Do we know where this money is now?
In 2011, the Minister of Finance, Mehmet Şimşek answered this question with: "we built roads with it" (Vergiler yol oldu.)

In 2020, the Minister of Treasury and Finance has answered the same question with: "It could be spent on any expense." (Herhangi bir yere harcanmış olabilir)

Talk about foresight.

Edit: BTW, has any journalist asked this question to any government official after the recent earthquake?

Earthquake isolators of Malatya hospital in action. As you can see, they absorb most of the shaking and prevent it from being transferred to the superstructure. This construction system should become compulsory not only in public buildings or viaducts, but also in residential buildings.

Not a direct answer to your question but it's related.

"In 22 years, 38 billion 227 million dollars of earthquake tax was collected in Turkey.

With this tax, 1.3 million houses with an area of 96 square meters could be built.
(Euronews)"
TOKİ, which produced 1 million 170 thousand houses in 19 years, will produce 500 thousand houses in 5 years with what resource? (Thursday 22 September 2022 )

Although we have been talking about meeting the housing need for a week, its history goes back to about 40 years ago.

The first structuring of the Mass Housing Administration (TOKİ), which is affiliated to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change today, was the Mass Housing Fund established by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey with the Mass Housing Law enacted in 1984.

A portion of the fund's revenues were allocated as housing loans, while a portion was allocated to areas such as small industry, tourism and infrastructure services, and the rest was transferred to the general budget.

Mass Housing Fund, which had a 25 percent share in housing production between 1984-1992, was included in the general budget in 1993.

The Housing and Public Partnership Administration was restructured in 2003, apart from the General Administration, which completed 43 thousand 145 houses between 1985 and 2002 and has a Housing Fund of approximately 950 thousand houses.

After the Emergency Action Plan announced in 2003, it was decided that the state should operate more effectively in housing mobilization. The name of the Presidency was changed to Mass Housing Administration (TOKİ).

According to the information on the website of TOKİ, which has produced 1 million 170 thousand residences in the 19 years since 2003, its target for 2023 is to reach 1 million 200 thousand residences.

The news is very long, but the part I shared shows enough that those taxes are not wasted.

The point of creating this fund was to have the money when you need it(after an earthquake) and where you need it.

"The cost of aid provided by Turkish defense industry companies to earthquake zones has exceeded 2 billion ₺.
BAYKAR alone provided aid worth 1.8 billion TL."

BAYKAR has shown its quality.
*the money that they have not earned off the public. One could say TAF's UAVs were bought with taxes and thus Baykar made profits but no, they keep profits minimal to negligible for domestic orders. Most of this money is made via exports.

I would like to see companies who make money off the public, to donate more. Especially the contractors could be great help by rebuilding cities at no profits.

The man was shouting 'we dont have electricity for 6 days in a row, let me tell our problems here'.

I knew the mainstream media was rotten everywhere but in Turkey it is God of War-mode rotten.

The channel would get draconian punishments for letting him speak, foreign channels are better protected in this situation, this situation makes domestic media not trustworthy so people tend to watch foreign channels which gives oppotunitiy for pushing agenda of the source countries.
But cant expect such a deep insight into the matter from this governemnt.

Coca Cola donated $1million afaik. Companies from all over the world are donating money or goods for Türkiye & Syria.

Korean conglomerates Samsung, Hyundai, LG, SK, Doosan, Lotte and their local Turkish affiliates provide millions-worth of relief funds and equipment like excavators, construction vehicles, diagnosis devices, warm clothing.

McDonalds is giving free meal in the region.
Even my company had an internal E-Mail circulating for collecting donations.

This picture is from Malatya, Gelincik.

These apartment buildings, too, are constructed by TOKİ. They were specifically advertised as 'earthquake resistant'.

Sadly, they were widely unpopular among the people. Now, after the earthquake hit the city, crowds are camping on the premises and the residents are relieved, happy and confident.

Needles to say, the buildings haven't suffered any damage whatsoever, not even cracks.

"Duble roads"
Yap işlet devret? what happened to build operate transfer public private partnerships. So the Gang of Five scooped the funds... Corruption and depravity in Turkiye hit a peak recently! I can't tolerate to see how shameless are these guys, even after a disaster like this they are still selfish and ruthless.

Cüney Polat from GDH says that as a private company, this company made the most significant cash contribution in the first week. I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is true, I must say this: While the country has so many huge companies from consumer durables to textiles, from automotive to food, which are the pride of the country's industry and make huge exports, and while there is a huge service sector, tourism and builders with tens of billions of dollars of construction contracting work in 80 countries of the world, the fact that defense industry companies are now at the forefront on a sectoral basis, (from foundation companies to private companies), actually tells us so much that we can write pages and pages about it.

There is no need to write the names of the companies one by one here, if the defense industry companies can exceed 2 billion TL in the first week, we should reach more than 10 times that amount in total across all sectors. If not, we should take care of these 1500 companies clustered around 20 or so large companies, as our eyes.
