I found this more traditional version (I always like the older stuff the best heh):

It makes sense he like that song, he is thinking of Selanik (Salonica) if I am not mistaken...his birthplace.

This remind me of lot of partition songs/poems for our old Hindustan...people that were born on other side to where they are now.... and live the pain and bitterness of what partition did....what they left behind and can never have or even see again.
