The Harpoon may be outdated against the latest ships' self-defence systems, but Russian ships are far from that and would vulnerable to them. Especially the Moskva, the black sea fleet's flagship, would be vulnerable. Sinking the Moskva would be a big loss to Russia's already tattered image, and would also put an end to Russia's landing operations in the south of Ukraine.A couple things here...
- Harpoon missiles are largely obsolete against modern ship defense symptoms, but they are still plenty capable of destroying landing craft, supply ships, etc. They'll definitely be enough to stave off any idea of an amphibious landing in Odessa. That would be a massacre for Russian naval forces attempting that landing. With a proven range of 130-140 km, Russian ships are going to have to be careful out in the Sea of Azov. Hopefully, the number delivered is substantial enough to allow the Ukrainians to take some chances with them. 400 would be fantastic, but I'm skeptical of that number until I see some kind of official announcement. Each one of the block 2 variant of that missile is about $1.4 million dollars. Even if the the British are donating the block 1 variant, you're still looking at nearly $1 million per missile. 400 would be an enormous investment by UK Government. If the real number is even 25% of that, 100 harpoons would be a fantastic start.
Also, I'll say it again, reference the armored vehicles being sent to Ukraine... It's nice to see countries stepping up, but the numbers have to increase substantially if they're going to achieve the desired outcome against the Russians. You want to send a message to Putin, announce the following, paid for by all 30+ countries that are helping the Ukrainians with aid.
- 100 Australian Bushmaster, personnel carriers.
- 120 British Mastiff, patrol vehicles.
- 120 American Oshkosh-L vehicles.
- 200 American MRAP personnel carriers.
- 500 American HMMWVS, with mixed TOW missile launchers, grenade launchers and 30mm and 50mm machine guns.
- 250 mixed Czech and Polish T-72 tanks + repairs for 100 captured, Russian T-72 tanks.
- 150 mixed BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry vehicles.
- 150 mixed artillery systems from across NATO. BM-21 Grad, MLRS. M777,155mm artillery. Krab, 155mm artillery. AS-90, 155mm artilery.
On top of all the small arms weaponry that has been sent and needs to keep being sent, the above would make a meaningful difference. The Ukrainians need to be able to make meaningful counter offensives, within their own territory, using capable, well armed military vehicles. Right now their offensives are extremely slow. They're having to move by foot, or in lightly armored vehicles, in many instances.
We also need a minimum 1000 Ukrainian volunteer soldiers and officers taken into Poland every week, and hastily trained / armed by the West's armed forces working over there. 3 intensive weeks of basic military training, before being armed, fully equiped and sent back into Ukraine as freshly minted, 1000 member strong reserve battalions. When they go back to Ukraine, they should continue training until they're called up for love combat. A new battalion, every week, for the next 6 months, will keep the Ukrainian manpower where it needs to be. It will also better familiarize them with the Western small arms, anti-armor and anti-air weapons that they're going to be fighting with moving forward.
