximately 2 squadrons.
SU-24
Approximate units in service: 8-10
Ukraine had approximately 25 units in service at the outset of the war. They've been visually confirmed to have lost 14 units, however, it's been heavily rumored that they had several in storage that may have been brought back into service. Ultimately, attrition has been high and usable units are probably limited at this point.
