Is it really a DRDO developed missile system?

I believe Russians may disagree.

would the Russians agree with such an announcement?

It was jointly developed, so either country can say that they developed it.

The statements worded like this have been made multiple times before with no complaint from Russia.

India and Philippines to sign BrahMos cruise missile deal

India and Philippines are reportedly planning to sign BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal next year as remaining issues are expected to be resolved by next month.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the deal will be signed during a potential summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

The summit is expected to be held in February. However, the details are yet to be finalised.

The deal will make the Philippines the first nation to purchase the weapon system, which is developed jointly by India and Russia.

The two countries have been negotiating to reach the deal since last year. The agreement was expected to be finalised earlier this year. However, the Covid-19 pandemic pushed back the signing.

India and the Philippines were expected to sign a defence cooperation and procurement agreement, including the BrahMos deal, this month. The parties failed to sign the deal due to the absence of one of the authorities, causing further delay.

Sources told the Hindustan Times that a team from BrahMos Aerospace, the joint venture (JV) that manufactures the missiles, is expected to visit the Philippines next month to resolve the remaining issues of the proposed deal.

One of the sources was quoted by the publication as saying: “The BrahMos team is expected to iron out a few kinks and address some small issues so that the deal can be signed during the upcoming summit. Everything else has been worked out.”

The Philippines Army selected BrahMos following extensive trials. The weapons system will be delivered to the Philippines Army’s first Land Based Missile System Battery.

In September, India tested the extended-range variant of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The variant has a range of more than 400km.

Two back to back successful test trials of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile. First launch test on 13th Nov proved the Radar and Missile capabilities with direct hit. Today’s test demonstrated the warhead performance on proximity detection.

9th successful test so far.

How many tests before we induct the system into our armed forces and mass produce em? We've seen a lot of recent tests being successful in the recent past except for the Nirbhay but don't see any reports of em achieving operational clearance nor entering mass production stage except for the Pinaka which is currently being produced by 3-4 private Indian firms

Well the QRSAM is in user trial phase now. After that its induction. There is no specific number of tests you need to do to get something into service. The important thing is demonstrating all systems/sub-systems irrespective of how many tests it takes.

Pinaka is not the best example here. It has been in service for long. Now we have newer versions coming up. That's not the same as say SMART or the NASM-SR, both of which are completely new systems.

The Nirbhay missile is the only one that worries me. All the rest will make it sooner rather than later.

The first JV was flouted in 2000-01. Drdo has come a long way since then. Not diminishing Russian assistance, but this air missile and ER, NG are purely Indian efforts. For the air launched missile, Russian assistance was limited to modification of Su 30 undercarriage even though actual work was done by HAL.
We still pay our licensing fee as per their inputs and content on every missile though.

If the latter variants were purely the result of Indian efforts alone, they would not be variants of the original missile. Rather, they would be cleansheet bespoke designs from the start.

Payment of license fees is further indication that the Intellectual Property belongs to a Russian enterprise.

It started out as a JV and still is. "Brah" refers to the river Brahmaputra while "Mos" refers to river Moskva. DRDO is working on increasing the indigenous content in the missile. They might as well spin out a completely indigenous supersonic AShCM

As such, would it qualify as a "DRDO developed missile system"?

Indian Army test fired the 290 km ranged land attack version of supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from Andaman & Nicobar Islands today.

Today's BrahMos test was a complex mission. It had 3 way points unlike just 1 in earlier tests & the missile hit the target after making three curves (in a bid to avoid obstacles mid way). The test was a success.

Apparently there is a 1500km version under development :

India now working on 1,500-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

New Delhi: India Tuesday began a series of tests of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, even as work goes on to extend its range. ThePrint has learnt that India is working on a 1,500-km range version of the system that can be launched from land, water or air.

BrahMos, the only supersonic cruise missile in the world that flies at three times the speed of sound (2.8 Mach), currently has a range of 290 km, but efforts are also on to extend this to 400 km.

The Army carried out the first of several ‘live missile tests’ of the 290-km range BrahMos in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Navy and the Air Force — which has fitted its Sukhoi Su-30 MKI fighters fitted with the BrahMos — are also likely to carry out tests this week.

Sources in the defence and security establishment said the test of the 400-km range of BrahMos conducted in September was successful, and talks are on with the three Services to extend the range of the missiles within a scheduled time period.

A hypersonic version of the missile — which flies at over five times the speed of sound — is also being worked upon, and sources said the target is to test an 800-km range BrahMos next year.

“The team is also working on a 1,500-km range missile,” a source said, adding that initially, this will be a land-based missile.

“But once the system is proven, it will need just some modifications to fire from the air and water,” the source said.

The 1500 km version is likely to borrow tech from the Shaurya missile. The older version of the Shaurya was capable of reaching 1900 km with a 200 kg warhead with a max speed of Mach 7.5.

It is not known what the current version of the Shaurya is capable of. The Strategic Forces Command(SFC), India's nuclear command, has land(silos & truck mounted) & naval(nuclear submarines) versions of the missile deployed.

Any updates regarding the miniaturized air-launched version of the Brahmos dubbed as the Brahmos Mini or Brahmos NG!! Will it have a range of 400km like the current production models or limited to 290km?

No updates yet. It will be longer ranged I think.

India’s BrahMos anti-ship missile today launched from a warship hit its target located nearly 290km away.

“Indian Navy hones its combat readiness. BrahMos AShM launched by INS Ranvijay destroyer strikes target ship at max range with pinpoint accuracy in Bay of Bengal,” the Navy announced today.

INS Ranvijay is a Rajput-class destroyer armed with one stern mounted 8-cell Brahmos VLS launcher. The missile has a top speed of Mach 2.8, a very low-cruise altitude of 10 meters at terminal phase and impeccable accuracy.

It is quite possible with collaboration and enough man hours to run the iteration research.

You won't get up to date latest gen engine, but you will get a pretty good start to take forward.

They would also have to scout and acquire smaller companies in west in the niche or close to it I would say.

Also its not just metallurgy, huge part is also ceramics, bonding, applications, control systems etc.

But if they learn from experiences in Brahmos etc how to delegate and indigenise and provide more impetus in specific organised way...there is no reason they cannot achieve it.

But Govt must move away from being too stuck in PSU mindframe.

Is Brahmos jet engine Russian made or Indian made ?

Interesting convo especially about halfway in...

- 85% locally produced now
- not only range increase to 800 and 1500km but also speed increase from mach 2.8 to 3.5 and beyond 5 in future.
- VLS and torpedo tube launch options

The first stage solid-propellant booster is completely indigenous and is developed by High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) based outta Pune.

Ramjet is the only component which is Russian but is being manufactured in India. The booster, seeker, airframe and all other electronics/sub-systems are Indian

Even the canister launchers are developed and produced by L&T

It (ramjet) was originally Russian made, but now its made locally (BATL) I believe.

Brahmos is now about 85% locally made in India.
