TCG OruçReis (F-245) Frigate, which is the first ship to be modernized within the scope of the BARBAROS Class Frigate Half-Life Modernization (YÖM/MLU) Project, was taken into the dock at the end of January 2022 at Gölcük Shipyard Command and work on it began. Comprehensive Half-Life Modernization works on the TCG OruçReis Frigate, together with the planned maintenance/repair activities, took a total of 16 months (4 months of dismantling, 4 months of integration and 8 months of Port and Navigation Acceptance Tests) and after sea navigation/acceptance tests, will be reinstated in the first half of 2023. And then expected to enter service. After the modernization, the total weight of the ship is expected to increase by approximately 200 tons.

We are coming to strengthen our power in the seas with STM500!⚓

Our STM500 submarine, specially designed for shallow waters, capable of being submerged for 30 days and capable of firing 8 heavy torpedoes and guided missiles, will be a force multiplier in Blue Homeland!


The fact that a submarine of only around 500 tons participates in the operation with 8 Akya torpedoes (4+4) or SubAtmaca in a sea like the Aegean and can stay under the water for 30 days will create an indescribable power projection. No platform in the Aegean will be safe once the STM500s are in the inventory.

These features we mentioned are almost close to those described for U214. Turkey seems to have sworn to change the rules of the game both in the air, sea and underwater.

i wonder if we can make unmanned drone versions of these subs.

VLF communication is limited to 10-40 metres in depth. If submarine is any deeper, forget any conventional communication. Unless ELF communication technology is developed to a level to perform two way full digital signal transference without interference, long range underwater unmanned systems are going to be beyond reach of navies. Currently, due to very large space requirements, no ELF transmitters can be placed in a submarine.

They can split the wave and send portions of it in a sequence.
This has been done with very small satellite dishes as well.

yeah, I'd reckon it would be very similar to the AESA radar array tech.

There is no effective and capable system that can transmit large information blocks to a fully submerged submarine and receive from it to be able to remotely control it over large distances.
A submarine , especially a nuclear one has to receive launch orders from command centre without surfacing. It need not necessarily send communication. But must be able to receive command info. This is achieved nowadays with VLF and ELF systems, however inefficient they are. Currently Lockheed Martin employs a series of buoys strategically placed at sea to convey VLF/ELF signals to and fro submarines in the form of text messages.
Latest Quantum Key Distribution - QKD system being developed by ITT Exelis, has the best chance of success for two way communication. VLF and ELF systems manage 300bps data transfer speeds at best and can not really go deep enough. But QKD system manages 172kbps at full depth via satellite at the moment.
It sends chunks of quantum data and uses a very intrinsically secure system to do it.
When this technology matures and becomes more than just simple two way radio communication then we will have a remote control submarine.

This is only one tiny bit part to send commands or receive information from a submarine.
Another important part is the underwater navigation at the seas we are planning to deploy this unmanned submarine, Aegean Sea is challenging on this aspect.

Germans gave "covid delays" as one of the reasons and are playing the stalling game. No official embargo on naval systems but also stopping delivery for pathetic reasons. As I said earlier this project can be delayed but can't be stopped.

In the long run, it will be their loss. But our gain. It will make us more determined to prepare and produce all subsystems that the vessel needs, in house.
After the way they have behaved, we will never buy any armoured vehicles from them. We definitely won’t be buying any engines from them. No more ships or submarines either.
I wish we stopped buying their cars too!

I could not really understand your comment. You are saying that the reason for delay is actually an embargo, and Covid is put forth as the excuse. International supply agreements rarely allow delays with no compensation, are you suggesting we have signed an amateurish agreement with Germany, and we are entitled to no compensation, none at all?
