India’s indigenous 5th gen fighter programme, AMCA is likely to get approved by the MoD in Q2 21, with design, development and first prototypes set to cost around 15,000 cr. The first 2 squadrons will consist of Mk1 versions of AMCA. The remaining 4 will be raised with a more adv Mk-2 version with a raft of 6th-generation technologies.

15,000 crore INR ~ 2 billion USD

It looks like 6 squadrons is first commitment with later squadrons being a stepping stone for 6th gen.

Then I guess they will evaluate progress of 6th gen by then (2030s decade) to either iterate AMCA into full 6th gen or create another project for that then.

Hence why only 120 AMCA committed to now, though cost/unit is also part of it I would imagine....hence offering window for 4.5 gen like MWF downroad too to make up more bulk.
Approved on order or on program to continue until development phase is completed ?

But that is until 1 prototype, I wonder total cost with 6 prototypes ?

Bro, this is basically costing of what has been done so far and to release funds for completion of project up to and incl. prototype stage (as projected now).

It is connected to what Zapper mention earlier in thread:

Rs. 400cr ($500mn) has been sanctioned for the design phase of AMCA back in 2018. The final design of the exterior airframe has been frozen after going through several iterations with the IAF. Hyderabad based VEM technologies is building a full size model of AMCA's finalized design. As mentioned in the videos above, ADA is developing detailed designs

Currently, ADA is seeking Rs.8000-9000cr ($1-1.5bn approx) to develop 2 technology demonstrators and 7 prototypes.

i.e 500 mn (used already and ongoing funding etc) + ~1.5 billion new commitment funding to take it to next phase (i.e end of which is prototype stage)....i.e about 2 billion in total projected development cost.

We will get more details hopefully in middle of year when the MoD official release is given as to what the 1.5 billion dev phase (part 2, part 3 etc) will exactly project to cover.

I for one think these costs will likely escalate a bit more downroad (like with most projects worldwide of this nature), these are just projections now to keep everything appropriately financed and commited etc for say 3+ more years....if ADA and other design+RnD agencies that are collaborating (under ADA aegis) need more funds later....they will approach govt and requisition then.

We will know the final cost much later...and then how its spread/included/amortised on the 120 units (which will of course be a different larger bill then and involve HAL etc.. i.e production).

But wouldn't private giants like L&T and TASL along with HAL would produce the AMCA?

yah those guys will be the "etc.". That is far downstream, only HAL is confirmed for now...and I do not see anyone else being lead integrator.

I believe HAL would still act as the final integrator, particularly for AMCA which involves sensitive 5th gen tech while most sub-assemblies/modules will be outsourced to private firms. LCA's assembly line will be likely converted to MWF down the lane but TEDBF has a higher chance to be completely assembled by firms like Tata or L&T

$500mn has been allocated to the design phase few years ago. Now that the design has finally been frozen for AMCA Mk-1, ADA/HAL are seeking around $1.5bn more for the development of 6-7 prototypes

The air wing of the Indian Navy's latest carrier, INS Vikrant, could include a new indigenous fighter plane. The TEDBF (Twin Engine deck Based Fighter) is the natural successor to India's Light Combat aircraft (LCA), the Tejas. If it is flown it will be inherently better suited to the Indian Navy's needs. But in the short term it faces competition from off-the-shelf Western types, notably the Super Hornet and the Rafale.


Due to its twin-engine configuration the aircraft is larger than the Naval Tejas, yet slightly smaller than the Fulcrum. Its physical dimensions, with a wingspan of 11.2 meters and length of 16.2 meters, are compact. And the width is reduced further to 7.6m with the wings folded. The maximum take-off weight is likely to be similar to the Fulcrum however.

That is unlikely and this is more like a wishlist from some defence enthusiast. The only fighter jet IN could likely get is TEDBF. Not even the SH since IN is well aware of the strings attached in inducting an American jet as their frontline fighter. We're scheduled to get the S-400 later this year and our men have travelled to Russia for S-400 training...there is a high chance we'd end up in the same boat as yours regarding CAATSA
