NATO FORCES TAKE PART IN SEA SHIELD EXERCISE

CONSTANTA, Romania – Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) participated in the Romania-led exercise Sea Shield that runs 19-29 March, in the Black Sea.

Maritime, air and land assets, from eight NATO Allies came together for the largest and most complex multinational exercise organized by the Romanian Naval Forces in the Black Sea for 2021.

Sea Shield 21 is an annual Romanian-led multinational naval exercise focused on enhancing interoperability between participating nations, emphasizing anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-air warfare, and mine countermeasures mission sets. Sea Shield participating nations include Bulgaria, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the United States.

SNMG2 participated in this exercise with four surface units, ESPS Mendez Nuñez, as the flagship, BGS Smeli, ROS Regina Maria and TCG Kemalreis, three of them fitted with organic helicopters.

This exercise represents an outstanding opportunity to increase mutual understanding, interoperability, confidence and cohesion among all participants
During the execution phase, NATO maritime warfare concepts and tactics were practiced based on a crisis response scenario.

"This exercise represents an outstanding opportunity to increase mutual understanding, interoperability, confidence and cohesion among all participants and provides a great occasion to show NATO presence and assure the maritime commitment to collective defence, contributing to NATO success and increased security of the international community” said Rear Admiral Manuel Aguirre, Commander of SNMG2.

After completing this exercise, SNMG2 will resume its program of activities in the Black Sea, a region of strategic importance to NATO, with three allied nations, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey and two regional partners among its littoral countries.

SNMG2 is one of four standing forces that comprise the maritime component of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), which is part of the NATO Response Force (NRF). To respond to contingency situations, additional forces can be added to these groups, with the NATO command staff on board and the ships of the Group as the nucleus, capable of providing timely support to NATO operations.

I am curious, but isn’t it counter productive to let NATO allies use Turkish bases like this. I mean the embargo we’re put under should limit access to those countries.

This way they’ll just have some other NATO country fly the plane etc and do the job.

Leonardo radio selected by Boeing for NATO AWACS

Leonardo has been contracted by Boeing to provide its new software-defined radio, the SWave Airborne SDR SRT-800’ for NATO’s fleet of E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft. One of the few military assets that is owned and operated directly by NATO, the AWACS fleet is being modernised by Boeing to maintain its operational viability through 2035 under the Final Lifetime Extension Programme (FLEP).

Leonardo’s SRT-800 will provide the AWACS fleet with secure and cyber-resilient air-to-air and air-to-ground connectivity. This security is becoming increasingly critical to all kinds of military operations as cyber-attacks continue to be a clear and present threat. Available for civil and military customers, the low size, weight and power requirements of the SRT-800 allows it to be fitted to most fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, manned or unmanned. Ideal for retrofit, a single SRT-800 radio replaces a number of avionic units that have traditionally been separate units, including UHF/VHF radio, SATCOM, SINCGARS and a crypto device.

Under the contract, Boeing will integrate the SWave Airborne SDR SRT-800 into the mission system of the E-3A aircraft. Because the radios are software-defined, they can then be completely re-configured when needed via a software update without having to modify the hardware. This makes the radios extremely versatile as they can be modified simply and inexpensively. Notably, the radios are compliant with the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) standard for maximum flexibility.

Originally designed as an elevated radar platform, the E-3A has evolved over 30 years to address the realities of geopolitical change. NATO’s Airborne Early Warning and Control Force has become an essential part of the Alliance’s air battle management capability and continues to remain operationally relevant through successive modernisation programmes. Leonardo’s SWave Airborne SDR SRT-800 will ensure that NATO’s AWACS fleet continues to be able to communicate in a secure, cyber-resilient way until its out-of-service date in the 2035 timeframe.

NATO successfully tests Rapid Air Mobility procedures

NATO successfully tested procedures to fast-track the airlift of troops and equipment across Europe in a simulated crisis exercise in April. The three-day test of the Alliance’s “rapid air mobility” initiative was held in close coordination with Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation.

"By facilitating quicker air movements across the Alliance, we can be more effective in preventing crises, more efficient in deploying our forces, and quicker in reacting when unforeseen situations arise", said NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment Camille Grand.
NATO’s rapid air mobility initiative, or RAM, is part of wider Alliance efforts to boost the readiness of Allied troops and equipment. Aircraft on RAM missions are assigned a unique NATO call sign making it easier to move across borders with essential equipment, supplies and personnel, as quickly as possible. In March 2020, RAM procedures were activated for the first time to enable the urgent transport of medical supplies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event, which ran from 26-28 April 2021, involved experts from 12 allied nations along with NATO’s Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWACS) Force in an effort to stress-test deployment planning. As part of the exercise, Eurocontrol’s Network Manager, NATO and national flight planning teams successfully coordinated in the simulated deployment of allied aircraft allowing faster cross-border military movements.

Leonardo will upgrade NATO AWACS aircraft

NATO_E3_640.jpg

As announced on 21 May, Leonardo has been contracted by Boeing – as prime contractor for NAPMA (NATO AEWC Program Management Agency) – to upgrade the first NATO E-3A test aircraft with the latest hardware. The upgrade is performed within the framework of the NATO Final Lifetime Extension Programme (FLEP). Its aim is to maintain the NATO’s fleet of E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, which are operative until 2035.

The activity, to be completed within 2023, includes the installation and checkout of newly-developed hardware under this Final Lifetime Extension Programme. It will be accomplished by Leonardo’s personnel of the Venice-Tessera plant in Italy. Leonardo will then also provide support during the final test phase at the Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base.

It did not come as a surprise that Leonardo was contracted by Boeing: the Italian firm has performed Depot Level Maintenance (DLM) activities within the framework of the NATO AWACS (Airborne Warning & Control System) programme since 1986.

NATO allies ‘stepping up' on defence spending, Stoltenberg says

NATO is making significant progress toward its goal of getting member countries to spend at least 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defence by 2024, according to the head of the transatlantic alliance.

Of NATO's 30 members, 10 are expected to meet the 2% target this year, up from just three in 2014, when the goal was agreed to at the Wales Summit. A majority of those that are not yet at 2% have plans in place to reach the target by 2024.

“The good news is that we are on the right track,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told the Washington-based Defense Writers Group on 15 June. “Allies are stepping up. Allies take this very seriously.”

While Germany will likely remain shy of 2% it has, nevertheless, boosted its defence spending from 1.19% of GDP in 2014 to 1.53% this year. “That really makes a difference,” Stoltenberg said.

An important message of NATO's 14 June Brussels Summit was that the alliance should continue working toward the 2% goal, he added.

The 10 countries that are projected to be at or above 2% this year are Croatia (2.79%), Estonia (2.28%), France (2.01%), Greece (3.82%), Latvia, (2.27%), Lithuania (2.03%), Poland (2.10%), Romania, (2.02%), the United Kingdom (2.29%), and the United States (3.52%).

Norway is at 1.85%, while the lowest spenders are Belgium (1.12%), Canada (1.39%), Luxembourg (0.57%), Slovenia (1.28%), and Spain (1.02%).
