Rolls-Royce and Turkey’s EUAS International ICC agree study for compact nuclear power stations​

Rolls-Royce and Turkey’s EUAS International ICC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to carry out a study to evaluate both the technical, economical and legal applicability; and also the possibility of joint production of compact nuclear power stations (aka SMR) to underpin clean economic growth.
This announcement will help the provision of low carbon energy systems and marks an exciting new chapter in the strong relationship between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Turkey.
The agreement, which Rolls-Royce has signed in its role as a member of a consortium designing this power station, commits to a study that will look at the technical, licensing, commercial and investment cases for the deployment of the consortium’s power station; potential construction processes; and market potential in Turkey and globally.

The consortium which is designing the power station comprises Assystem, Atkins, BAM Nuttall, Laing O’Rourke, National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), Rolls-Royce, Jacobs, The Welding Institute (TWI) and Nuclear AMRC.
David Orr, consortium director, Rolls-Royce, said: “Addressing climate change is not only our planet’s most pressing long term challenge but also can be a crucial economic opportunity. Our power station is affordable, fast to deploy and is an attractive investment that will stimulate tens of thousands of jobs regionally and embed prosperity and quality of life for decades to come. Turkey’s domestic and regional nuclear power opportunities are incredibly exciting, and we look forward to exploring how our consortium’s power station will support its energy, economic and industrial ambitions.”
Yahya Yılmaz Bayraktarlı, CEO, EUAS International ICC, stated, “Our vision is to diversify electricity resources with nuclear power. We aim to develop a sustainable nuclear industry, which contributes to economic growth and social wealth of the country. Turkey already develops nuclear power plants of larger scale with its international partners. Competitiveness in price is an important indicator for us. The feasibility of small modular reactors is a research and development issue we continuously monitor.”
Components for compact power station will be manufactured in standardised sections in factories, before being transported to sites for rapid assembly inside a weatherproof canopy. This cuts costs by avoiding weather disruptions, provides excellent conditions for workers and secures incremental efficiency savings by using streamlined and advanced manufacturing processes for its components.
The result is lower upfront costs, and a faster, predictable construction and commissioning periods.
Collaboration between Turkey’s energy sector and Rolls-Royce has been active since 2013 when a joint supply chain study was undertaken with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey and Istanbul Technical University.
This new agreement will see phased collaboration during the next two years.

It is not a project but a propulsion lab to teach students.

Tübitak Sage is said to be working on Ramjet propulsion for a long time, they got new infrastructure for air breathing propulsion tests this year. Official Turkish project contracts between government and companies/institutions tend to be signed after projects reach a certain point maturity. Activity report from 2018, shows liquid-fueled Ramjet engine development project.

Bilecik Sheikh Edebali University Rector Prof. Dr. Şükrü Beydemir was included in the "World's Most Influential Scientists" list as a result of the research conducted on about 7 million researchers in coordination with Stanford University.
In the study conducted by a team of scientists from the United States and the Netherlands, criteria such as the number of scientific articles, number of citations, author order, number of authors were evaluated using the composite indicator scientific impact index. It is a lab which is used for numerous R&D or scientific projects too, not for teaching only.
However not all projects are meant for R&D, some projects are purely scientific to gain particular abilities later to be formed in R&D.

Turkish firm develops AI-powered software for drone swarms​

ANKARA, Turkey — A privately owned Turkish company says it has developed an artificial intelligence-based software for swarm drones.
MilSOFT announced Nov. 19 it developed the software after four years of research, and the the technology could be used in both fixed- and rotary-wing drone platforms.

A government aerospace official said swarm drones would be used in Turkey’s future unmanned aerial combat concept due to their low hardware costs and stealth technology.
“These drones could be ideal in asymmetrical warfare. They are quick, cost-effective and easy to operate,” the official said. “Most importantly, they are assets designed to minimize human loss in asymmetrical warfare.”

The Turkish military has been operating a big fleet of tactical and armed drones primarily in combat against Kurdish militants in Turkey’s southeast provinces but also in cross-border operations in northern Syria and Iraq. Turkish drones have also been used in Libya’s civil war and, most recently, in conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Many countries have yet to try drone swarm technology in a simulated, controlled environment. Turkey is among those that have the technology and the ability to test it in the field during operations.
Turkey’s top procurement office, the Presidency for Defense Industries, launched its Swarm UAV Technology Development and Demonstration program with a view to develop algorithms and software for the use of unmanned platforms with a swarm capability. The program is also meant to involve micro-scale companies as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.

MilSOFT has specialized in software solutions since 1998, and it is one of the participants of the government-run program. It has been offering products to the Turkish military for tasks including identifying detection by automatic moving target technology using AI, and machine-learning techniques with image-processing algorithms.

The company said with the integration of intelligence and image evaluation products, drone swarms can be updated with additional capabilities such as reconnaissance, detection, recognition, search and rescue, and vehicle tracking.

MilSOFT’s software-based solution will allow drone swarms to be launched from aerial, land and naval platforms, and the images they obtain will enter a central command system. In the meantime, the drone flocks will transfer images between different military units with a relay function.

AI technology can help catch elements that cannot be caught by the human eye and enable multiple attack capabilities by arming vehicles in operation.

MilSOFT’s AI-based software is also expected to enable swarm drones to perform frontal attacks on command from helicopters and provide operational support to other friendly platforms. The drones can reportedly operate autonomously from the beginning to the end of a mission, and can be instantly monitored and controlled via intelligence applications.

The UAVs have a flight time of more than half an hour and a payload capacity of 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds). The vehicles work with landing gear that can land on rough terrain.

While five UAVs are currently used in a herd in the field, this number can reach up to 25 in a controlled environment. MilSOFT aims to make a drone swarm of 50 operational vehicles.

Communication between the drones is also provided by MilSOFT’s own technology. Vehicles can communicate with each other from up to 500 meters. There is also a 10-kilometer network solution for data transfers.

MilSOFT plans to integrate its technology for underwater and surface platforms as well as land vehicles.

Great! STM had performed trials with 25 kamikaze drones and these drones were tested at Karabakh war. Now, A new software was developed to control 50 kamikaze drones. The future battlefield won’t have much differences than a hell for enemy.

Losks like they want to make sure no outside power can take control of Turkish systems that use chips from the major brands. Very smart and strategic decision.

In following years, We will see some great progress on national chip field. All parameters indicate that Turkey will make a new investment worth almost billion $ to new facility called Yital AŞ. (not Yital Lab). Yital lab started transition of current manufacturing tech to 130 nm SiGe and CMOS chips. In addition to this facility, It is believed that New facility called Yital Aş (%51 Aselsan) will have a manufacturing capability of 90nanometer CMOS and BICMOS chips, later they are going to develop 65 nm technology. The national processor Çakil will be developed in paralel to these progresses on semi-conductors. Further variants of Çakil will have higher frequency output with multi-core structure. The first variants of Çakil will be most likely produced by Sirterra (Malaysia) and As far as I know they have 110nm production process.

If someone is going to invest 1bln € in a chip factory, you will need more than just defense customers to make it worthwhile.

These chips will have a wide range of usage in many fields. GaN semiconductors were developed for Turkish transistors and they will be used on advanced AESA radars. GaN will be used for telecommunication infrastructure and antennas in 5G field. Turkey is going to make progress on SiGe, CMOS, BİCMOS chips in new facility. These are the chip technologies that is being used by high tech health devices, automotive industry, trains, all kind of sensors, intelligent home technologies, smart devices, optics, home devices and finally military electronics. I checked the roadway where Israel followed and I realised that they have also developed almost same technologies Turkey has been working. Today, They have a big chip and wafer manufacturing plant that has expertise on 180, 130, 90, 65 nm manufacturing technologies. They have developed 45nm process as well.
