This is a myth. The majority of innovations and developments in the 20th century didn't come from academia but from researchers working in the private sector or independently. Academic productivity has become even worse since then.You owe every inch of progress in those projects, you are bragging about, to those academic papers.. academic works and universities. Most aerospace projects in Turkey are just reinventing what others' already did, most of those things already in academic papers. Also today's achievements have not become possible in one day, today's aerospace projects are as a result of 40 year accumulation of knowledge and human resource. None of these could be possible without METU(ODTÜ) or ITU or others, and I can say I had professors from USA, Korea, India and more in METU, also worked with Greeks and other. We learned a lot from foreigners, my University extensively encourages working with foreign professors or going abroad to acquire knowledge. Racism has no place in academics, Greece and Turkey may have problems, like we have in Cyprus but that is irrelevant to human to human relations, cultural exchange, sports or etc. I don't want to brag but METU is one of the pillars of advanced technologies (defence projects) in Turkey today! and success of the University comes from open minded culture (where some are constantly trying to undermine). Nobody should hate or judge others because of their name or ethnicity, I hope one day problems could be solved peacefully.
Additional information, most of the time academic papers have multiple authors and most of the time one is Advisor / Professor of the writer. Of course education is important.

Academic works are for creating basis for human resource and establishing theoretical basis, creating or innovating products are not primary task, so hearing innovations from universites shouldn't be expected. if someone discover something useful, they establish a firm and commercialize it. That does not mean academics is in decline, then why would some bigger companies trying to establish their own universities? One of my friends is working for Intel, Intel gave internships to METU Msc students, then recruit the ones who created best papers. Yet another example former Intel engineers left the company and become professors. Even though these people working for a tech company they continue to their academic works, papers throughout their life, it is symbiotic relationship. Engineers does not pop up from ground and discover new technologies, they come from universities, post graduate studies. Why would Mr. Aksit or Kotil give so much importance to universities ? TAI and TEI working with universities extensively.. Why does Aselsan develop wind turbines with METU, at the end METU has nothing to do with developing generators or blades, many academic studies have been made which could be used as data input required to develop end product. Aselsan gifted wind turbines to some universities so they can work on it, hundreds of papers made (for free) and some of those papers could help for product improvement. Well, when I was mentioning "universities" and academics, I didn't mention decreasing quality and constantly popping up private apartment universities.. yes but that does not change the value of real universities, hard working good researchers. There is a big decline in quality as quantity increases, true.

There is also a decline due to generation* and brain drain (in last 10 years.) A simple example, some years ago when I first encountered with the new generation in the university, I noticed that they are very effortless, they expect information to come as a notification, or can be found as first search item in the google search! they are effortless to dig up for information or for using books!. Quality definitely decreasing due to many factors (which is a threat for future of Turkey) but coming to main point, human resource of defence companies or others come from local or foreign universities.. Like the speaker in the video.. Theoretical studies still made in or via universities.
And you know, getting PHD, Msc or DR etc, nowadays easier if you are closer to AKP... so of course Academic quality is decreasing![]()

The national helicopter engine is preparing for the first flight
Turkey's aviation engines center TUSAŞ Engine Industries AŞ (TEI) is preparing to deliver the TEI-TS1400 turboshaft engine, developed to power national helicopters, earlier than planned.
TEI is in Baku Crystal Hall and Seaside Boulevard National Park, with the support of important institutions and companies of the country, under the management of the Turkish Technology Team Foundation (T3 Foundation), the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey, where Anadolu Agency is the Global Communication Partner. exhibited the engines produced and developed in different classes at TEKNOFEST Azerbaijan.
Mahmut Faruk Akşit, Chairman and General Manager of TEI, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the first prototype of the helicopter engine TS1400 was delivered to TAI about 1-1.5 years ago, in a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to start the helicopter integration studies. said they did.

"These values are about 100 hp higher than the competitor's current imported engine. We have increased our engine to 1570 hp, or even above it. There is an emergency take-off scenario in case it has to be overloaded for certification and qualification. Normally, the engine is designed at a maximum continuous power level of 1400 hp. even though it can be run to produce 1570 horsepower for 2 minutes and we need to show it to the certification authority. As of now, we have exceeded this power level, and we can run it at 1570 horsepower for much longer periods, not 2 minutes. This is a nice turning point. We will push it. We will announce the developments as the tests are done."

Akşit shared the dialogue between the President of the Presidency of Defense Industries, İsmail Demir, and the TS1400 engine, and said:
"Our president cornered us by saying 'Give this as soon as possible'. We are already a little ahead of the normal project plan and we are pushing our team. Our goal was to carry out the first manned flight before the end of next year by obtaining the authorization from the General Directorate of Civil Aviation. Our President forced us to give it by the end of the year. "We promised to deliver an engine for the first flight at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. I hope we will do our best to deliver on that promise. Internally we have pushed this program a little further."

Bad experience with PD-170, does not necessarily mean the ts1400 will go through the same process. Plus Tai designedthegokbey entirely by themselves with a clear vision that it would have to run on ts1400, so the integration process has been foreseen and worked on for a long time. I don't know what his source is but he is wrong. The problem with TEI engines is their cost. TAI still uses PD-155 rather than PD-170, especially for the light male category UAVs where the selling point of PD-170 aka high altitude performance is not that important. Turkish UAVs operate around 20k feet as it is the sweet spot for sensors. Because you can get most of the performance from a PD-155 at a substantially cheaper price PD-170 is produced low in numbers. TEI tries to localize the production of aluminum motor blocks, accessories for the engine, etc to reduce the price. IMHO TEI should partner with an automotive company for the serial production that produces similar engines.PD170 is fully operationl. What is your source?
Yeah, it is a modification of Centurion 2.0 one of the reasons why it is dirt cheap. The engine is bought as a COTS product and only modified here.PD-155 is a straight copy of Centurion 2.0 . I wouldn't call it an indigenous engine.
They should develop an UAV with 300-350kg MTOW like Barzan A5000. A5000 can carry 2 MAM-L equilavent munitions. You can transport them in a single truck, control it from that truck, can take off and land from unprepared runways; perfect for high sortie strikes. With 70-90km control range.
