I don't think Cougar is a capable platform for ASW. I hope some or all new cougar capable to do ASW to equipped our AH140 and Fremm (and maybe 30ffm too).

Most major navy are using medium to heavy helicopter for ASW duties.

MH-60R, SH-60 , AW101,SH-90 etc.


Larger helo = more loiter time = greater endurance.

Am sure the cougar have the space and power to accommodate ASW suite.

Personally I think the choice for Panther platform are due to the available deck space on most ID navy frigate/Corvette which is very small.

Hope they induct a larger ASW platform once the incoming frigate orders are inducted in the fleet.

I rather meant it for SH60 - MH60 AW101 etc. After merging twice i am totally confused with their designation and naming helicopters (AS, then EC now Airbus Helicopters). Is Cougar ASW still being offered?

H225M is the newest Cougar i think and it has an ASW variant, 11 tons MTOW is on par with SH-60.

Imo that should be standard to have 10~11 tons capable helicopter deck on all ASW oriented vessels whether it is corvette or frigate.

While, yes, it's true that American / Western AFV are generally more comfortable compared to the Russian ones, but BTR-50 is 1.2 meter shorter and half of the weight of LVTP-7 while carrying just one short of personnel (20 vs 21).

That doesn't mean I'll oppose it if our marine corps want to add more LVTP-7 though. That is, if they're going to consider purchasing refurbished ones from the USMC.

well, get some commonality with other forces make this sounds great. But back again if you want ASW, i think its save to say the by design helo is more better than by utilization.

Sadly, there's no ASW variants of what so called H225M and it's family
