What are the technical or economic problems with hydrogen powered propulsion as of right now? Can those be overcome, and would it make way for some kind of energy revolution?

No, they are NOT same. Toyota is using Hydrogen Fuelcells to power their cars. Basically they are still EV but instead of Li-Ion batteries, they use fuelcells. Fuelcells generate electricity and electric motors drive the car. However, this announcement is something very new and I dont remember seeing this anywhere else

wait does the fact that it is a combustion engine means that it will still be environmentally harmful? what would be the point of a Hydrogen powered internal combustion then?

That engine will produce water, not carbon dioxide. They use the same fuel but use different methods to produce energy from it.

If you burn hydrogen with oxygen you end up with water. It is not harmful to the environment. The real problem is storing hydrogen.

The only profitable way of using hydrogen to drive a truck is when someone produces hydrogen on the cheap as a byproduct of some other production and you fill up your tank right from the source of hydrogen production cheaply. A big trucking company can do this if there is a hydrogen producer on its routes.

Hydrogen powered propulsion is not new. In fact it is old.
There is known issue and it is the main obstacle ( which make this propulsion to become at mass)
The known issue is When system produce Hydrogen you need Storage. Then problem is start showing up.
Hydrogen is Extremely Reactive in other words"Hydrogen molecules react with numerous compounds and elements".
At end there is no Hydrogen fuel in you Storage Tank.

Example:
You fuel you car tank with hydrogen and if weather is normally hot "summer" after couple of hours hydrogen fuel just react with you tank material and it fuel is gone.
No fuel No driving

I think you need to re investigate this issue in detail again.
Atomic Hydrogen is very reactive. But…
Molecular Hydrogen, H2 is very stable especially at room temperature.
To obtain atomic hydrogen you need to pass molecular hydrogen through temperatures in excess of 2500K
Stored hydrogen is molecular hydrogen (H2).


Problem with hydrogen is storage. It has to be kept in high pressure containers to achieve the volume densities needed to get high quantities, for long distance driving.
Hydrogen is difficult to store due to its low volumetric energy density. It is the lightest of and simplest of all elements, being lighter than helium, and so is easily lost into the atmosphere. Solution lies in high pressure containers.

Very expensive to produce 100% renewable Hydrogen, it is sourced from NG and that is useless. It requires pressurized tanks to store, which increases cost of storage, it requires very complicated engines or fuel cells to produce energy. If it is cheap, then you basically driving a bomb.. These are the century old problems of Hydrogen.

Highest energy density of any fuel is hydrogen. There are still issues of getting it ready for primetime. Storage is one of them. There are some research about Boron Nitride powder being crushed with Hydrogen gas. They release it once they warmed up. There was a university research on it. This site mentions it:
Second problem is sourcing the hydrogen. Natural gas wells provide 'free hydrogen' but there are also studies on speeding up electrolysis of water to generate hydrogen

Yeah, axial electric motors have extreme power density and better torque graphs. Radial electric motors have higher total power output but have lower energy density and worse torque graphs compared to axial eclectic motors. Quark combines the best of both worlds (axial and radial electric motors)
