Turkiye is a country of over 80 million people and doesn't have an anti-ballistic capable SAM system. We need a stop gap solution urgently until missile defence capable Siper is ready.
If Turkiye can secure its territory not depending on NATO systems it will be both good for Turkiye and also for NATO as there will be no need to stretch NATO's anti-balllistic missile defence systems. The turbulent times in which we live and the geographical placement of Turkiye on the map are a very serious factors for Turkey to consider a stop gap ABM capable air defence system and Aster 30 Block 1NT is the perfect candidate.
Plus, if we can get back in to the joint development and production program like we were supposed to, just think of all the know how we will have access to. In addition we will learn how to counteract this missile. (As the new ships Greece is buying will have this missile on board)
When we first signed the declaration of intent with France and Italy in 2017 and later the contract to study possible joint development in 2018, we were nowhere as far advanced in air defence area as we are now. Then, it was our cheap labour cost and may be a limited potential technical input that seemed attractive. Today we are in a much better position, almost on par with the western counterparts in terms of technical advancements. Or at least on the way of getting there shortly. So it is of great benefit to the Samp-t consortium to include Turkey in to the fold. It, infact, it is a win win situation for both parties.
