Educational activities flourish in Operation Euphrates Shield area​

While the traces of terrorism in the region have been erased, educational activities have also returned to normal with the reconstruction of damaged schools and the opening of new institutions​

It has been five years since Turkey launched its Operation Euphrates Shield against Daesh terrorist group elements in northern Syria. Since then, in the region that was cleared from terrorism, around 700 schools have been made ready for education, enabling people living in the region to access their right to education.
Based on Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, Turkey launched the operation on Aug. 24, 2016, using its right of self-defense to eradicate terrorist elements, primarily Daesh, which threatened its national security, and provide border security in northern Syria.

Turkey attaches great importance to ensuring that individuals living in areas that have been safely liberated from the occupation of terrorist groups in Syria have access to their right to education.

In the fifth year of the operation, with the support of Turkey, the traces of terrorism were erased in the region, and the quality of education increased during this period.

The idle schools in the region were renovated and repaired, and new schools were built in the regions where needed. In this context, around 200,000 students attended kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and high school classes last year in approximately 700 schools that were prepared for education with the support of the Ministry of National Education in the Euphrates Shield Operation region.

The curriculum determined by the Syrian Interim Government is being taught in schools where more than 8,500 teachers were employed in the academic year last year.

Gaziantep University carries out higher education activities in northern Syria with the presidential decree. In this direction, two faculties and one vocational school have been established in the Euphrates Shield Operation region within the university so far.

The units established were planned in line with the demands of the local councils and by taking into account the education and training needs in the region.

Also, with the decision with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, activities have started for the establishment of a medical school and a vocational school of health services in the town of Çobanbey in the north of Syria.

The health personnel who will be trained in the medical faculty will contribute to the services provided to the people of the region.

Bera Molla, one of the civilians in al-Bab, said in a statement to Anadolu Agency (AA) that education institutions prior to the operation had been badly damaged during the civil war, "After the Euphrates Shield Operation, the schools in the region were repaired and made ready for education. The quality of education increased with the support provided."

Emphasizing that the children who have been away from education are back at their school desks, Molla thanked everyone who contributed.

Ammar Kalef, a civilian from al-Bab, pointed out that education activities in schools stopped during the period of Daesh occupation before the operation.

"The schools in the district were used by terrorist organizations for different purposes. After the successful conclusion of the operation, the damaged schools were renovated and reopened," he said.

Zekeriya Ahmed, one of the civilians, stated that he was pleased with the educational opportunities provided, and said: "Our children had the opportunity to continue their unfinished education. Turkey accelerated the process even more with the support it gave to the local councils in the region. Before the operation, our children could not go to school. After the operation, the students who were away from education and just started school got a real education and diploma. We are pleased with the quality of education provided. We thank Turkey for its support."

Huseyin Ayid also said: "Daesh, which used schools for terrorist purposes, turned the school buildings into prisons and ammunition stores." Ayid thanked Turkey for its support of the education campaign.

On the first day of the operation, the Syrian town of Jarablus, which borders the Karkamış district of Turkey's southeastern Gaziantep province, was liberated from terrorist elements. On Feb. 23, 2017, the northwestern town of al-Bab was freed from Daesh terrorists.

During the operation, an area of 2,055 square kilometers (793 square miles) between the two towns was also cleared from terrorist groups in 217 days. Turkish soldiers and the Syrian National Army (SNA) eliminated more than 3,000 Daesh terrorists in almost seven months.

On March 29, 2017, then-Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced that the operation was successfully completed. At the end of the operation, Turkey focused on providing security and stability in the region to create the necessary conditions for the return of civilians displaced due to terrorism.

To that end, security forces and officials trained in Turkey started operating in the region. Through Turkey's initiatives and support in health, education and public services, the population in the region has reached almost 2 million.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents – namely, the Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019) operations.

When the Syrian civil war started it was our perfect chance to form a safe zone and even enforce non fly zone.

But nah we just waited and done nothing. While the Americans and Russians gone in while the ypg/pkk and isis appeared.

What you have is a big clusterfck of epic proportions.

Man its demoralising to know that the FSA had 60% of Syria was close to taking Assad out. Assad was planning on leaving the country.

Seriously Erdogan's inactions piss me off so bad!! He does this so many times its fustrating.

The situation in Operation Euphrates Shield and Operation Olive Branch areas is very tense. The Syrian National Army gave a command to all the units within the Azm Operation Room to mobilize. This decision comes after Hamza Special Forces and Suleyman Shah Division decided to leave the operations room.

The HQs of Hamza Special Forces, Suleyman Shah Division, Shuqur Ash-Shimal and Muntasir Billah are currently besieged on the order of SNA command.

The groups stated that the reason for their withdrawal is "unfair representation, lack of fair principle for representation, not answering the request for creating of new and fair mechanism for representation within the operations room".

Just a reminder that those are the groups of which the names are always connected to criminal activities like smuggling. This decision comes after the military efficiency of the Azm Operations Room increases to new levels after successful strikes against Regime and YPG targets.

No, if the americans leave, which there is now an increasing possibility, the Russians will try to get the PKK under its own umbrella but they will also fail with that because we basically will have a longer arm once the americans leave. At the end its right now the americans stopping us from going after the PKK not the Russians but once they leave we will be more flexible also with regards to tel rifaat as well.

They will have to face the consequences for doing certain things they shouldnt have done, I already see the russians making their moves by the end of this decade on certain small states in eastern europe.

Zero chance of that happening. If you read the 2021 NATO Communique, 1) they are intending to fast-track Georgia and Ukraine's membership, process has been finally approved for both, 2) Article 5's limitations have been severely expanded where any individual member can call it in at any time and 3) NATO is severely expanding their defensive capabilities in Europe, including anti-missile defense without any regard for whether it pisses off Russia or not. Russia's geopolitical meddling is about to get even more difficult.

A couple of days ago we had a 5th anniversary of Operation Euphrates Shield. Nazli Celik presented a very good documentary named "The soldiers of hope" about the whole situation and not known details about the operation were revealed including the memories of Special Forces Command OKK personnel about the countless pushes and especially the memories about the Aqil hill overwatching the hospital in Al Bab where we gave 16 martyrs. The documentary is presented with the assistance of the Ministry of National Defence.

Just as in the 1000 years of history in Anatolia from the Selcuks to the Ottomans and from the Ottomans to the Republic of Turkey the Turkish Nation will continue to be the voice and the guarantor for the future existence of the oppressed. In opposition to the games of imperial powers for the forced changing of the borders of this region the Turkish Nation will continue its fight so that the people of the Middle East can live like brothers and sisters. For that purpose there will be both political and military fight. This fight will be just like the 72 fighter jets that took off to participate in Operation Olive Branch in the honor of the 72 martyrs we gave in Operation Euphrates Shield.
