The west only joined the counter offensive in the very late stage, the west was indeed the opportunists in that war. but this is not we discuss about, the point is about how in the history those who underestimated Russia paid their ultimate price for it.

Russian military are a hollow force, after the debacle in Ukraine I don't think anyone would think seriously about Russian military capabilities.
A hypothetical Russo-Japanese war would be fought not on land but in the air and sea. This is clearly an easy job for the Japanese.
Not only the Japanese training are superior, their equipment are much much better than the Russians.
This could be another repeat of the Battle of Tsushima.

LOL, I wish the Japanese themselves have their cheerleaders' confidence in their capability and initiate action to take their lost northern territories back from Russia, but I think they'll poop their pants even at thought of engaging Russia militarily.

Taiwan is also China ( republic of China) what's between PRC and ROC is a continuation of the Chinese civil war, Japan's lost lands are to a foreign power, it's a total different situaion.

lets look at the order of battle of each country. Also taking into account the current war in Ukraine which affects the Russian navy as many of their ships are now effectively stuck in the Black sea after Turkey shut down the strait.
Any Russo-Japanese war will most likely be fought in the Northern Pacific between the air and naval forces of the JSDF and the Russian navy Pacific fleet (based in Vladivostok) + VKS detachment in the far East (11th Air and Air Defence Forces Army )
NAVY
Currently the flagship of the Russian navy pacific fleet (Varyag) are stuck in the Med and so does two of its kilo class submarines. Hence the Russian navy only has its 4 old cold war era Udaloy I class DDG classified as large surface combatants available to the immediate area.
Note: Russian Pacific fleet also operate many small corvette which are not classified as large surface combatants.
The Japanese at least could field these large surface combatants:
Air Force
The Russian air force (11th Air and Air Defence Forces Army ) has only 4 available fighter squadron available to the immediate area
Closest to the Russians are the northern air wing of the JASDF comprising 4x Squadron:
If needed Japan could reinforce its air power with the central and southern air defense force comprising
its not even a competition, consider the Russian air force are taking heavy beating in Ukraine and being spectacularly incapable of gaining air superiority after a month, suffice to say that the Russians are not going to survive the hot meeting with elite JASDF pilot.

- 528th Fighter Aviation Regiment PVO (Smirnykh, Sakhalin Oblast)
- 777th Fighter Aviation Regiment PVO (Dolinsk-Sokol, Sakhalin Oblast)
