In a reversal of roles, India has offered the United States of America a fighter jet trainer required by its navy for pilot training on aircraft carriers, marking the first major weapons sales pitch by New Delhi to Washington. The Indian offer is for the Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) for which the US Navy has launched a global search.
ET has learnt that India responded to the official Request for Information (RFI) with a Lead in Fighter Trainer (LIFT) version of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft. The aircraft on offer brings in experience gained by Indian developers from the naval version of the LCA that has successfully demonstrated operations from an aircraft carrier.
While the US is still evaluating the offer, India sent in a detailed project plan, which includes advanced avionics that enable the LIFT LCA to mimic almost all types of fighter jets, from cockpit display layout to control performances.
“We have done all the work in house,” Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) chairperson R Madhavan told ET. “The same platform can be used to mimic any other platform. All that needs to be done is put in the flying characteristics and things will change to the selected aircraft. For example, if they Rafale characteristics, to the pilot it will seem like he is flying Rafale, which will help in the advanced training process.”
The aircraft on offer is based on the LCA Mk 1A that is on order by the Indian Air Force and a demonstrator can be produced if the US Navy goes ahead with the selection process and shortlists it for the next step, which is formal request for proposals (RFP).
While India will be going against a clutch of global manufacturers with a history of developing trainers, developers feel there is an even chance for success as an aircraft of the type does not currently exists. In addition, the LCA is one of the few jets in the world that has a demonstrated capability of operating from an aircraft carrier.
As per the US Navy RFI, the LCA meets all basic parameters being asked for, which includes an operational aircraft capable of field carrier landing practice and carrier touch and go events. The naval version of the LCA has been tested extensively on both at the shore-based testing facility in Goa as well as the INS Vikramaditya.
With the LIFT version of LCA expected to meet both domestic and worldwide demands, plans are underway to produce a demonstrator aircraft along with the upcoming order for 83 LCA Mk 1 as that is being placed by the air force and is expected to be signed this financial year.
The US has been a significant exporter of military equipment to India, ranging from transport aircraft to artillery guns and attack helicopters. There has been a strong pitch by US arms manufacturers to gather a bigger slice of the India market, with offers in place for new fighter jets, unmanned combat aerial vehicles and air defence systems among others.

This is precisely what would have been aided if IN went with N-LCA to augment Mig-29K
We could have hosted USN in real life environment to see things for themselves up close...past the initial carrier operation trial.
Will be interesting to watch regardless. Its a pretty bold move...and USN is known to go unconventional in their picks from time to time.

LCA Mk-1A is over-spec'ed and under-spec'ed in certain aspects but might be overkill for USN's trainer requirement. While we're not completely aware of the "LIFT" version, a watered down version of the LCA should do the job

Who do you think will give kickbacks to IAF and MoD top brass if they go for a desi fighter. The congress made their cut over several decades and NDA might want the same...that's how they'd be able to conveniently send the next 10 generations of their off-spring to Ivy leaguesI've been waiting since 2k15 for the order,wonder what took so long for GOI to sign the deal?
On the brighter side, the above post revealed info regarding the two LSP Mk-1A versions that are under trails. I wonder if that's a completely built up Mk-1A which should also include structural modifications or they just swapped the AESA, EW and Avionics on to a Mk-1 frame

Govt clears IAF purchase of 83 Tejas Mark-1A fighter aircraft

The Cabinet Committee on Security has given the clearance for the Rs 39000 crore deal for procurement of 83 Tejas Mark-1A aircraft from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
The deal includes 73 Tejas fighter aircraft and 10 trainer aircraft
The IAF will sign a contract with the Bengaluru-based HAL to acquire the newer variant of the Tejas.
The HAL is expected to deliver 16 fighter jets every year. At this rate, it would be able to deliver the full complement of 83 aircraft by 2028.
The Mark 1A comes equipped with active electronic scanned array (AESA) radar, air to air refuelling, long-range BVR missiles and advanced electronic warfare to jam enemy radars and missiles along with multi-tasking capability.
The AESA radar gives Tejas improved range with near-simultaneous missile-firing options on multiple targets and increased situational awareness with mode interleaving.
Desi air-to-air missile Astra Mk1 will be integrated on Tejas Mk1A, giving an edge to the fighter over its contemporaries in BVR warfare.
Finally the deal is cleared!!!!

This is hugeeee...HAL should now up it's game to increase production rate. Interestingly, 10 of them will be Mk-1 trainers while 73 are Mk-1As'

In this episode we’ll discuss the latest move by the government to procure 83 Tejas fighter aircrafts. In what is also seen as a boost to self reliance. These aircrafts are designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency under the Department of Defence Research and Development and will be manufactured by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or the HAL. It will further be an improvement over the Mk-1 version. The Cabinet met under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on 13 January and approved the procurement of 73 LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircrafts and 10 LCA Tejas Mk-1 Trainer aircrafts at the cost of Rs. 45,696 Crore along with Design and Development of Infrastructure sanctions worth Rs.1,202 Crore.
