India on Sunday successfully test fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai, with the weapon hitting a pre-designated target in the Arabian Sea, the defence ministry said in a statement.

The 290-km range missile --- an Indo-Russian joint venture --- has land, air and naval variants.

“The missile hit the target with pin-point accuracy after performing high-level and extremely complex manoeuvres. BrahMos as prime strike weapon will ensure the warship’s invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges, thus making the destroyer another lethal platform of Indian Navy,” it said.

The missile has a top speed of Mach 2.8 --- nearly three times the speed of sound.

Some salient points:

Existing missiles can be upgraded (range extension).

Air launched version range also to be increased.

Seeker (RF) indigenisation underway and to be ready soon. Seeker (optical) to start soon.

Plans to increase current model to near Mach 5.

Brahmos II - to be hypersonic, to use DRDO scramjet

Brahmos NG underway, same range as current, smaller size/weight, can be deployed on more platforms.

Submarine launched Brahmos - if navy shows interest, ready to go

Export plans/policy - MEA/PMO matter

COVID restrictions have lifted and work has resumed. I am suddenly swamped with work, that's why I haven't been posting much recently.

Seeker (RF) indigenisation underway and to be ready soon. Seeker (optical) to start soon.

Not optical but a high resolution X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) with monopulse homing capability.

Oh and the Stand Off Anti-Tank(SANT) missile was tested today. Another one tomorrow :


The missile has 20km range with both LOBL & LOAL modes. Probably fired from an IAF Mi-35 attack helo. Here is an old photo of the SANT being fired off from the Mi-35 :

The 2 missiles are almost identical because they are members of the same family. The HELINA is IR guided 7km range. The SANT has a W-band active homing seeker.

There is another variant of the missile known as the Dhruvastra which is almost the same as HELINA but it features a Jet Vane Control :

The Dhruvastra has LOAL or LOBL modes. In addition to the top attack :


& direct attack capability :


Since Dhruvastra has more features & capabilities it is likely to enter service. HELINA was probably a TD project. Its likely both the Dhruvastra & SANT will be used to arm drones in the future.

All these updates and news were always there. Infact Vietnam has been requesting the missiles for quite sometime. We didn't sell it for one we know which country relationship.

Atleast in missile scenario I am not worried by their development. I am worried by the budgetary allocation to actually induct these missiles when ready. Our budget is stretched and even BMD hasn't been sanctioned though it's ready since last 3-4 years. They would be formidable defence when inducted in significant numbers. Any country would think twice before doing some mischief.

I was assuming they would have a dual mode seeker for the 2nd version (I think he implies ready in about 2 years).

But seems you are correct, this is basically X-band improvement for jamming resistance....and 1st version ready soon will be basic indigenous version of the current one that's mechanically steered I assume.

Go where ? None of our SSKs have VLS anyway.

I was thinking for now it can be tested with Arihant...provided Navy modifies Arihant FCS for it etc given VLS tube there is obv big enough physically and we can compare with K-15 dimensionally.

The interview itself was in context of project 75.

Until Brahmos M is released I will be a bit skeptical about all these plans.

Final user trial of 3rd generation Anti Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) NAG was carried out today on 22 Oct 2020 at 0645 hrs from Pokhran range. The missile was integrated with the actual warhead and a tank target was kept at designated range. This was launched from NAG Missile Carrier NAMICA. The missile hit the target accurately defeating the armour.

ATGM NAG has been developed by DRDO to engage highly fortified enemy tanks in day and night conditions. The missile has “Fire & Forget” “Top Attack” capabilities with passive homing guidance to defeat all MBTs equipped with composite and reactive armour.

The NAG missile carrier NAMICA is a BMP II based system with amphibious capability. With this final user trial, NAG will enter into production phase. The missile will be produced by Defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), whereas Ordinance Factory Medak will produce the NAMICA.

Other news sources report 4000km rather being the distance of the aircraft (from the airbase to interdict target):

The aircraft had taken off from an airbase in Punjab and destroyed a target ship located 4,000 km away in the Bay of Bengal after mid-air refuelling. It is the second such successful test of the missile, news agency ANI reported quoting government sources.

the last time I heard India is working on 800KM Brahmos, suddenly it becomes 4000.

India’s QRSAM Missile System Hits Target

Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile

India’s Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) System today hit a Banshee Pilotless target aircraft at medium range & medium altitude.

The missile launch took place from ITR Chandipur on 13th Nov 2020 at 1550 hrs off the Odisha Coast. The missile is propelled by a single stage solid propellant rocket motor and uses all indigenous subsystems. The Missile is canisterised for transportation and launch using a mobile launcher capable of carrying 6 canisterised missiles.

All QRSAM weapon system elements like Battery Multifunction Radar, Battery Surveillance Radar, Battery Command Post Vehicle and Mobile Launcher were deployed in the flight test. The system is capable of detecting and tracking targets on the move and engaging target with short halts. The system is designed to give air defence coverage against strike columns of Indian Army.
India’s QRSAM Missile System Hits Target

The radar tracked the Banshee target from farthest range and missile was launched when target was within kill zone and achieved the direct hit with terminal active homing by RF Seeker guidance. Various DRDO labs DRDL, RCI, LRDE, R&DE(E), IRDE, ITR have participated in the test.

The weapon system elements have been realized through Defence PSUs BEL, BDL and private industry L&T. The missile system is fully indigenous with active RF Seekers, Electro Mechanical Actuation (EMA) systems sourced from various industries. The Radar is four walled Active Phased Array Radar. All range Tracking stations, Radar, EOTs & Telemetry Stations monitored the flight parameters.

Is it really a DRDO developed missile system?

I believe Russians may disagree.

Considering that the -mos in "Brahmos" specifically refers to the river in Moscow and considering the eery similarities with other exported anti ship missile systems such as the Yakhont, would the Russians agree with such an announcement?

It started out as a JV and still is. "Brah" refers to the river Brahmaputra while "Mos" refers to river Moskva. DRDO is working on increasing the indigenous content in the missile. They might as well spin out a completely indigenous supersonic AShCM

The first JV was flouted in 2000-01. Drdo has come a long way since then. Not diminishing Russian assistance, but this air missile and ER, NG are purely Indian efforts. For the air launched missile, Russian assistance was limited to modification of Su 30 undercarriage even though actual work was done by HAL.
We still pay our licensing fee as per their inputs and content on every missile though.
