Strategic collaborations from TÜBİTAK BİLGEM


TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, which brings critical capabilities to Turkey's defense, this year. At the 16th IDEF'23 Fair, it signed cooperation on defense issues. During the ceremonies, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM signed strategic cooperation protocols with the Ministry of National Defense Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Defense Department, HAVELSAN and Saudi Arabia's defense organization INTRA.

With the "Cooperation Protocol for CBRN Defense" signed between the Ministry of National Defense CBRN Department and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, studies will be carried out in which military/civilian systems will be developed and produced for the CBRN defense of the gains to be obtained from these studies.

The protocol also plays a major role in Turkey's development of national defense products with its own means and reduces its dependence on foreign sources, while supporting domestic technologies for the defense industry.

TÜBİTAK BİLGEM's laser technology and capabilities are internationally


TÜBİTAK BİLGEM also cooperated internationally within the scope of IDEF 2023. A cooperation agreement on trainings on electronic warfare technologies and a goodwill agreement on joint R&D studies on laser technologies were signed between INTRA Defense Technologies, one of the important defense companies of Saudi Arabia, and TÜBİTAK BİLGEM. TÜBİTAK BİLGEM also signed the “Electronic Warfare Laboratories and Training Product and Service Supply Agreement” to work together with HAVELSAN in Qatar.

In addition to these, TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal attended the protocol ceremonies held with TAI, ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, MKE and KOÇ Defense within the scope of the 16th International Defense Industry Fair IDEF held in Istanbul.

I was just about to post the news about Aselsan signing an EO deal with Roketsan for 11.9 million and was gonna say hopefully it's for KMC.

This is great news. Now that we have local EO, number of KMCs in service will greatly increase. It was less than 10.

I wish we had more info about what it entails. HvKK indeed have 20 Cougars, 6 of them are tasked with CSAR. Will those more specialized ones get a more special package? What about the 20+ something Cougars in use with KKK?

Re HvKK Cougars, I believe all 20 have nose mounted FLIR and ground following radars, while CSAR versions also have a door mounted winch and also detachable 20mm gun pods exist. Some models also have IR lowering exhaust modifications. Anyone with more info on this particular fleet's differences?

The role of IRIS-100 and Yildirim-100 is understood.
The first is IR missile warning system that detected the missiles launched and relayed the information to Yildirim-100 (DIRCM). Which then shoots highly accurate laser beam directly to the missile IR seeker and successfully throws it outside of its trajectory.

However, LIAS-100 (the laser warning receiver) detects the incoming laser and then what?
The helicopter just take a turn and avoid the missile?
Or am I missing something?

LIAS-100 (the laser warning receiver) is a passive laser warning system against both for laser range finders and laser guidance systems, enabling the aircrew to take evasive action. Most probably 360 degrees around and +/- 45 degrees in elevation of the helicopter like its contemporaries

No offense , but I doubt evasion with helicopter against incoming guided missiles would be as easy as it looks.


IMHO, while the introduction of Aselsan's Yildirim-100 greatly improves the platform's survivability against IR seeking missiles with hard kill DIRCM, laser guided manpads lile starstreak and RBS-70 remains a significant threat to rotary wing aviation.

infact AN/AVR-2A on AH-64A/D, MH-47E, MH-60K, OH-58D, EH-60A does the exact same job

I know. The same situation applies to all of those platforms.

My argument is, there's need to be some sort of hard kill capability against laser guided missiles also lile DIRCM agaisn IR missiles. Just mere warning is not gonna be enough.
