A historic day for the Indian Navy today as IND Mormugao was commissioned in Mumbai in the presence Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, CDS Gen Anil Chauhan, Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and other dignitaries on Sunday. INS Mormugao is a P15B indigenously made stealth-guided missile destroyer ship. The warship is packed with a plethora of sophisticated sensors, modern radar and weapons systems such as surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles, according to the Indian Navy.

India has been focusing on bolstering its maritime capability with a focus on the Indian Ocean in the backdrop of concerns over China's growing forays into the region, considered the backyard of the Indian Navy.

With a clear focus on indigenisation and self-reliance, 42 out of the 44 ships and submarines under construction are being built in the Indian shipyards, the Navy said.

China is vying for influence in the strategic Indian Ocean region with substantial investments in ports and infrastructure investments in several countries, including Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Here are 5 things to know about INS Mormugao:​

• Named after the historic Goan port city Mormugao, the ship undertook her first sea sortie on 19 December last year when Goa celebrated 60 years of liberation from Portuguese rule.
• INS Mormugao is the second of the four 'Visakhapatnam' class destroyers, indigenously designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd.
• The majestic ship measuring 163 metres in length and 17 metres in breadth with a displacement of 7,400 tonnes can be regarded as one of the most potent warships to have been constructed in India. 70% of the components used in the construction of INS Mormugao are indigenous.
• The ship is propelled by four powerful gas turbines and it is capable of achieving speeds over 30 knots.
• The Navy said the ship is equipped to fight under nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) warfare conditions and that it is fitted with a modern surveillance radar that provides target data to the gunnery weapon systems.

Ikr, these numbers are just not enough...IN has been self-reliant since the past two decades for the most part but we need to up our game, particularly on the submarine front if we want to prevent and actively counter PLAN encroachments in IOR

Yes broadly the biggest influences regarding shipyard investments etc were (post independence):

50s- 60s British (inertia from British Raj era)

60s - 90s Soviet and Russian (especially close cooperation promoted by folks like Admiral Sergey Gorshkov, especially after Indo-USSR strategic cooperation agreement of the late 60s.).

Only in last couple decades has there been switch to more western shipbuilding influences (as cold war ended, relations improved with western world and more options opened there along with cooperation with Israel too).

But the weight of Soviet involvement and influence in Indian military shipbuilding has its inertia in various ways given the duration it occupied.

I know India built some Leander class frigates and follow on classes based on the Leander class. Are the current frigates influenced from that line?

No, the Leander influence ended with the Brahmaputra-class.

Shivalik onwards are an all-new design. Fincantieri was a consultant for design validation.

ASW Corvette is 16. 8 from GRW and 8 from CSL. One more Kalvari has been delivered today.
Nuke subs numbers are not officially given out.

16 is the total planned. I was just listing what is actively being built in shipyards or being fit out and sea-trialled etc.

i.e all those from keel laid to ready for commision.

At least 4 - 5 of the corvettes have not been started construction wise in any fashion.

7 was the earlier number and now a bit out of date (i.e 2 - 3 have since had keel laid recently I suppose)....so thats where the 9 (being constructed and of them INS Arnala has been launched just now) comes from.

Yes it is currently undergoing refit at HSL (Vizag) and has been since late 2021 I believe.
