According to the information received by the AA correspondent, HAVELSAN, which offers the unmanned autonomous ground vehicle BARKAN to the security forces, continues its efforts to provide new capabilities to the vehicle.

During the year, ROKETSAN's guided mini missile METE was fired from the BARKAN 1 vehicle, while this time, kamikaze ammunition was fired from BARKAN 2 for the first time. BARKAN became the first in its class with the integration of loitering ammunition, also known as the "kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)".

BARKAN is a system with two hydrogen-supported launchers (one launcher is a laser-guided system, one launcher is a wandering ammunition) connected to a single tower and can be fired at the same time, while performing tasks and activities in an area with a radius of 2 to 15 kilometers. Gürbağ Defense's ammunition for reconnaissance, surveillance and kamikaze purposes The shot was made successfully.

Firing this type of ammunition and multiple launchers from a single tower via an unmanned ground vehicle is considered a first in the international arena.

Preparation for the battlefield of the future

HAVELSAN Product Development and Production Director Veysel Ataoğlu told the AA correspondent that they delivered the BARKAN unmanned ground vehicles, which they developed in the Medium-1 category, to the Turkish Armed Forces within the scope of the project carried out by the Presidency of Defense Industries.

Stating that they carried out training with the vehicle in the field, Ataoğlu stated that they expect mass production demands to come at the end of this process.

Explaining that they increased the mobility of the BARKAN 2 vehicle, Ataoğlu stated that they integrated different payloads into the vehicle.

Stating that they have finally integrated the BARKAN launcher system that can operate in an area with a radius of 2 to 15 kilometers, Ataoğlu said, "We have completed our firing and testing activities. The payload, which we call circulating ammunition, can be used as a swarm and can be integrated with other systems, making the work of the soldiers in the field easier, like a pioneer unit of the force." "We are carrying out trial studies for an application that can play a role. We integrated this system into our vehicle in cooperation with Gürbağ Defense." said.

Emphasizing that they are trying to create the battlefield concept of the future by integrating these and similar systems into the Mixed Swarm Operations Center they developed, Ataoğlu stated that they evaluated a number of products of different companies in this context and completed the integration activities.

But what's the warhead? Unless it is several kgs, let's say 3 for example, it is pretty useless as we already have kamikaze drones that 1 soldier can carry and use with about the same range and payloads. Nice to have it as a proof of concept I guess.

Again, no mention of the warhead, and I think they cut the video short because they didn't show the loitering munitions hit either 😄 I'd rather this thing carry 8 or more Mete, if that launcher had 4 Mete mini missile in it, instead of 1 small loitering munition.

Hell, I know some people who would love to have something like this follow them around instead of lugging those damn grenade launchers with them 😁

AFAIK that loitering munition meant to be used against the other drones.

So some additional info:

The loitering munition is called GST (Gürbağ Savunma Teknolojileri???) Harpa 350. It has an operational radius of 15 km and an endurance of 40 minutes. It is the same munition used in the test of Hydro-GIDS where an UAV was shot down.

GSPT EFE can use "mini laser guided missiles" which hints at METE missiles.


I believe we will see GSPT EFE evolve into a YALMAN like system as the concept progresses. Hydrogen launch is not only safer but is also more agnostic. As long as anything fits there and is integrated to the system, not much would hold you back unlike traditional systems where you might have to develop new launchers.

I believe the most important thing for us to master is autonomous movement for UGVs. If we don't have to control them directly and instead just send them commands for them to follow in the zone they are operating, it would make our lives so much easier against jamming or other electronic counter measures. It has got to be safer and easier to just send commands on a low bandwidth rather than continuously control it.

I think this is the goal of the "Karma Sürü" project from HAVELSAN. And then add the KERKES project from STM to it.

Turkish Land Forces have mor than 2000 M40 recoiless guns. Only God knows how many thousands of 105mm ammunitions they have.

I don't think in the 21 century our soldiers would use them manually.

M40 recoiless guns are seriously destructive, 105mm ammunition has 8-10kg warhead.

The gun has totally high velocity so it could hit as accurate as tank.

Just make them unmanned.


Recoiless guns are ideal for unmanned platforms as the vehicles should be light and compact.

Besides recoiless guns , no heavy cannon could be applied currently on UGVs.

Turkish defense industry will conduct surveillance with "baby drone"

Tansel Nuran Birdir stated that the widest length of the large drone in HİRO is 28 centimeters, the size of the "baby drone" is 10-15 centimeters, and its weight is limited to 100-150 grams.

Birdir pointed out that the entire weight of HİRO, including the modems, will be less than 1 kilogram, and emphasized that the product can work both outdoors and indoors with all these features it has.

A micro drone that can go on the ground especially in closed environments and hard to get places and autonomously decide whether it needs to use the propellers to overcome an obstacle.

Still in prototype phase and adjustments are yet to be made after rigorous tests.

Estimated to be ready for service around the end of the first quarter of 2024.

Guys, as you know we are paying a very high price in our operations in the north of Iraq. The main problem there are the long deployments close to tunnel networks. Many of these locations are open to harassment and infiltrations.

We entered a state in which previously tested and effective methods of destroying tunnels and neutralizing terrorists are no more effective due to the structure of the tunnels which are kilometers long, labyrinth type, multi-floor full of tight spaces and traps.

It is reported that different ways of entering the tunnels are tested including dogs and mini UGVs. According to sources the mini-UGVs have trouble with communication in bigger depths.

I as many people am thinking about possible solutions to the problem with the tunnel networks by using my logic and verifying my thoughts trough different sources in social media and the internet. In result I concluded that we need a modular mini UGV or even a family of mini UGVs controlled by a fiberoptic cable. This way we would ensure a high speed data transmission that is not influenced by the depth and obstacles.

Such UGVs can be equipped with advanced 360o E/O system, IED detection/disposal tools, communication devices and could also play a kamikaze role by being equipped with explosive payload.

Look at all the UGVs in this picture. Mini, light, medium heavy classes equipped with wide variety of tools and means. I think that all or at least the majority UGVs in this picture can be equipped with a fiberoptic cable control.

Size of tunnel will make all the difference in just finding them let alone defeating a large group. Fiber cable or AI quadcopterS with explosives and algorithms to map out and scout different directions could be useful or not depending on the details. Drones, dogs, soldiers all will be easy targets for those waiting for them with booby traps and weapons.

I have no idea how effective gas will be since again so many parameters... But purely legally speaking as an option to try, tunnels could be filled with white phosphorus IF feasible. We signed anti chemical weapons treaty, so nerve gas and chlorine are out, but white phosphorus is classified as incendiary not a chemical weapon. It is not legal to use them in civilian settlements though despite Russian, America, Israeli etc. violators . It is completely legal to use them against terror tunnels on some mountain top. A powerful fan and FULL on white phosphorus hazmat suits are a must. Once it starts burning it is not possible to stop white phosphorus. These tunnels have multiple exits. So wide area should be watched by drones from the top for days in case they escape from the back.
