Green light from Germany to Turkey for Eurofighter Typhoon!

Germany has given the green light for the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey. Thus, there is no obstacle left for Turkey to procure Typhoons.

Turkey has been aiming to procure 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets for a long time within the scope of the needs of the Turkish Air Force. The sale, approved by Eurofighter Consortium members Italy, Spain and England, was stuck in Germany’s unilateral embargo. Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler announced that Germany has also approved the sale of Typhoons to Turkey.

In the statement made by Minister Güler on TV100, he said: “We will purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. Germany has been resisting for a long time not to give them, but finally, with the positive contributions of our NATO friends Italy, England and Spain, Germany has finally responded positively.”

According to the information received; Turkey has been in technical talks with the UK for some time regarding the procurement of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. The Turkish Air Force plans to procure 20+20 of the latest generation configuration Typhoon aircraft. Thus, it is aimed to add 1 fleet of Typhoon aircraft to the Turkish Air Force inventory in the first phase and 2 fleets in the final phase.

If they allow integration of indigenous weapons and EW pods, IMHO this is a very good purchase.

I think this is a mistranslation and misinterpretation of his words and we are not any closer to the EF-2000 sale than we were a month ago with the start of preliminary technical talks. Let's wait a bit for some updates from outside. There still needs to be political approval from German government for the sale.

Hopefully, this will not turn into another Altay tank issue, although if we still trust Germany and make such purchases after everything that has happened, we deserve it.

It probably will, but then again regardless of which fighter jet we purchased we would have run into political sabotage and delaying so might as well get one of the best fighter jet there is. At this point there is urgency, and we can't be picky. Hopefully that will not be the case in the next decade.

I think with the upcoming government change in Germany, and with most likely the CDU running the show, they will be lifting most if not all restrictions on weapons exports.

While this is a pretty nice infographic, it is very outdated. For one if I remember right, targeting pod on the inner pylons instead of a Meteor never worked, EF-2000 still carries its targeting pod on the center pylon, in place of the centerline tank.

So this is how its loadout actually looks on interdiction/strike role.

It is a shame for the UK that they did not lift restrictions a year or two ago. The UK assembly line could have done with a Typhoon order to keep the assembly line going.

I think it would be a mistake to reduce the number of upgrades for F-16, and I think it's better to get those upgrades started immediately. You don't know which way the ball will roll, and in these times it's better to be overspending on Airforce than underspending.

EF is still a new jet and we'll be very new to it, I seriously doubt the old Trance 1 UK has can be used for educational purpose. I believe it's in our best interest to have a full fleet of F-16 that we can rely on until we've had EF in our hands for like 10 years and gotten enough experience with it.
