Any idea about the actual maximum range? surely 561km is not the maximum range
I don't think 561 km is a coincidence, might be done in response to that one particular country (and the satellites) that kept restricting any missile system TR developing, at 280km, if incorporates any component supplied by them.

280x2 + 1 , that +1 has a meaning there. From this point onwards it is not about the max range of this missile, but the max range that TR can achieve in missile programs.

You will see Greeks crying about this soon and EU and US making statements on 'worrying developments in ME that will tip down the stability of the region" and even condemning.

If Tayfun is placed on a ship or a sub, even a lesser sub that won't go deep it basically expands our reach to most of our surroundings. Looking at the missile's modest range and size if it can be launched from a bomber it can cover a region as much as you practically want.

I think the new name of BORA II is TAYFUN. Minister of National Defense CANİKLİ, in a statement to the press on April 26, 2018, said, “Our completely national missile with a range of 280 km, BORA I, has entered the inventory. Now we are working on BORA II, which has more advanced technology and longer range.”
He added: “Work has started for BORA II. If I explain the details, you would forget both KILIÇDAROĞLU and the election. We will explain it in the future." BORA II, which is expected to have a range of 500km+, can have a different type of guidance system and can also be used in ship attack mission.

Damm! That's gonna scare the hell out of lot of adversaries!
Congratulations guys! That is an strategic achievement.

@Yasar any guess if it may have shaped trajectory and mid flight maneuverability along with the 550+ km range ?
As per @Anmdt ’s suggestion regarding carrying a message, I think (2 x280) + 1 means few more things:
- If you measure a crows flight distance from Izmir for 561km, it covers the total of Greek mainland, most of their Adriatic waters and more.
- +1 also means that It‘s total range is more than what it has flown. 560 + …..

As this missile will be flying for nearly 8 minutes it needs to have good survivability. Mid course manoeuvring is a prerequisite in missiles of this type. Changing altitude at random intervals and manoeuvring will achieve that. Since it is developed from Bora , I am guessing, it will have quasi ballistic trajectory. This together with manoeuvring will make it less susceptible to some common anti ballistic missile systems. 3.6 Mach average speed means hypersonic flight in most parts of it’s course.
Depending on how heavy it is in terminal stage and how aerodynamically it is designed, it will most likely have a much higher terminal speed than Bora. That too should help it’s survivability. This missile sounds like a Kinzhal on steroids (with our seeker head and guidance electronics).

Roketsan Star Tracking Navigation System Studies

Roketsan Advanced Technology and Systems (ITS) Assistant General Manager Advanced Technologies Directorate has produced the only system among the star-following navigation systems developed in Turkey, which can operate in dynamic conditions such as vibration and high rotational speed, as a result of the star-following navigation system development studies started in 2017.

Star Tracking Navigation Systems (YTNS)

Star Tracking Navigation Systems (YTNS) are navigation systems that generate highly accurate orientation information. With the optical components and detectors they have, YTNS detects the stars in the images they take, compares the positions of the stars with respect to each other with the positions on the known star maps, and creates sensitive orientation information with sub-degree accuracy. [Roketsan Magazine January 2020]

Details about the project were shared in the article, Star Tracking Navigation Systems, written by Roketsan engineers Selva Sargın Güçlü, Aslı Doğan and Mehmet Akif Koca in the January 2020 issue of Roketsan Magazine.

Roketsan continues the verification studies of the system, for which optical, mechanical and algorithm design has been made within the scope of the project. With the completion of the verification work, a precision orientation system with <60 arc seconds angle accuracy, <6 kg in weight, and generating the first orientation information in less than 10 seconds will be included in the navigation system.

Roketsan supplied and tested more than one detector within the scope of the study. Alternative algorithm design studies were carried out in the phases of star center determination, star matching and orientation determination in order to develop YTNS suitable for use in dynamic platforms simultaneously with optical design studies.

After the design studies, the optical elements that were produced were assembled, the software containing the algorithm and star maps were embedded in the electronic card and night tests were started.

While the specified YTNS design and testing processes were continuing, integration studies were carried out with the ANS and KKS receiver as a component of the navigation system of the targeted product. With this study, it was possible to observe the effect of the platform on which YTNS will be installed, in the modeling simulation environment.

Roketsan's Star Tracking Navigation System solution; It is the only system among star-following navigation systems developed in Turkey that can operate in dynamic conditions such as vibration and high rotation speed. YTNS is planned to be used in various projects in the future.

The navigation technology that Roketsan is likely to use in the TAYFUN anti-ship ballistic missile.

Tayfon lunchers looks like Bora ones.
Any idea about the spects , weight , length , warhead etc etc?
I hope Roketsan didnt reduce warhead weight to increase range .

We can reach 560 or more kms with same diameter (610 mm). Bora has ten years old technology. It is sure that we have proceeded so much in material, engine and fuel techs for ten years. Iran can reach 700 km with 600 mm missiles or maybe more.

Logically, we can say that we reached the capacity demonstrated today at least 2 years ago.

Just a few weeks ago, we evaluated our predictions about this in the other topic.

With the ŞİMŞEK-1 Launch Vehicle, which will have a payload capacity of 400 kilograms, it is aimed to reach an altitude of 550 kilometers in 2027.

This indirectly says a lot. It makes MRBM distances possible when the missile's apogee reached above 350-400km. Roughly, a ballistic missile capable of covering a distance of 2000 km climbs to an altitude of 500 kilometers on average.

Also, It can be accepted that Roketsan currently produces/can produce ballistic missiles that can reach a distance of +500 km, as of 2018/20.

Let's go into a little more detail about ballistic missile and apogee altitudes.

Also, the fact that the missile flight range between the 57th artillery brigade(or Manisa elevation) and Araxos(the furthest Greek airbase to the Turkish mainland) is exactly 560 km is purely coincidental, please do not misunderstand.

We need to be able to take out large ships with a missile, think of carrier killer. Tayfun may or may not have this strength, hard to guess.

Tayfun aka Bora 2 is the continuation of Bora. The missile is similar to Bora in weight and dimensions and carries a similar warhead to roughly double the range of Bora(280km official, 360km proved). I don't want to quote the exact maximum range as it is not released but it is somewhere between 700-800km. Tayfun can reach 1000km with a lighter warhead exchanged for more fuel. Tayfun comes with different guidance options(including but not limited to carrier killer variant) and the trucks that can carry Bora can also carry Tayfun so every Bora launcher is also a Tayfun launcher. This is not a test launch Tayfun is currently in the inventory with a good number of missiles have already been delivered. It went unnoticed due to its secrecy and its similarity to the Bora missile. İstanbul to Atina is roughly 561km, from İzmir a 561km arc covers all of the Greek mainland, 561 is more than double the official range of the Bora missile (280*2+1 that +1 has a big meaning) This test shenanigan is done intentionally to give Greece a huge warning.

I think the most strategic aspect of the missile is that it is very well packaged and can still be fired from a tactical truck. Hence its propulsion design need attention. I believe that one of the most important issues in missiles under 1000 km is about mobility and maintenance. Precision strike is of course a big plus factor, but keeping these batteries constantly active in case of a possible war is a much bigger plus.

The specific features and weight of the warhead on it will probably never be disclosed and it is not an export product anyway. We can say that if we can produce this missile with a large numbers that can saturate all air bases and strategic facilities at the same time, we have gained another big X factor.

Now it is stated that the ballistic shot has been made. In other words, it means that the missile rose with the thrust, came to the top and then went down with gravity.

Now, looking at the shooting video, the launch pods were shot in a pretty upright position. If these pods were fired with a slightly lower angle, the missile's range would be longer. Of course, this is somewhat determined by the state of the war. So here are the landforms, the locations of the radars, their ranges, etc.

My guess is that when the conditions are right, this missile can hit 700 km.
