Combined death toll in Turkiye and Syria has surpassed 20,000. Deadliest natural disaster since the Haiti earthquake in 2010. From looking at all the reports there are still thousands of buildings which haven't even been searched. The true death toll could be many times higher, don't be surprised if it reaches 100,000.

Well soon the blame games will start, people will ask who are the responsible. Constructors will be blamed, state will be blamed, government will be blamed etc. etc.

But we have to realize that these things are accumulations of hundreds of years. Where in Turkiye do we have city planning?

These kind of destructions are "invited" fates.

A couple of years ago we had in the blacksea region a city that was wiped away by floodwater, but hey what do you expect when you build a city in a river bedding. Even if that river has dried out and contains no water anymore it does not take to be an Einstein that with extreme rains and snow melting the water will come back (and it did!)

We have to see the truth, building houses on fault lines, land slides and riverbeds will soon or later take her toll. It's like building your house next to an active volcano and say hey the last 200 years there was no eruption. It's risky and foolish, but it is also the reality in our Turkiye. Whole of Turkiye is build without proper planning.

No tall buildings in these areas, proper buildings, safe zones and areas, weakening the fundaments of a house should be punished and neighbors should get money for reporting like 20k lira that would prevent such fools

Maybe robust areas that can be used to take shelter on such situations or war would be good to have.. We will definitifly get an earth quake in İstanbul area and we build like crazy there..

People thought İstanbul earthquake was such bad and won't just happen again in the near future but nobody can say that for sure..

Whilst this is true, when the governments policies made the disaster more deadly than it should've been it's hard not to get angry. Not only were there problems with the safety of buiidings; Turkish Armed Forces role in the efforts have been restricted along with countless examples of corruption impeding rescue efforts.

I don't even like the opposition. But this government is just criminal at this point and we've all gotten used to it.

Imagine people are getting close to rescuing survivors. And the government controlled media comes and tells you to leave so they can record a government affiliated rescue group pulling them out. That's the level of corruption we're talking about here.

The Turkish Armed Forces is the only institution in Türkiye I trust at this point.

I believe the blue flashes are the result of rocks containing quartz colliding with other rocks. Colors are different depending on the material. The stress causes the chemical bonds in the rocks to break which makes the oxygen ionize, which then goes up and causes lights.

We need to do some self criticizing too.

AKP may not be responsible for the bad quality of all buildings, but what is the excuse for buildings younger than 10 years? Where are the regulations, inspections?

There is a grave amount of neglect, this should be tackled firstly.



All of us bare responsibility too, if not for ourselves we should take responsibility for our families, neighbors etc.
At soonest we should organize and let our own building re-examine for construction quality everywhere in Turkiye, start by ourselves!

No, he wasted the first two days with his ego and incompetency of people he has personally appointed too coordinate rescues, moreoever, they have even limited volunteers to conduct rescues independently.

They've been reported for over a thousand years. Though cables might cause some of the flashes, I highly doubt the multicoloured instances of earthquake lights are caused by cables being disturbed.

The sheer power at which two materials rub in a high magnitude earthquake would easily generate voltage of some amount.
