Within the scope of the DENİZKURDU-II/2025 Exercise, one of our SH-70 helicopters belonging to the Naval Forces, conducting flight operations off the coast of Antalya, made an emergency landing in the sea due to a technical malfunction, according to initial assessments.
The health condition of the four personnel on board the helicopter is good, and they have been transferred to the hospital for precautionary checks.

If I could ask one question (regarding our procurement for our navy) to someone in charge, it would be "Why on earth we haven't gotten a AgustaWestland Merlin yet?" It comes from 2 countries we have better relationships with, Britain and Italy, made by a company we have already worked without much hassle with, and uses Rolls Royce engines which has shown willingness to work with us before.
It is disturbingly clear that we are not going to have something equivalent for quite a while, even if we complete the helicopter itself, we currently don't have an engine for it. So, we are going to have to deal with other countries anyway, at lest we could've gotten some helicopters we desperately need from it.

Didn't they sell it with british/french engines, so France had to approve the sale too? Afaik they sell it now with only american engines.

I remember very well the reports years ago of the demand for more helicopters by the Navy, I also remember the credible reports of there being interest and talks for the AW101 by the Navy as more Seahawks then due to sanctions were impossible to procure.
It has been 3-5 years since then and the same people are still using the same excuses not to spend the money. " We will make our own" Gökbey flew first in 2017, we have the year 2025 and it only "entered" inventory in very limited numbers this year. Developing and producing an Naval helicopter is even more challenging, we would be able to do it but it would take the same time if not even longer. We don't even have engines for gods sake.
Türkiye, acc. to reports, will be taken off CAATSA. This is the perfect opportunity to fill gaps that need to be fixed. But even then we won't see the first helicopters until 2028 the earliest.

If we build 20-30 helicopters too many. I bet that they can be sold with profit, just as our Ada classes being built FFBNW can be sold off the moment they pass sea tests. Because of the situation the world is in atm. Our need is great, and while we may be cash strapped there are countries willing to pay a bit extra for instant delivery.
Look at how Israel managed to deliver AD system to Denmark a day or two after the acquisition. Battle proven goes like hot cakes ffs. And while there are a flood of UAV, UCAVs and such, Utility helicopters and naval variants are very much still needed.

We haven’t even started on the MLU of the remainder of our Barbaros Class ships.
1. Optimistically it could be because they want to see if what they have done on TCG Orucreis has improved the ship’s overall performance to a level that would warrant the remainder to be upgraded as well.
2. Realistically either they haven’t got the spare finances to do it and/or they can’t spare the ships as they are still in use.
@Saithan bro, if they could build helicopters like Gokbey with TS1400, our forces would want them before other countries.
We need more Blackhawks and a good number of Seahawks like yesterday.
What we need is really a T700 engine production license with a view to have 2000HP and 2500+HP power levels. And know how to navalise the helicopters and their engines we will build.
It is embarrassing to see AH-1W Super Cobras operating from our brand new amphibious assault ship. These helicopters were purchased nearly 35 years ago. And they were second hand then.
Merlin helicopters use RR developed engines. But those engines’ production rights have been passed on to Safran. So you would have to seek French approval. (RTM 322 Turbomecha).
Merlin helicopters are manufactured in UK. Their engines supplied by Safran through their subsidiary in Fareham UK in line with the contract Safran signed when it took over the rights of the RTM322.

Ah fuck. Wonder if they have work around for that, because one way or the other (whether from US or somewhere else), we need these helicopters yesterday. At least until our alternatives are ready.

GE-CT7-8 series is a more powerful engine. It can develop up to 3000HP. Previously I had mentioned that we could redevelop the T700 engine we are building for our Blackhawks in to this engine as there was a clause in the license agreement to allow that.
Where much heavier lift and higher performance are required this engine is used. UK owned Merlins‘ engines are “predominantly” RTM-322. In fact some 80+% of all Merlins have RTM-322 engines.
Danish airforce and Italian airforce have ordered their A101s with CT7 engines.
Some 6 Merlin helicopters were built with GE engines for the POTUS’s use. But it was later cancelled and sold to Canada.
GE-CT7 range engines are the commercial version of the military T700 engine. It has been developed to provide more power to be used for heavy lift platforms. Now it is being used in military helicopters.
GE engines give better fuel efficiency and maintenance cycles.
It is a choice buyers have. Currently new A101 helicopters are fitted and offered with GE engines. But as far as I know, the version that is fitted to the military helicopters is 1491KW (2000HP) version; whereas the RTM322s fitted to Merlin are 1567KW (2101HP) power rated.
The CT7-8E engine develops 1884KW (2527HP) and used in civilian certified situations. In one engine inoperative cases this engine has superlative performance with two engines.
Getting back to French approval, if the GE engines are chosen, then US approval is going to be needed. But it is up to UK or Italy to get that for us.
