IRSTs are not impacted by any features on the targeted aircraft designed to reduce its radar cross-section and are immune to electronic warfare attacks intended to disrupt radar waves and other radio frequency emissions. This makes them valuable alternatives to traditional radars, especially when it comes to operations where stealthy enemy threats or heavy electronic warfare jamming is expected. Separate IRST and EOTS capabilities on the TF-X could be beneficial in various ways. Not necessarily it depends upon requirement , the IRST that we are developing works in SWIR + MWIR region. Though IRST carries some extra sensors such as day camera and LRF but DAS can be upgraded with dual band detectors.DAS is not optimized for IRST tho, it is 360° short-mid range system for MWS.
LWIR is better than MWIR for IRST
If you want long range IRST that gets effected less by weather, you need LWIR.Not necessarily it depends upon requirement , the IRST that we are developing works in SWIR + MWIR region. Though IRST carries some extra sensors such as day camera and LRF but DAS can be upgraded with dual band detectors.
Short Wave InfraRed(SWIR) spectral imager is good at detecting difference between materials and penetrating fog and mist.If you want long range IRST that gets effected less by weather, you need LWIR.
Using 2 or more seekers would mean the sensor suite would get bigger, there is no IRST for F-35 except EOTS for shorter range and a limited axis.
And yeah if you make that DAS suite to accommodate different sensors with different cooling and most importantly, more wide arc and better stabilisation, you end up with IRST
