"Let them embarrass me if they can, I'll be satisfied."

I wrote this back in 2018 on TF-X. And today, I am so, so happy to be proven wrong and embarrassed. What a great day to be alive to have witnessed this event, even though I had to be away for the day and keep my excitement to myself while viewing the videos on mute. Those young engineers and technicians who gave their all to make this thing fly and land safely have the gratitude of this country on their hands.

Hard part is complete, now to the harder parts, it's just beginning.

Look at this big boy!

The first flight of the Turkish prototype of the fifth generation fighter KAAN took place today. The KAAN fighter has been developed by Turk Ucak Sanayi since 2017. The KAAN fighter should replace the American-made Turkish F-16 fighters and may compete with the F-35 and F-22 aircraft. The Ukrainian Air Force also plans to purchase the KAAN fighter. It is worth noting that the development of the fighter will continue until 2028, then they plan to begin its serial production. Developers need to improve the active phased array radar and aircraft engines. At the moment, the aircraft cannot carry out supersonic flight at cruising speed; engine development is one of the most difficult stages in the development of the aircraft. The flight of the KAAN fighter lasted 13 minutes, it reached an altitude of 2400 meters and a speed of 425 km/h.

I am so happy i didnt even realize the irst and eots enclosures were missing until i read the article 😅
First it's "another Qaher 313", then the prototype emerges and it's "it will be years before it flies, if it does", after it flies it's now "not stealth but reduced observability", tomorrow it's gonna be engine is this and that. To summarize, they will never hand it to you if they're not decent objective people. You can never expect them to concede, you just have to make progress to force them into new fault-findings.

Everybody quiettt..
I was waiting for this, it makes me happy too see they are aware of the challenges ahead, and they know what to do, or what they are currently doing. Unlike some claim it is not a project accelarated out of nowhere, it has a good foundation beneath. Hope the rest will be completed in such manner. Allah yollarini acik etsin.

And elevator motion is explained by the test pilot. Damn he is the calmest man i met.

Oh i love Qaher, it looks exotic. Was it 6th or 7th gen? I missed that but it looks so cool.

From the Pilot:

- Aircraft was sending over 10.000 real time data to ground

- Test control center consists of 50 engineers from 15 different disciplines. They are able to follow the flight much earlier than I felt or saw.

- They gave clearance to me every stage of flight

- Following pilot monitoring the external view of the aircraft in case of leaking fuel.

- Movement of horizontal stabilizers are normal behavior of control characteristics of aircraft because flight control computer wants to preserve take off very precisely during low speed

I cannot get over the feeling that this aircraft, as we see it today, has been made possible in large part by the Americans by denying F-35s to Turkey.

Thank you america for doing your part to Make Turkey Great Again !

I believe that, had the F-35 been in service with Turkey, the KAAN would be largely a prestige project today. The design would not have been so ambitious, the development speed would certainly have been significantly slower, and the Turkish government could conceivably at some point get cold feet on the project because the cost of bringing it into service is likely in the range of $20-40 billion (that is my guesstimate, of course).

As it is, denying F-35s to Turkey has been a gigantic blunder by the US.

The KAAN, as a fully domestic heavyweight air superiority stealth fighter, is the first benefit of this move to Turkey.

In a few years, when the Siper Block 2 and Block 3 complete development, we will see the other benefit because I expect that Turkey will want to have a domestic equivalent of the 9M96E2 and the 48N6E3 missiles from the S-400 system which they can now reverse engineer without worry.

Now TAI....get us that engine.
I totally agree. And the list is endless.

National Interest is a rag that isn't even worth sharing, let alone taking seriously on anything.

It's truly a great accomplishment. But it was only a matter of time once the prototype first rolled out.

I don't see a luneberg lens, so I guess low RCS may have got verified up in the air for first time.

There will be a huge amount of debrief and analysis for lot of av-geeks to do in general for some time now.
