USA: Turkey is a guarantor force in Palestine!
AN UNPLEASANT surprise awaited Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, when he received the American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at his house in Chania. Coming from Turkey, the American official had already formed an important role for the neighboring country, while in Greece he simply reserved participation in the naval operation to protect navigation in Eritrea. And in fact without any substantial exchange, apart from some compliments. Instead, it expects Turkey to exploit its ties and influence, both for preventing the expansion of the war and for shaping the "tomorrow day" that the Americans envision with the Palestinians having their own state entity. However, all this was discussed with the Turkish President. Not with the Greek Prime Minister... However, the day after Anthony Blinken's visit to Athens, "government sources" and pro-government publications focus on whether we will get new F-35 fighters! This was also the issue that brought the American Minister of Foreign Affairs to the region. So we are understandably worried that something has gone wrong in this meeting and an attempt is being made to distract the attention of the citizens from the main issue.
In fact, when the government's "story" about fighter jets is not supported by statements from Anthony Blinken himself, our concerns increase. Unfortunately, the American minister came to Crete to declare on Greek soil how important Turkey is for developments in the Middle East. In fact, in the official American text, Turkey is referred to with the Turkish pronunciation of its name, as President Erdogan wants to impose Türkiye. No Turkey. But Greece is just Greece. So since Anthony Blinken excludes the fact that Mr. Erdogan and Mitsotakis brought Greece and Turkey closer together (Türkiye always so as not to displease the President of the neighbor), it highlights it as a guarantor force for the Middle East. He states specifically: "In Turkey (Türkiye) we focused, in fact giving great scope to what Turkey (Türkiye) can do using its influence, using its ties, in order to help not to expand the conflict in the Middle East. And we also discussed the role that Turkey (Türkiye) can play both in the next day for Gaza and in dealing with the demanding questions of governability under Palestinian control, security and reconstruction as well as cooperation with others in the framework of the effort to create conditions of durable and lasting peace and security in the region". He had nothing to say about Greece. He preferred to thank Mr. Mitsotakis because he "welcomed him into his home"!
And after the usual platitudes about Greek-American friendship and cooperation followed, he told us that one way to declare the continuation of this joint action is the participation of the Greek frigate in operations for the safety of navigation in Eritrea. For Turkey, therefore, a role of guarantor power with influences and ties that it can utilize, and for Greece a role of simple participation in an operation to keep the navigation channels open. Something that as a maritime country we had to do one way or another, but where we would expect it to be appreciated. And to bring diplomatic and other exchanges. Not mere compliments. Just as it had happened in 1990, when the late Konstantinos Mitsotakis, by sending a frigate to Eritrea, secured, among others, the granting of seven warships for the renewal of our Fleet and a large number of fighter and transport aircraft. Now, nothing.
No wonder that afterwards there were no questions from journalists about Greece, but only about Turkey and whether it showed that it intends to undertake obligations as of the next day in Gaza and the prevention of the expansion of the conflicts. In this regard, Mr. Blinken said: "From our discussions today, it appears that Turkey (Türkiye) is ready to play a positive and productive role in the work that must be undertaken the day after the end of the conflict, but also more broadly in the effort to find a way to ensure durable peace and security. We talked about it. I cannot give more details than that they are clearly willing to play a productive role. I think they are also ready to use the connections and influence they have, as well as their relationships with some of the most important players and some important states in the region, and do everything possible to de-escalate and prevent the conflict from expanding . Turkey can play a vital role in achieving this. A large part of our conversations was dedicated to this. They (the Turks) also share our interest in achieving this and I am sure that they will make every possible effort."
In particular, questions are raised by Anthony Blinken's overall position on the situation where he essentially equates Israel with Hamas, which he continues to include in the list of terrorist organizations. Is it a coincidence that this - verbal turn - occurs after Blinken's visit to Turkey and his discussions with Erdogan? In this regard, he states: "There are different perspectives, different needs, different requirements. But it is vital that we engage in this diplomacy now both for the sake of the future of Gaza itself, and more broadly for the sake of the future of Israelis and Palestinians and for the region as a whole. There is clearly a strong desire among the majority of people in the region for a future of peace, security, de-escalation of conflicts, integration of countries, and this is one way. This is a future".
His reference to "integration of the countries" is clear support for the intention of the Palestinians for secession and the creation of states with complete self-sufficiency. Although it is certain that in such a case Hamas will continue to dominate.
