Indonesia-UAE open negotiations on comprehensive trade deal

Bogor (ANTARA) - Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday started negotiations within the framework of the Indonesia-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IUAE-CEPA) to strengthen bilateral trade and investment between the two countries.

"We are proud to launch the IUAE-CEPA negotiations, which also mark a new chapter of trade relations between the two countries," Indonesian Minister of Trade, Muhammad Lutfi, said at a ceremony held in Bogor, West Java on Thursday for the launch of negotiations.

While signing a joint statement on the launch of the IUAE-CEPA negotiations with the Minister of Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates, Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Lutfi said the cooperation is an important effort made by the two nations to increase trade that could benefit the economies of both countries and the welfare of the people.

The launch also marks the start of the first round of IUAE-CEPA negotiations, which will be held on September 2-4, 2021. The two countries have committed to complete the comprehensive economic agreement within one year of its launch or by 2022, Lutfi informed.

The Minister of Trade said he believes the IUAE-CEPA can be completed within one year because pre-negotiations have been carried out. In addition, the UAE has also committed to signing the cooperation agreement immediately.

"We see that the UAE wants to finish quickly. So, there is trade in goods, trade in services, investment, those are important things to discuss in negotiations. So, I think this can be completed in a year or even sooner," Lutfi said.

The agreement to increase economic cooperation through the IUAE-CEPA was reached during meetings between Lutfi and Al Zeyoudi on April 8, 2021 and March 30, 2021.

As a comprehensive agreement, Lutfi noted, the initiative will cover market access, rules to facilitate trade and investment, as well as cooperation.

“CEPA must be a reliable and inclusive economic platform that will elevate various business sectors of all scales, from multinational companies to small and medium enterprises,” he said.

According to the Minister of Trade, there are three main things that make CEPA important for Indonesia and the UAE. First, historically, CEPA is Indonesia's first negotiation with a country in the Gulf region, and this is the first negotiation for the UAE with trading partners in Asia, he said.

Second, Indonesia and the UAE, as two main economic powers, need to strengthen cooperation so that they can complement each other, he added. Especially, in this challenging time of the pandemic, new breakthroughs are needed to encourage the economies of the two countries, he said.

Third, CEPA is expected to not only be a partnership or cooperation between the two governments (G to G), but also between business actors (B to B) and the people of the two countries, he added.

CEPA is expected to further build trust between the two countries to increase trade and investment as well as the intensity of meetings for sustainable cooperation, Lutfi said.

Related news: Indonesia, UAE committed to driving economic transformation: minister

He emphasized that the IUAE-CEPA can significantly boost productivity, innovation, job creation, business collaboration, and contribute to poverty alleviation in both nations.

Minister Al Zeyoudi said the UAE's longstanding bilateral relationship with Indonesia is based on close cultural ties and a shared commitment to enable greater economic development and the prosperity of the people of the two countries.

“The IUAE-CEPA is built on the strong economic relationship between the UAE and Indonesia. The IUAE-CEPA will be the basis for a closer partnership for mutual progress by creating new opportunities, attracting greater investment and employment, and accelerating global economic recovery," Minister Al Zeyoudi said.

He is scheduled to hold an honorary meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo on September 3, 2021.

Indonesia targets rehabilitating 34,000 ha mangrove areas this year

23rd September 2021

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Mangrove areas, spanning a total area of 34 thousand hectares (ha), will be rehabilitated this year, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated after planting mangrove trees in Tritih Lor Village, Cilacap District. North, Cilacap, Central Java Province, on Thursday.

"We will continue to conduct mangrove rehabilitation, both by the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency and also by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Our target in 2021 is to cover some 34 thousand hectares," the president noted.

Mangrove rehabilitation is becoming increasingly important for the preservation of mangrove forests that can help to address the ongoing impacts of climate change.

According to the head of state, mangroves are expected to reduce wave energy, protect the coast from abrasion, inhibit water intrusion, and improve coastal habitats and the environment.

Jokowi also expressed hope that the presence of mangrove forests would increase the production of fish and other marine resources. Hence, fishermen can get more fish and be able to earn higher incomes.

"Especially crabs, we just got two crabs earlier. We are optimistic that it would increase the local people's income," according to the president.

Following the mangrove tree planting event, the president and his entourage headed to the state high school SMA Negeri 2 Cilacap to review the implementation of vaccination for students and to greet the vaccination participants at several other schools via video conference.

He also reviewed the implementation of the door-to-door vaccination drive for villagers in the Sentolo Kawat fisherman's area, South Cilacap Sub-district.

Before returning to Jakarta, the head of state released hatchlings on Kemiren Beach, South Cilacap.

President Jokowi's entourage comprised Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung; head of the Presidential Secretariat, Heru Budi Hartono; Presidential Military Secretary M. Tonny Harjono; Commander of the Presidential Security Detail (Paspampres), Major General Tri Budi Utomo; and Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media at the Presidential Secretariat Bey Machmudin.

Logistics industry has made major progress during pandemic: AGROS

These problems require solutions that utilize information technology—a technology-based and one-stop service system that focuses on integrated solutions to optimize raw material logistics services
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Goods shipments have shot up by up to 40 percent in Indonesia due to improvements in the logistics industry in the last two years and amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the CEO of AGROS has said.

The positive impact of infrastructure in logistics has been happening because of the government's activities in the past decade that have enhanced various industries in Indonesia, logistics industry player and the founder and CEO of AGROS, Arman Solich, said here on Saturday.

"However, this does not mean that the logistics industry is free from challenges," he added.

In addition to the rising need for product distribution, the demand for heavy fleets to transport raw materials for industries has also increased, he pointed out.

As a result, many new players have sprung up in the industry, he said.

Related news: Sumadi stresses on transportation connectivity to strengthen logistics

However, the positive trend in the raw material logistics industry has not been supported by efforts to beat the existing challenges, he added.

The issues facing the industry range from classic problems, such as the complexity of fleet management, transparency, and standardization of costs, to the need for simplification of transaction systems and ease of supervision in the digital era, Solich said.

"Witnessing the huge potential growth of the logistics industry, we want to give solutions for each challenge that exists in the future. We prepare all needs from upstream to downstream sectors so that all parties in the industry can enjoy the benefits," he expounded.

Despite the research and observations made on the logistics industry, most problems have recurred because industry players have continued to use conventional methods to operate instead of integrated systems, he noted.

Related news: Expert calls to evaluate Bulog's role in rice supply chain

The problems also include shippers facing difficulty finding fleets to transport goods, confusion among transporters in finding cargo, and the need for experienced cargo drivers, he said.

Other issues plaguing the industry include a non-transparent bill recording system, disorderly administration of shipment permits, as well as the search for quick fixes to vehicle damage on the road, he added.

"These problems require solutions that utilize information technology—a technology-based and one-stop service system that focuses on integrated solutions to optimize raw material logistics services," he informed.

Since it was established in early 2020, AGROS has managed to complete as many as 102,306 logistics transactions, with a total transport tonnage at 2,183,156 tons, he added.

INDONESIA TO BECOME NO.2 STAINLESS STEEL PRODUCER

Published: 04 Jun 2021
Indonesia to become No.2 stainless steel producer

Driven by huge capacities commissioned by Chinese companies, Indonesia is about to overtake India as the second largest stainless steel producer in the world in 2021, according to projections presented at the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) annual conference held virtually last week, Kallanish notes.

Indonesia, which presently ranks fourth in global stainless steel production, will produce 4.2 million tonnes this year, up 75% year-on-year, the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) said. On the other hand, ISSDA predicts that India’s output is expected to reach 3.5mt this year, an increase of 9.4% y-o-y following 2020’s 17.9% y-o-y decrease.

Indonesian surplus production may be targeted at Indian markets, ISSDA president KK Pahuja said.

“Stainless steel capacity of 5.5 MT is ready in Indonesia. On the other hand, the Chinese government has withdrawn export tax rebate in May 2021, which will restrict the export of stainless steel from China. As a result, exports from China may come down, while exports from the same Chinese companies in Indonesia will rise significantly. We estimate that import intensity from Indonesia will nearly double,”he explained.

The expectation is to provide Indonesia's remote regions electricity by constructing easy and affordable plants.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has said that Indonesia's electrification ratio reached 99.4 percent in the first half of 2021, reflecting an increase of 0.2 percent compared to the year-ago period.

"The electrification ratio currently has reached 99.4 percent. Next year, we target 100-percent electricity on all households," ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif remarked at the 2021 Subroto Awards here on Tuesday.

The development of electricity, oil, and gas infrastructure continues to be accelerated to achieve energy resilience and sovereignty, he said.

The ministry has also bolstered minerals and coal processing and refining, he informed.

In addition to perfecting the electrification ratio, there are two other programs that are being prioritized by the government, which pertain to the ratio of electrified villages and service quality, he said.

To meet these targets, the government has prepared several strategies along with state electricity company PT PLN, Tasrif informed.

The strategies have been adjusted as per field surveys and adapted to the individual needs of regions, he said.

Related news: East Kalimantan PLN electrifies Ambalat Beach, donates Rp560 million

The strategies include enabling network expansion or grid extension by connecting villages or households that are close to PLN grids, the minister said. In 2021, there are 24 villages targeted for network expansion, he added.

Furthermore, mini-grids comprising local renewable energy-based plants will be built for community groups living in 37 hard-to-reach villages this year, he informed.

New renewable energy plants, electric charging stations (SPELs), and electricity distribution devices (APDALs) will also be built to serve people in remote areas, he added.

At least 20,711 units of APDAL, or electricity tubes, will be provided for 285 villages in 2021, he said adding their provision will be supported by this year's state budget. The SPEL will be funded by PLN, he continued.

Another strategy that is being pursued by the government to boost electrification is the construction of solar power plants (PLTS) and the development of rural electricity sources, Tasrif said.

The expectation is to provide Indonesia's remote regions electricity by constructing easy and affordable plants, he added.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The contribution of the energy and mineral resource sector to the state revenue has jumped 103 percent year on year as of July this year, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif has informed.

"As of July this year, the contribution of energy and mineral sector to the state income has reached Rp141 trillion or increased by more than 103 percent compared to the same period of 2020. While investment in the sector has reached more than US$12 billion," he said at a virtual ceremony held to commemorate the 76th Mining and Energy Day on Tuesday.

Indonesia's energy and mineral sector has continued to record positive growth amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the minister noted.

In the oil and gas sub-sector, the government has provided several incentives to attract investment and has made the production sharing contract scheme more flexible, he said.

"We made the oil and gas production sharing contract more flexible with gross-split or cost recovery scheme. To attract investment in the upstream sector, we provide various incentives, including (investment) in Mahakam Block," Tasrif said.

In August 2021, the largest oil and gas field, Rokan Block, was officially managed by state-run company PT Pertamina, he said.

Related news: Indonesia, US intensify cooperation in energy sector: Ministry

The ministry has issued a policy regarding the use of coal to maintain domestic energy supply, especially for power generation, the minister said.

The Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry is focusing policies toward ensuring equal access to electricity for all, he said.

"Currently, our electrification ratio has reached 99.4 percent. Next year, we have targeted to electrify all households 100 percent," Tasrif said.

The ministry has formulated the Grand Design of National Energy Strategy (GSEN) to map out a plan to increase the capacity of renewable energy plants by 38 GW by 2035, he informed.

Several efforts have been made to achieve this end, including the acceleration of primary energy substitution, conversion of fossil energy, and to increase the capacity of renewable energy and the use of non-electric green energy, he pointed out.

"To reach the target, the government has prioritized the development of solar energy for its lower investment cost and shorter time for implementation," he said.

The program will support the target of energy transformation toward net-zero emissions (NZE), which has become a common commitment to be reached by 2060 or earlier with international help, he added.

The money usually being used to financing infrastructure build, healthcare and education sector, the rest is for security and military (Indonesian Police Department and Ministry of Defense got at least 18 Billion US Dollar budget every year)

Both natural resources and non natural resources export are the reasons

This is 2020 export

The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Indonesian global shipments during 2020. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Indonesia.

  1. Mineral fuels including oil: US$25.6 billion (15.7% of total exports)

  7. Rubber, rubber articles: $5.6 billion (3.4%)
  8. Machinery including computers: $5.2 billion (3.2%)
  9. Footwear: $4.8 billion (2.9%)
  10. Paper, paper items: $4.2 billion (2.6%)
Indonesia’s top 10 exports totaled 61.9% of Indonesia’s total exports.

Iron and steel was the fastest grower among the top 10 export categories, up by 46.8% from 2019 to 2020. In second place for improving export sales was gems and precious metals via a 24.2% gain. Indonesia’s shipments of animal or vegetable fats, oils and waxes posted the third-fastest gain in value up by 17.5%.

Many coal companies are using the money to diversify,

Indika Energy (Coal company) for instant is investing in Patimban port and partner with CT Corp to be the operator of that port

Biggest coal companies are Bumi Resources and Prima Kaltim Coal, both are owned by Bakrie Group

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now PT Bakrie Brothers (parent company of PT Bakrie Otoparts) President Director, Anindya Bakrie, has said their conglomeration will open electric bus business. They look like have won the tender to provide 100 buses for Jakarta public transportation company, TransJakarta.

At the beginning they will cooperate with China company, BYD, but he said the true intention is to become OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) of electric bus.

This year they will build assembling factory in Lampung, Sumatra. Bakrie family as far as I know comes from Sumatra. They will build 50 million USD assembling factory and promise to increase the local content of the bus gradually.

Beside having an automotive part company already, PT Bakrie Otopart, the company also will cooperate with three state owned companies which is PT LEN Industry (electronic company), PT Pindad (Heavy Industry and land military specialist), and PT Barata (Heavy industry) to increase the local content.

PT LEN Industry will provide inverter, PT Pindad will provide electrical component, and PT Barata will provide steel components. PT Pindad has electric motor production facility and their electric motor is used in another state owned company, PT INKA (train maker) electric train.

They also will cooperate with two national companies, PT Laksana Karoseri and PT Adiputro Wirasejati which are famous as bus body producers.
