Date: February 22, 2021 The

pavilion of Halcon, one of the companies listed under the UAE Defense Technology Group , attracted attention through the company’s pavilion, which presented a group of jet engines, during the first day of the IDEX exhibition. A woman from the United Arab Emirates, among the group that designed and implemented the jet engines project, she is the mechanical engineer Aisha Salem Al-Numani, one of the workers of Halcon Company and a graduate of the United Arab Emirates University.
Aisha Salem explained that the project consists of jet engines used in launching missiles and planes, and she is one of a team of three engineers, noting that she is one of the implementers of the project, which was completely completed in the Emirates.
She stated that the work team has implemented and designed three types of jet engines, which are designed for missiles and weapons, which need these types of engines, and unmanned aircraft.

She indicated that the idea of the project came with the aim of supplying the UAE defense system, and providing it with powerful engines, and that these engines are the first of their kind in the Middle East, and that the work team aspires to make the UAE the first Arab country to manufacture such advanced engines.

IDEX 2021: Edge unveils long-range anti-ship missile

The United Arab Emirate’s (UAE’s) Edge group unveiled the HAS-250 anti-ship missile as a ground-launched system developed by its Halcon guided weapons division at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2021 show held in Abu Dhabi from 21–25 February.

“The HAS-250 is a UAE-designed and developed surface-to-surface missile capable of travelling at speeds of up to 0.8 Mach, with a range of over 250 km,” Edge said in a press release. “During its terminal phase, it can fly towards its target at a sea-skimming altitude of below 5 m.”

It said it uses a combination of GNSS and INS mid-course guidance systems and has an active/passive radar seeker for the terminal phase. A video released by Edge said the missile uses the HS-350 turbojet engine and has an anti-jamming system. It also showed it has a solid-propellant booster that drops off after launch.

A launcher on an Iveco Astra truck with two missile canisters was displayed at the show.

“The HAS-250 is a significant advancement in our quest to equip naval forces with the highest performing cruise missile system,” Halcon CEO Saeed Al-Mansoori was quoted as saying.

He suggested the HAS-250 is being developed for the UAE Naval Forces, saying “this weapon will assist in the active defence of the UAE’s waterways”.

Has this anti ship missile being tested yet?

It could be as good as, worse than or better than the Turkish anti ship missile. Not enough information on the two anti ship missiles have been revealed except from their manufacturers.

If a third party, such as Qatar, were to purchase both the anti ship missiles, more accurate comparative evaluations on the two anti ship missiles could be provided.

Do you know what percentage of the anti ship missile was domestically developed and produced and what percentage is intended to be obtained from COTS sources?

Nope no testing, its in very early stages actually it will take time for a seeker and engine to be developed. I'm not exactly sure how much is foreign and how much is local because those details aren't public, likely anything that can be manufactured mechanically is locally made with CNC machines and a lot of electronic parts are foreign from other countries like China, India etc imo.

Likely the homing head and engine may be foreign or contracted for development from a South African company called Incomar.

"A Halcon representative told Shephard that the HAS-250 remains at an early stage of development. An approximate timeline for initial tests is yet to be finalised and nor have contractors been selected to develop the most sophisticated components of the missile, such as the engine and the homing head."

Do you have any videos of those three engines undergoing static tests?
No clue on progress, a South African expert is leading the team and I checked his linkedin and he developed engines similar to these when he worked at CSIR. He may be just copying what he made before in South Africa. I have the brouchures let me link them for you to take a look at.

The missile seeker seems a lot simpler than I thought it would be.

To early to write something about it, most likely a licence project. UAE don't have the people to design from software to hardware. Denel don't have anti ship missile, so for them would be difficult to.

Ambitious projects but will it work with that kind construction? Expats coming and making weapon for a foreign country, it will be hard to get material from electronics to fuel chemical.

I mean there is 400+ employees its not impossible for them to develop it although it will take a pretty long time to finish. An anti ship missile isn't super different than a cruise missile except that it has a radar seeker, but a regular cruise missile uses a turbojet, GNSS/INS, and an altimeter.

Experienced Expats don't go at it alone, they work with junior Emirati engineers and whatever COTS material they need they usually buy from India or China through supply managers.

You don't have facilities and infrastructures, that parts you company showed are for 99 procent above. What if they put ambargo? You think that 400 engineers will fix it>?

Problem is an embargo on the UAE is very unlikely. It is highly unlikely Turkey can produceeverything's inside the missile. Hell look at India, even they import a lot of items for their missiles.

How could 35kg weight missile intercept a thread ? aspiring abd ambitious. Israeli C-Dome and British variants weights liKe 100kg.
I think Iron dome has much further range, and this is supposed to be HTK missile with active radar seeker.

UAE hired a contractor from South Africa to be the lead designer this is what his resume says. He worked at Denel, and now at Incomar.

Systems engineering for Cheetah C-RAM missile.
Systems engineering for radar seeker on Cheetah C-RAM missile
Radar seeker microwave design engineering for Cheetah C-RAM missile

The integration of AL TARIQ’s guidance kit on a newly developed Penetration Warhead was showcased at IDEX 2021. The programme is currently in the final phases of qualification and field testing and will be ready for production towards the end of 2021.

This new development will enhance AL TARIQ’s capabilities to successfully engage hardened targets. In line with its participation at IDEX 2021, AL TARIQ provided details on the major upgrades to its family of Precision Guided Missiles (PGM).

The system integration onto a new generation Penetration Warhead is a milestone achievement for the company, making it possible to field such a purpose-built warhead on the guidance kit. This new feature enhances the capability to neutralise strategic infrastructure such as bridges, reinforced shelters, control centres and fortified installations utilising the warhead’s superb penetrating performance.

AL TARIQ also briefed stakeholders on the enhancements implemented to its family of PGMs, which have recently been updated to the Block 2 specifications. The upgrade boasts a host of latest technology improvements, including an enhanced navigation solution, a new Height-Of-Burst-Sensor (HOBS) capability for airburst applications and a weapon system that is capable of being digitally integrated on aircraft requiring either MIL-STD-1760 or DIGIBUS interfacing.

The upgrade further boosts the integration of AL TARIQ’s PGMs with a new “PowerPack” that equips the weapons with a pre-flight power source, as well as greater mission flexibility through leveraging cockpit fuze programmability. Rendering it highly effective in neutralising its target, the weapons system incorporates the latest Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Receiver technology as well as a highly sophisticated GPS anti-jamming solution.

Another possibility is that the recent bonhomie with Israeli regime is beginning to bear fruit.

Would it be far fetched to rule out Israeli assistance or transfer of technology for the UAE developed HAS-250 anti ship missile?

When we talk about such paraphernalia as guidance kits for bombs, for a wide variety of air to surface munitions or navigation pods, perhaps it is the recently declared overt friendship with the Israelis that is behind these recent developments?

More than likely its South African involement, not Israeli. I have found no Israeli staff on the company's linkedin, but many South Africans.

South Africa has a lot of untapped technology that is very useful in many areas of missiles and weapons.

I didn't know that UAE has that many defence products, they are investing heavily like Turkey but I wonder how many of them functional and how many are mock ups. Apart from 4x4 I haven't seen UAE products on the field. They are developing 8x8 but at the same time choosing Arma from Turkey, developing various UAVs but instead sending Chinese ones to Libya.

a contractor probably not a "person" but a whole team spanning from design, manufacture , assembly ,test.
a person can not lift up a project on his/her own.
Denel has been in financial troubles recently, probably Edge group has paid and acquire some of the workgroups in Denel, or critical people to carry-out each stage i mentioned above.
It is very likely seeing all those projects in most recent 1-2 years and currently in mock-up, protoype or qualification stage.

Of course not 1 person by themself, but a contractor as a lead designer who designed a similar missile called the Denel Cheetah.

Yes, you are right it hired many Denel engineers in large quantities who's Linkedins I can see online.

I wonder if that counts as IP theft though?
