Most likely because you were somehow stuck in Jakarta Happen to most foreigners here, either they were stuck in Jakarta or in Bali, thus their miss perception of Indonesia were largely due to their experience at any of those 2 places, or worse by reading English language news & the dreaded Wikipedia

I have been to many unusual (for tourists) places in Indonesia, this might surprise you however.

when i was in my adulthood , i remember buying this thing during outing class to central java and ended up with severe food poisoning in losmen ..... , and the brem inside the packaging only filled the middle section with empty air on both side of package , what a scam .
