TN wants existing ESSM missiles to be fired from the national VLS system. There is a big amount of ESSM missiles in stock and they have a lot of life left in them. This requirement came directly from the TN. Talks are going on between Roketsan and TN about which missiles will be integrated into national VLS. Meanwhile, studies will be conducted for a quad pack version of Hisar-O+, Hisar-RF, G-40/G-60, etc. BTW i was talking about the combat load of the first I class.


Good news bro.
The ESSM missile in stock includes not only Block-1 but also Block-2. If I remember correctly, MoU was signed for an amount of around 145 Block-II after 2015 and it was mentioned in the news that Turkey took delivery of some Blok-2 ESSM missiles. It is not known how many Block-2 missiles were actually supplied while the Hisar-O+ and Rf missiles were in the test and delivery phase but it is logical that these missiles in the inventory will be used with national vertical launch systems on new ships.

If they can actually pack the Siper Block-2 missile in a double pack, then that would be a truly outstanding success story. The fact that 32 Siper missiles with a range of over 100km can be integrated on a 113m long ship (when necessary), creates a very serious defense capability.

TRT Haber has displayed the national sea cannon: It will enter the inventory in 2022​

Developed under the leadership of the Machinery and Chemical Industry, the national sea cannon will take its place in the TAF inventory in February 2022.

The national sea cannon, which was developed in a record time of 12 months, has approximately 17 thousand parts, and all of these parts are produced locally and nationally.

With the developed system, Turkey has become one of the few countries in the world that can produce sea cannons. The national sea cannon has an effective range of 16 kilometers.

The sea cannon, which has 360-degree mobility, can shoot 80 shots per minute in 5 different modes. It can rise up to an angle of 85 degrees on the vertical axis.

Unlike existing systems, it will be equipped with a digital control system developed with domestic and national facilities.

Friday at 14:00, Large Cavitation Tunnel and Maneuvering Test Facility located at the ITU Maslak Campus, will be launched with a ceremony. The Tunnel will be operated by ITU, managed by TRTest, an affiliated company of the SSB.

As expected, Mr. Demir (President of SSB) will be present in there.

This is a big event and capability gain, the media or other Defense news sources are not covering this, but this capability is closely linked to anything going underwater. Thus we may expect to hear some progresses on Torpedo programs.

Datum AŞ multi-purpose midget submarine design, that will be the base configuration for 4 different designs (to start with); SOF Delivery (shown in image), Submarine Rescue (limited depth), Touristic submarine and modular submarine development test-bed, the project is now supported by SSB via TKY (Technological Contribution Responsibility) of the Sefine Shipyard - DIMDEG project.

The SOF variant will have a floating antenna.

Fits into a 20TEU container and transport aircraft.

Importance of the facility;

ITU-KAT (Large Cavitation Tunnel) in a nutshell, with variable depressurization/pressurization, 1.5*1.2*5.5 meters test section and 15m/s+ top velocity, 1MW electrical motor;

Submarine programs (Milden, STM500, MP-MSub) and AUV/UUV (3 known to exist at least) will benefit with resistance, form optimization and self propulsion and propeller adaptation and hydro-acoustics tests.

Torpedo programs (Akya, Orka and others) will benefit with full scale experiments reducing verification of the control algorithms before it is fielded. If not the full scale it will be near to the full scale eliminating scale effects.

Surface platforms (TF-2000 and others) will benefit with dedicated form optimization, sonar dome optimization or even optimization of the sonar dome construction material increasing the hull and sonar efficiency, as well as improving acoustic signature.

Propeller efficiency and the ones above will be tested in different depth conditions with ease.

And other R&D or Research projects related to above matters, such as coating material application, corrosion etc.

Also it could be beneficial for hypersonic (in air) projects to get a review from this tunnel because water tunnels are known to be used to mimic high reynolds flow. Until a hypersonic capable wind tunnel is emerging this will serve the duty.

Maneuvering test systems;

Free-running scaled automous model will enable maneuvering tests to be conducted for several days in several special conditions that is typically not possible to conduct via simulations. Also the free-running model can be used for data extraction to feed the control algorithms of the USVs. With a dedicated follow-on air drone, the captured response will be beneficial.

Planar Motion Mechanism is beneficial in many levels, it also allows torpedo-like systems manuevering response to be recovered from several tests at fixed or variable angles.

ADIK-SSB funded the Cavitation Tunnel and Maneuvering System Project (KATMANSIS), ASELSAN-SSB funded the Cavitation Tunnel Facility because the funds of the earlier project (KATMANSIS) didn't meet the end and SSB has found a way by introducing DIKMAN-PARKAL project for DIKONS of ASELSAN and funding the facility construction.

They are planning to introduce "Advanced Marine Research Center", upgrading towing tank to the latest technology and overhauling and merging the management structure with Cavitation Tunnel. It will be co-managed by TR-TEST, ITU (the Naval Architecture Faculty).

They also have done a demonstration run for Ismail Demir, with a propeller intentionally brought to the cavitation stage.

The tunnel currently capable of reaching 16.5 m/s flow velocity within the safety, nearing 17 m/s with a sustainable smooth flow again in safety limits. Currently on top of the "Large Cavitation Tunnels" on the world in terms of flow rate, 7th including the Very Large Cavitation Tunnels. Unfortunately it is not even close to Very Large Cavitation Tunnels which is twice larger than the ITU-KAT.

And this hint merely excluding India's FRT, Kuasar (subcontract of ASFAT for PN Milgem), the future exports are linked to the projects with undisclosed customer / project names.

Roketsan: Denizaltı cisimler için deney sistemi, "a test system for underwater objects" wonder what kind of "underwater objects" Roketsan has in the brochures.

Looks like Turkish Navy, after nearing to achieve their dream of Aircraft Carrier, now eyeing another long-dream of theirs; Nuclear powered submarine.

Milden will come in phases, the latter phase will be focusing on a larger hull with longer endurance, if Navy achieves their endurance and submerged time goal purely with domestically developed fuel cells or Li-Ion batteries they will let go of the Nuclear propulsion, for the latter option they have already been having talks with possible partners in aiding the nuclear propulsion and the ToT to operate it. The current status shows that, Fuel Cells or Li-Ion or mixed use of those easily satisfies the requirement that TN is looking for.

Both SSB and TN is now aiming to develop the second hull (let it be either NG-LHD with drone ability or Aircraft Carrier tier) with domestic resources, thus unlike it was in the LHD project, the next projects (including Milden, TF-2000) will be carried out and completed in Turkey and foreign partners will aid certain parts as subcontractors, if needed, under a mutual ToT scheme.

Could this be the recent statement made by Erdogan about Russian involvement in submarine making?
Nuclear reactor supplied by Russians! Hmmm!!
I had rather stick to local Li-Ion based propulsion..

Likely it is, and I don't think Russians are the only option here.
Fuel Cell / Li-Ion also satisfies the requirement and even the beyond, so it is less-likely for Navy to ask nuclear propulsion that will ten-fold the complexity.
