Yeah good luck with TB-2 shooting a balloon at 60k feet altitude with an air to ground missile...
wasn't Baykar discussing giving the TB-2 air-to-air capabilities to shoot down Russian drones?

my point is that it is extremely stupid to develop a 4 gen fighter aircraft in order to do stupid things like shooting down balloons, especially when there are cheaper alternatives that can do the job.

even after the TB2 is removed from the equation, there is Akıncı, Kızılelma, and Hurjet light attack Turkey doesn't need a 4th gen fighter that will suck up millions of dollars in development and even more in upkeep so that the fighter is ready just in case there is ever a balloon to shoot down.

Well the exsample of a balloon was only half serious, you gotta factor in the maintainance cost of a fighter like TFX, its way higher per flight hour than that of a F-16 class jet.
Drones such as TB-2 are limited in speed, payload capacity and altitute so we will still need fighters in forseeable future.

There is a reason why the US was operating F-18, F-15 and F-16 simultaniously for so many decades, the reason is there is no single perfect fighter for every role.

Malaysia bought 18 FA-50s for 50mil each while Philippines paid 35mil each for 12. These trainer converted fighters by their nature are cheap, and they sell rather well.

Poland would also be a natural customer for F-16Vs but didn't see the need or found the costs too high, they opted for FA-50s instead. Add to that, PZL makes parts for F-16s, they'd get a nice offset deal on top. Maybe you don't need F-16Vs when you already have the best US has for sale.

No, LM is always in favor of selling the F-16 to the Poles and the US government doesn't have a problem with that. The only peoblem here was the long backlog which meant no deliveries of new F-16Vs at least until late 2020s if you order them now.

They are also planning to upgrade their pre-existing F-16s to block 70/72 specification.

I think our hi-lo mix in manned jets is going to be hi-legacy for a while. We modernize many F-16s and they should be able to work until the 2040s for the ROI of that investment to make sense. 20 years from now we can much more easily design a new low-type plane.

Great idea to have in mind, but I think today’s operational cost-benefit analysis would render such concept practically useless.

It seems MMU is named TF-23 İstikbal (translates as future). It is a reference to the famous words of Atatürk. İstikbal göklerdedir (The future is in the skies).

Whats interesting too Ataturk actually had a natural fear of planes.

When serving as an Ottoman officer in France. Planes were showcased as the next big thing in warfare.

He witnessed a plane crash that pretty much scarred him.

Lets not forget this was before world war 1 and planes at the time were still in their infancy with lots of crashes and high rates mortality in wars and in testing.

Still despite this he saw planes as the future.
