This is a lucrative deal for the salesman and middleman though, one can get "consultation fee" from the both side, ahhh one old glory days....

On serious notes, they should taking profesional opinion from expert, crew and industrial sides about all the pros and cons. Though all would come with their respective consulting fees

Why would South Africa give up on the only 3 submarine they operate? Put aside the operational costs, they should be giving up from a decent naval force,in order to let submarines go. 4 frigates will have no meaning without any submarines.
It is a good to grab opportunity though, if their submarines are on sale.

I'm guessing that this Pretoria submarines are added bonus in what TKMS is offering. Don't know if the Navy actually wants used submarines even though its a bonus icing on the cake. Even the late KRI Nanggala commander voice his objection to any idea of the Defense Ministry getting used submarines.

Very curious on what the article is actually writing about this "audacious plan" by TKMS. We are all still guessing about this Pretoria submarines. Interesting to see the response from especially the French and "maybe" the Japanese side.

IIRC, during Rapim it's said that MoD wants lithium battery powered Scorpenes. Not sure about the TKMS lithium battery powered subs availability or if their lithium battery sub project is done successfully.

From this point of view (Li-On batt), Japanese offer (IF there's any) would probably much more attractive.

What kind of power TKMS has on South African Navy?.
I dont think a relatively young submarine class would be part of the deal unless South Africa is interested in selling those; then TKMS will be the middle men, will upgrade them prior to sale with a common pack which is going to be used in the newer submarines. It is also time for an MLU for those vessels i presume (15 years in service)
KRI Nanggala and her sister is above 40 years, this sub is fresh 15 years old.

Looks like they are in real trouble, state is restricting even the annual maintenance and refit budget. Probably it is time for an MLU as well (Subs commissioned between 2005-2008) and they won't be able to allocate a budget for that.
If they are truly interested in selling those, those are one of best to get second hand submarines in the world. equipped well, operational hours are quite low compared to any other navy submarines.
And If they are also selling the frigates, those should be purchased as well.

Type 218 will be hard if offered with local construction, those subs uses new construction technique which is quite different from the Nagapasa class and what Koreans have taught. Learning curve will be steep and new equipment and know-how transfer will be needed and i doubt if Germany offers that for orders below a certain a number.

Without local construction it will not have any contribution to the future plan too, It is best to continue Nagapasa deal and have at least fresh 6 Type 209 in service by 2026-2027. Those subs are small yet effective.
If 3 more comes from SA, and Germany carries MLU in Indonesia by transferring some know-how then it could be a lot better.

9 Type 209, + 4/6 German built 218/214 by 2026 can make sense for future. It will be a decent submarine flotilla.
