NEW DELHI: In the biggest push yet to ‘Make in India’ in the defence sector, the government has cleared a ₹48,000-crore deal to buy 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It’s billed as a game changer for the domestic aerospace industry, including small enterprises. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale gives a lowdown on more indigenous Defence projects in the offing and how India’s quest for self-reliance in this crucial sector is poised.

Israel is pushing hard for the Athos...I hope GoI distributes the ATAGS order between Tata, Kalyani and L&T while completely scrapping Athos

I don't think we need the guns from Israel, we can do a collaboration with Elbit for specialized ammunition ...... who know they are already developing some air bust ammunition to counter swarm drones...

The major difference between Mk-1/Mk-1A and MWF are the airframe size and engine. MWF will have a lot of commonality with Mk-1A with most of the newly developed indigenous sub-systems like EW suite, avionics, Radar etc being tested on LSP variants of the current versions. There isn't really a lot to develop newly in here except for testing the airframe since MWF will also be having canards

Metal cutting for MWF's prototypes is scheduled this year and if they happen to stick to the schedule, it's very likely that first prototype will fly in 2023

I don't see why we need Meteors on the Tejas. The meteor has a range of 120km (NEZ 60km best in class) while Astra Mk-1 with 110km and Astra Mk-2 with 160km. Mk-1 has already been inducted by IAF while Mk-2 is in trails. We can expect longer and faster versions of Astra in the near future.

Post Balakot, IAF infact approached MBDA for Meteor integration on other platforms but they said it could only be done if the radar is of European origin. Even if MBDA fixes it somehow, that would mean escalated costs (Meteor costs 4 times that of Astra) along with spending of valuable forex when we could induct an almost comparable indigenous missile for lesser cost paving the for future versions

Secondly, China claims their PL-15 has a range in excess of 300km and the JF-17 Blk-III is reportedly getting it.

#InspiringADA is a new series that would get you all exciting updates on the programmes being run by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA). This is an effort to capture some inspiring developments ahead of #PlaneCarnival 2021.

In this take-off piece, we have Dr Girish Deodhare, Programme Director ADA, giving a heads-up on LCA Mk-II. In subsequent segments in the next 3 days (Part-1B, Part-1C & Part-1D), you will hear from him some updates on TEDBF, AMCA, NLCA in addition to his take on technology and youngsters.

.

Great unit price.

Now in parallel, we should be focussing on a strong weapons package and already as discussed elsewhere, looks like we haven't given up on the GTRX Kaveri.

What percentage of work will be completed in India when measured by value added?

This image seems to indicate India's role will be limited to the manufacturing and assembly of the airframe.

What other components, if any, are planned to be designed, manufactured, assembled and tested in India?

How much progress has the Indian aerospace industry made in matters of aeroengines, avionics, ammunition, on board oxygen generating system, pilot ejection seats, landing gear, navigation and control systems and other components that go into the fighter jet ?

Engine is the main problem for now, indigenous uttam aesa radar would soon be integrated,EW suit of india and isreal collaboration could not be added due to space, regarding astra bvr it would be integrated soon.

Very often, commercial off the shelf (COTS) avionics are cobbled together and labeled 'indigenous' by numerous countries.

How is it possible that India, without any commercial wafer fab, would be able to produce microprocessors, memory, MEMS and other IC that go into a computer or avionics of any sort in a fighter aircaft?

How is it possible that India, without any commercial display fab, would be able to produce displays for its fighter aircraft? I note that the display is said to be of French origin, but I hope you get the drift.

That more often that not, commercial off the shelf (COTS) parts are cobbled together and passed off as indigenous by various countries. As we have seen in the case of the very transparent KF-X programme, almost all the significant technologies are either entirely developed outside Korea, or with considerable foreign assistance.

OBOGS, or the On Board Oxygen Generating System, too, was foreign sourced in the KF-X.

Contrary to a popular misconception, it is certainly not "only" the engines that countries lag behind.

Rather, since East Asians are stereotyped as weaker in mechanical engineering (including aerospace engineering) in comparison to Europeans (or descendants), aeroengine technology is withheld and prevented from sharing by Europeans (or descendants) from the rest of the world.

The same trick would not quite work with electronic components because microprocessors, memory, MEMS, other IC or multifunctional displays can be quite easily sourced from East Asian countries.

I would like to attach a simplistic depiction of foreign origin components in the Chinese commercial airliner COMAC C919.

The foreign contribution is certainly, by no means, limited to simply the "engines".

Is there any reason to believe the Indian, or Turkish or Korean or Indonesian (for that matter), aerospace industry is more advanced and more comprehensive than the Chinese aerospace industry?

My initial estimate is that the Chinese aerospace industry is considerably more advanced than any of those countries' aerospace industries.

Well by your logic how would ISRO have its own designed, manufactured microprocessors onboard in its PSLV rocket?
