KUZGUN-KY* (Rocket propelled) and KUZGUN-SS (Gliding free fall) will be tested via launching from an USV and an UAV, respectively, within this year.

KUZGUN -TJ will be tested soon, as well, certain amount of engines, to carry out the development phase, have been supplied by the foreign company. Domestic engines will also be available for the final product.

KUZGUN -ER with an advanced IIR seeker and TJ propulsion, will be tested in 2023 and offered to Turkish Navy as Penguin replacement. KUZGUN -ER is being developed by following KUZGUN missile architecture and will be utilized with domestic components from scratch (including the engine) and offered with optional guidance / seekers **

SAGE is also collaborating with ILTEREN (Tubitak's office, who developed EH - ED POD for TurAF) for the EW version of the KUZGUN missile.

----- Personal comments and remarks ----

*My first comment upon seeing KY was that, it will be cool on USVs. Without any further doubts this admits that, Kuzgun -KY will be actively deployed on USVs. Now, USVs can safely fire these missiles without entering main gun range of a typical marine platform. Roketsan's Yalman launcher can safely carry 2, or if improved 4 of the KY variant.

** Kuzgun -TJ is a general purpose TJ powered missile to take duties in different conditions. KUZGUN -ER is an optimized variant for marine environment with sea-skimming mode, planning path, terminal engagement patterns and higher speed. This missile will also have a canister-launched version thus can be expected on USVs.

Compared to Roketsan's OMGFS, this missile can be safely referred as OMGFS-Lite. OMGFS - Marte-ER / OMGFS-L - Penguin.

These munitions can engage 2-3 targets simulatenously right?

OMGFS is a 300kg+ missile it isn't light at all.

Kuzgun-TJ, at 100kg achieves its long-range by gliding a good portion of its flight path rather than using TJ propulsion. It is designed to be released from UAVs (but it will make its way to choppers and later supersonic fighters) Kuzgun-ER won't have this option because it is a sea-skimming missile so it can't glide. It is enlarged to achieve the long-range requirements. I expect a 150kg missile with a slightly bigger warhead and 150km+ range.

Kuzgun can glide 110km+ when released at an altitude of 40k feet with Mach 0.9. It can reach 250km+ with glide+turbojet propulsion. When fired from the ground Kuzgun-TJ has a range of 180km. It can climb to 40k feet from the ground then sustain its flight and after the engine burn it can glide to its target. Kuzgun is also planned to have throttle(rather than flying at Mach 0,9, missile flies at lower speeds to conserve fuel and improve range) and engine restart capability so it is possible to leave some amount of fuel for the terminal phase of engagement.

Original Tubitak SAGE presentation.

Interesting bits of info are released indirectly.
T0 was started when MoD Hulusi Akar undisclosed the project by revealing its name and type(Ramjet A-A missile).
Gökhan will be a Mach 4+ missile rather than most of the Ramjet A-A missiles around that are Mach 3+ and therefore will be suitable to intercept ballistic missiles.

GÖKHAN Projesi tamamlandığında, benzerlerinin ötesinde bir füze olacağını söyleyebilirim.
Quote from the Manager of the Tubitak SAGE Institute Mr. Gürcan Okumuş

I can say that when the Gökhan project is completed, it will be a missile beyond its peers.

A short summary

  • Kuzgun-SS trials: 2022 by drone
  • Kuzgun-KY trials: 2022 by USV
  • Kuzgun-TJ trials: End of 2022 or beginning of 2023
  • Kuzgun-ER(Turbojet + IIR initially): 2023 (Penguin equivalent)
  • Kuzgun-EW: Stand-in jamming or decoy missions missile (in planning phase)

This is not a good comparison. It will replace Penguin but it is not a Penguin equivalent. Penguin has a solid rocket motor and the most modern Penguin version has a range of 55km+. Kuzgun-ER will have turbojet. Penguin weighs 370kg even heavier than OMGSF while Kuzgun-ER will probably weigh around 150kg(my expectation).

A direct equivalent would be Kuzgun-KY-ER with a longer-range solid rocket motor and heavier total weight. Such a missile might have a 60km+ range.

It was written this way because Mr. Okumuş presented Kuzgun-ER missile in this direction. As you said There is no doubt that Kuzgun-Er will be much superior in terms of capabilities.

I have seen some people who don’t seem to understand what Kuzgun-EW is supposed to be even though we already have a similar product in development for the UK, namely the Spear-EW.

We can expect a similar product to be developed under the Kuzgun-EW variant.

Me. Okumuş mentions a Surface-to-Air Missile based on Gökhan to intercept Ballistic Missiles.

Can we guess that this is the aforementioned Tozkoparan?

It is safe to call it as a Penguin replacement bro, because Penguin replacement in other Navies are also TJ powered missiles.

The creator of the Penguin missile, calls and markets Naval Strike Missile in place of the Penguin Mk2/3.

A true replacement to Penguin, in fact, is OMGSF in terms of lethality, but the doctrine TN employs requires a lighter missile that serves the duty of the Penguin.

Penguin will be replaced by 2 kind of missiles as every Navy does; one small, one large. Thus Mr. okumus is not wrong there.

Navy's attack helicopter will carry 2 OMGSF, while Kuzgun ER (TJ) will be carried in 4 (one per pylon) Kuzgun KY as 8 (2 per pylon). (As planned).

Mr. OKUMUŞ: "Works at GEZGİN continue very successfully, we have passed very important stages in the project. When the GEZGİN project is completed, a unique missile system with groundbreaking technologies such as GÖKHAN will emerge. We do not know where the Ukrainian process will go, but it has no effect on our project.”

2nd part of the interview with Mr. Okumus.

T0 of the Gokhan BVR Ramjet missile have been reached*. The missile when completed will have features and specifications beyond the equilavents.

In the latter blocks, anti-ballistic missile features are considered for Gokhan, this will also be complemented with ground-launched variants that can conduct BM defense capabilities.

Gokhan will be, in the initial phase, used on F-16s and when MMU TF-X becomes ready it will be the main weapon of her as well.**

Tubitak's Trisonic wind tunnel will make its first run in 2023, and be ready to serve for both commercial and defense industry projects in 2024.

*Here we can see the contract for missile was signed, and timer is counting down.

**Here we can notice when Gokhan will be deployed, MMU TF-X will not be ready for the service (acc. official timeline)

Penguin (Mk 3) is 370 kg with a 120 kg warhead so should we expect similar chractaristics from KUZGUN -ER??? there is a generel trend of using IIR seekers for antiship missiles. AND I am realy glad that we are catching up this trend with land based ATMACA, KUZGUN -ER and SOM J which are realy useful when used in the closed terrain typical of littoral waters with lots of islands where terrain interferes with radar returns

Kuzgun ER will have smaller warhead compared to the Penguin yet still sufficiently efficient, but also going to have a bigger warhead compared to the Kuzgun KY.

OMGSF will be the missile delivering the big punch in medium distances comparable to the Penguin in warhead weight. (Exceeding in efficiency)

The good thing is, Kuzgun is a flexible family and they can create a new family of ER missiles with different range / warhead ratios as they or customer please. He also noted ER will be available with alternative guidance (MMW, possibly compact radar seeker)

Meanwhile on the Airforce part it is the SOM-C and SOM-J taking the anti-surface duties.

From this perspective, OMGSF, SOM-C/-J, Atmaca, Kuzgun -ER will be Kement-enabled missiles.

Meanwhile in the rest of the world Penguin is being replaced by NSM of Konsberg. USN has also picked NSM to replace Penguin on Seahawks and some surface platforms.

NSM is an expensive weapon, it is also an overkill for most of the duties undertaken by Penguin missile in the past. SAGE is making a smart move.

Mr Okumuş: "We are beyond range targets in both BOZDOĞAN and GÖKDOĞAN, they have capabilities that stand out from their counterparts. In one of the tests, the first air to air missile at supersonic speeds was launched within the scope of this project.

The second phase of the GÖKTUĞ Project; The first productions will start again this year, including their integration with different F-16 types and UAVs.

In the continuation of the project, we started the preliminary studies for the advanced configurations of BOZDOĞAN and GÖKDOĞAN. Capability gains such as longer range, more advanced data link, and warhead with directed reactive particles are on the way."

Mr Okumuş: "Using an air-to-air missile in an UAV is a different and difficult concept. For this, our negotiations with BAYKAR continue. AESA Radar integration is very important here. I think that the studies will be completed in parallel on both missile level and AESA radar integration."

"As for AKDOĞAN, it is being worked on as an internal project of ours. We are planning AKDOĞAN as a 'Mini Aerial Air Missile', but we are also evaluating the case of returning to the 'Close Air Defense Missile for Naval Platforms'."

I think maybe AKDOĞAN or a version of BOZDOĞAN will be used for helicopter platforms.”
