Putin Is Running Out of Time to Achieve Breakthrough in Ukraine

📍Russia made limited progress with Ukraine short on weapons
📍Ukraine halts Russian attack as billions in arms start flowing

For months, Russia’s army has made only limited gains on the battlefield against Ukrainian troops starved of weapons and ammunition. That’s a growing challenge for President Vladimir Putin as his military’s advantage starts to erode.

With Kyiv now taking delivery of billions of dollars in fresh arms from its US and European allies, the window for a Russian breakthrough is narrowing even as it continues to fire missiles and drones at Ukrainian cities including energy infrastructure.

A Russian attempt to open a new front in Ukraine’s northeast Kharkiv region already appears bogged down without achieving Putin’s goal of creating a buffer zone along the border. Ukraine claims to be inflicting “very high losses” on Russian troops in battles around the town of Vovchansk.

Russia’s strategy of attrition to exhaust Ukraine’s forces is “very expensive and bloody for the Russian army itself,” said Ruslan Pukhov, head of the Moscow-based Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies. “It can lead to excessive exhaustion of forces on the Russian side, which in turn, gives Ukrainians a chance to counter attack.”

While the policy avoids social tensions inside Russia over the war, it’s unlikely to allow the army to amass enough troops for a successful offensive in Ukraine, according to Pukhov, the Moscow-based military analyst. “For a real breakthrough the Kremlin would need far more people,” he said.

Putin said in December that Russia had 617,000 troops deployed in Ukraine. At a meeting with foreign media in St. Petersburg late Wednesday, he appeared to imply that some 10,000 Russian troops a month were being killed or wounded, by claiming the total was five times lower than Ukrainian losses he put at 50,000.

Ukraine rejects such estimates of its casualties. Zelenskiy said in February his military had lost 31,000 soldiers since the start of the war.

Russia hasn’t translated its battlefield advantages into major gains because its commanders “waste manpower in pursuit of their goals and Ukrainian forces are effective on the defense when they are supplied with men and materiel,” said Dara Massicot, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “There are still meaningful limits to Russian military power.”

Himars strikes inside Russia are having an immediate effect in halting Vladimir Putin’s new invasion into northern Ukraine, officials have told The Telegraph.

The high-powered precision missiles that the US finally gave permission to be fired across the border last week have destroyed key missile launch sites

UK has also said Ukraine can use UK-supplied weapons as it wishes. I think most donors will say the same soon. The days of Russia taking pot shots at Ukraine from Russia with impunity look like they are drawing to a close.

I am also extremely suprized how Europe continues to support Ukraine so strongly considering how many people are against it, all the people I know in my country and outside my country in europe (and I know a lot) are against this support for ukraine, every single one.
Of course they are not supporting the west abandoning ukraine to whatever russia wants to do with it, but instead push for a settled negotiation and try to end the war and so many deaths that it is bringing daily as soon as possible.
Quite suprizing how the voice of the people matters zero, and yet the media pushes out huge propaganda for this, and the leaders just do what they want.

What you call democracy in the West does not allow the people to act against the interests of the established order. It does not make it possible. So yes, democracy is only valid up to a point...

I mean just saturate with more NATO C4I capability integrated with HIMARs behind every blade of grass possible....while more airforce and other ground components are brought online for Ukraine in short and mid term to augment those.

The problem for Russia is always its logistical nodes. These pop up whenever/wherever they try to force concentrate....dulling their number advantage seriously.

Without the adequate protected logistical nodes for your forces, it turns into what it has now....a slow crawl here and there, utterly reliant on infantry mostly (given huge logistical penalties on armour and artillery whatever number you have deployed), and at great cost.

Its too much for Russia to handle, hence the large amount of blab each month and the selective reel propaganda.... but nothing to show for it concretely for what has been invested. The long term costs are going to be extra punishing on Russia too, complete exclusion from Europe where they are closest to for markets and any residual soft-power dynamics (there's a reason the oligarchs all were almost entirely Europe-focused).

These will continue even with any ceasefire or peace deal brokered under whichever future admins of major players. Putin legacy in Russia is going to be a pretty crap one in the end long term....when all the long term costs are added to what Russia has already done to itself previously by its own hand.

In situations like this, leaders must do what is right, not what is popular with the electorate. Russia has worked hard to spread its propaganda in Europe, and many people (like you and your friends) believe Putin’s lies and are willing to allow Russia to grab land by force.

This is when leaders need to ignore the part of the population that has been indoctrinated by the enemy, and to continue the support for their ally. Europe needs to win this war. Ukraine is part of the European project and will join the EU in the future, so the current war is between the EU and Russia. Europeans must not allow Russia to take any land from a country that will soon join them.

Fortunately, European leaders know more about geopolitics than the average citizens who would rather allow Russia to win the war just to get the gasoline price a few eurocents lower.

Europe needs to support Ukraine as long as it takes to win the war. Even if Trump wins in the US and American support fades, Europe will need to step up its aid and ensure a Ukrainian victory. Anything else is a disastrous defeat for the European Union. This is the moment of truth for the EU, when it needs to show its usefulness and resolve.

Like I said, democracy in the West is fraudulent.

Give em time, The US needed quite a few years after Tet to actually listen to the people and stop their involvement in Vietnam

Faces of Ukro new recruits, there's a huge chance that they will die from exhaustion or cardiac arrests from the shell shock.

The Ukrainian nation will vanish, there's no stopping it.

Colleague, don't try to change the subject. We are talking about the “disappearance” of the Russian “stealth”SU57
This is interesting! ;)

Losing a single plane is nothing in the grand scheme of thing.

Actually in a few months, UAC will deliver the improved Su-57M with AL-51 engine, so this loss is not a big deal

The problem is almost NOBODY wants Ukraine to join the EU or NATO, all those talks are just because Russia invaded poor little Ukraine.
The truth is Ukraine is a corrupt and d*rty country and is unwanted in Europe by the majority of people.
Ukraine was part of the USSR, so it's the same people as In Russia, yet Russia is the bad horrible mean corrupt guy and Ukraine is a saint right.
People are not st*pid.

SU 57 – only 20 pieces. And there are 50,000,000 Ukrainians. They will not disappear anywhere.
Glory to Ukraine!

When I said Ukrainian nation will vanish, I mean their nationhood.

sure I'm ok if the Russians didn't wholesale massacre them until they go extinct, but at the very least the Ukrainians will lose their homeland, so in the future people will address them either by calling them :

  1. Ukrainians, subject of Russia
  2. Ukrainians citizens of the Russian federation

Y'know @Gary, you really don't need to sound so giddy at the thought of Ukraine being annihilated. Most Russian migrants living in Asia tend to at least be a bit more subtle about their genocidal tendencies.

Well, this is war, and Ukraine has lost their right to exist a long time ago.

They should accept reality and surrender. Maybe the Russians will forgive them and be lenient to the loser.

Russian loss=no big deal, Ukrainian loss=time to surrender?

One Su-57 more, one Su-57 less is not of any consequence in the same way as one kilometre of fields won or lost is of no consequence.
