I enjoyed watching this one....that era when transition to rockets over guns started given the advantages. With further development of sensoring and guidance, we now take such things for granted on modern warships.....but back then the basic innovations and doctrines had to be explored and worked out during war time.

Intro to one of my favourite movies of all time (A real life angel narrated it..."Angel of Arnhem"):

Highly recommended movie + story to read up on, if you don't have time for it ....Armchair historian did a good summary of the whole thing:

Interesting to know the actual details past the more famous camera reel footage.

Exercise Zapad-81 (Russian: Запад-81, lit. 'West-81') was the largest military exercise ever to be carried out by the Soviet Union, according to NATO and US sources.[1] It was conducted from September 4, 1981 and lasted approximately eight days. It was a joint operation including elements from all Soviet service branches and introduced several new systems such as the RSD-10 medium-range strategic missile (known often to the West as the SS-20 Saber) and the Project 1143 aircraft carrier Kiev.[2]

Some footage I came across of Turkish military during 1979 exercise:

Very interesting foorage. It is from the traditional Turkish exercise "Winter" and I think on the footage the Chief of General Staff Kenan Evren is visible inspecting the soldiers. Just one year later General Kenan Evren will organize a military coup and seize the power in Turkey. Very interesting footage.

This is the latest edition of the "Winter" exercise Winter 2019

In Winter 2019 also the notorious Colonel Tehran Mansimov from the special forces of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic took place. Colonel Tehran Mansimov is known with the decisive role he played in the recent Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Turkish independance in the Turkish perspective.

Ottoman Empire after ww1 collapsed and the allies with its proxies were getting ready for its dismemberment it. Until former ottoman officers opposed this and fought on.

See how Ataturk defied the odds to establish a nation on the ashes of a 600 year old empire.

See how Ataturk defied the odds to establish a nation on the ashes of a 600 year old empire.

Ataturk is one of greatest men that ever lived, no doubt about that.

In fact he figures prominently in the "5 fingers" of original main interest I had in my much younger years (that later helped instilled various measured turcophile sentiment over time).

These were (in no specific order, though I believe Istanbul was likely first to come across my way):

- Istanbul
- Ataturk
- Ottoman Empire
- NATO/Cold-war/Turkish military
- Turkish cuisine and music

As you can see, Ataturk is the only individual in these 5 fingers....rest are broader entities.

Any nation would be both proud and humbled to have a valiant son like him at their most crucial testing time.

We all know what spectre Turkey was staring at when he took that serious matter by the scruff of its neck and saw it through to completion.

We all know how he then showed his great love for his nation after securing its modern and dignified existence.

We all know his robust setting of the modern republic's foundational ideology to stand the test of time.

He has inspired many well past his nation's borders, including this Hintli.

His epithet "Father" is most well deserved. 🇹🇷

@Joe Shearer Did you know that Winnie almost had his tickets checked near end of the war by German artillery? (and he enjoyed it!)

He was always an idiot who went in where he was not wanted. Asterisks indicate danger to life.

  1. Malakand Field Force*
  2. Omdurman*
  3. Boer War*
  4. (after Gallipoli) Western Front*
  5. Sidney Street*
  6. The Rhine crossings*
Each and every one. The Rhine crossings were only the last in the list. There were also rumoured assassination attempts, but none actually documented in any kind of authentic manner.
