Is India a net security provider?
French President Macron`s visit to India from February, 17 to 19 was marked by the signing of a number of significant agreements and the elevation of bilateral relations to the level of a special global strategic partnership. This covers a wide range of issues from defense to high technology. Among other things plans to purchase 114 fighter jets “Rafale” with the possibility of their subsequent assembly in India have confirmed. The transaction is estimated to be worth $ 30-35 billion. It`s evident European counties are attempting to occupy a more significant position in the procurement of weapons for the Indian Air Force, thereby limiting Russia`s historically established role in supplying modern aircraft. As is well known the Indian Air Force relies on Russian Su-30 MKI fighters which outperform their French competitors in a number of characteristics not to mention their lower market value compared to “Rafale”. In recent years India has steadily deepened its military cooperation with the European Union becoming the third Asian country after Japan and south Korea to sign such an agreement. However, India is the first to maintain close ties with Moscow. The urgent need to replenish combat vehicles is linked to the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May 2025, the Indian Air Force lost three “Rafale”, one MIG -29, SU-30 MKI fighter jets in an air battle. As a result, the conflict with Pakistan was a sobering experience for India, demonstrating that the India, demonstration that the Indian Air Force is not superior to the Pakistani Air Force.
Upon analyzing the consequences of this brief military confrontation, the Indian government decided to sharply increase defense spending. According to Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, defense spending will increase by 15 percent compared to last year`s budget, amounting to approximately $ 90.5 billion in the near future.
These steps are primarily motivated by India`s decision to move away from its dependence on a monopoly supplier to avoid supply disruptions and a political pressure. India`s main condition is noy to transfer technology and localize production. This approach is already yielding results. According to the “Global Firepower” 2026, India remains forth in the world in terms of military power, significantly ahead of Pakistan in 14th place. This allows India to remain the main stabilizing force in South Asia.
Thus, India`s role in maintaining stability in the Asia-Pasific region has grown significantly in recent years. Delhi positions itself as a (net security provider and a key balancing factor. This means that all countries, regardless of size, should have a say in shaping the regional order. New Dehli seeks to strengthen, rather than undermine, existing regional structures through cooperation.
