Houthis have struck the Saudi capital in Riyadh, with multiple reported strikes at the King Khalid Airport. (?)
In retrospect, their attacks on Saudi Arabia will be regarded as a watershed in consolidating U.S.-Israeli plans for the region.
The petty war of the Houthis is about control of key coastal cities as well as the oil-rich Marib-Shabwa region of Yemen, allowing them to consolidate their grip over key resources. They have the full backing of IRGC, who also want to damage regional oil infrastructure and impose costs on regional states, since Iran’s own infrastructure has been hit.
In any case, it is a lose-lose situation for the region.
The Yemen war will only intensify, since the areas the Houthis are trying to occupy will inevitably invite resistance from local tribal and religious groups that have never been under the Saada-based Houthis. The Saudis will consequently have more incentive to support anti-Houthi groups.
On the oil infrastructure, the Iranians are doing a great service to the U.S. Damaged regional oil infrastructure would open the way for the U.S. to capture a larger share of the global oil market as part of its strategic competition with China.
It is not hard to guess who will fill the void when regional states are being pitted against one another. The Iran-U.S. dynamic works in mysterious ways.
This reminds me of Theodor Herzl, who said in year 1895:
“The anti-Semites will become our most dependable friends; the anti-Semitic countries our allies.”
