This is great News! Poor man’s Excalibur! Probably just as good and effective. Due to braking system I wonder if overall range suffers?
Excalibur actually increases effective range.
This is going to be a big plus for our artillery’s effectiveness. Also cheaper in the long run as no unnecessary rounds will be fired, extending barrel life and not wasting ammunition. Much more accurate targeting and less collateral damage. High probability of first time hit. No GPS but electromagnetic communication with the ammo. Various fuse possibilities like delayed action, timed or with proximity sensor.
My only gripe will be the name!
Why ATOM? Already Aselsan has Atom 35mm rounds. Isn’t this going to be confusing?

Wouldn't put it in the same category as Excalibur. Excalibur is an all up new round, while ATOM 105/155mm is an course correction fuse which can be fitted onto existing 105/155mm shells. Very different.

We will likely see an Exclibur type round developed by Tubitak/MKE with range extensions.

As for the naming, ATOM is naming being used on all smart fuzed developments.

Yes, there are many course corrected fuzes SPACIDO has one that is very similar to how ATOM 105/155mm works.

Yes, there are many course corrected fuzes SPACIDO has one that is very similar to how ATOM 105/155mm works.
Excalibur is expensive too. For ground artillery cheaper solutions are better. If we are going to go for an all new system, one like a “vulcano“ round that BAE Systems and Leonardo developed would fit the bill. With 76/127/155 mm versions we can make all our artillery rounds pinpoint accurate. They could be used against air threats as well!

Firtina-II Self-Propelled Howitzer
  • Prime contractor BMC Defence.
  • 140 pieces will be produced.
  • The first 3 of them were delivered in January 2021.
  • 3 more will be delivered in the first half of 2021.
  • The remaining ones will be delivered between 2022-2027.
Times is changing so fast, we want hybrids now.
What's all that growling about, to scare the enemies?

Then there is a gap for deliveries Until 2022!!
This could be the gap to develop the Hybrid drive train before applying it to the artillery unit.
Or it could simply be the time needed for UTKU engine to be accepted and integrated to Firtina 2.

Electrification of lesser vehicles is going pretty fast; yes we want a fire breathing monster of a tank for Altay but electrification should hit Altay too at some point. In which case a smaller engine can be just fine. Anyway we need the realization of a 1500 to show the world that we can.

Especially if they will be able to use Aselsan’s Atom (mesafece duzeltme sistemi) air brake kit for more accurate targeting.

35mm ATOM air defense (optimized for air breathing targets)
35mm ATOM C-RAM (optimized for small caliber rockets, mortars, and artillery shells.)
35mm ATOM ZMA (IFV. Optimized for ground targets)
105mm ATOM (shell fuse for existing 105mm artillery shells. It is made mainly for Boran lightweight air-transportable howitzer)
155mm ATOM (shell fuse for existing 155mm artillery, it can be utilized by all existing 155mm SPH platforms)
120mm ATOM ( 120mm mortar shell fuse as part of mortar modernization effort)
81mm ATOM (81mm mortar shell fuse as part of mortar modernization effort)

All of them are produced in the same fuse production line. They are cheap, they can be produced in tens of thousands of units. They can be applied to existing shells that are currently in the stockpile and can be used with minimal modifications on platforms that can fire mentioned ammos.
