Yes it's not meaningful to expect people to fly 44 hours without sleep, toilet and food surprisingly. Wouldn't wanna be in the place of U2 spy plane pilots though

They did get something to eat, but as tube food like the astronauts.
They probably wore diapers to go to the toilet, but it certainly wasn't cool 😂.

Great Service from TUBITAK to Our Researchers!

MareNostrum 5, one of the world's most advanced supercomputers in which Turkey is a partner, was inaugurated on 21 December 2023 with the participation of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. MareNostrum 5, which is equivalent to the total capacity of approximately 380,000 laptops in the medium and high segment at the Barcelona Supercomputer Centre (BSC-CNS), has a total performance of 314 petaflops, that is, the processing power in 1 second is very high.

Ranked 8th in the world

Under the EuroHPC Joint Initiative, of which Turkey has been a member since 2019, consisting of the European Union, European countries and other partners, different countries have established consortiums and made major investments to have the strongest supercomputing infrastructures and ecosystem in Europe. MareNostrum 5, a supercomputer established as part of EuroHPC at the Barcelona Supercomputer Centre in Spain, is operated by a consortium of Spain, Turkey and Portugal and has achieved great success by ranking 8th in the world in the Top 500 ranking in November.

Enabling new scientific breakthroughs

MareNostrum 5 will provide access to state-of-the-art HPC (High Performance Computing) infrastructure and services to the scientists and industry of the member countries with a general purpose computing cluster as well as a graphics processor supported accelerator cluster.

MareNostrum 5 is a supercomputer with capabilities that will enable new scientific breakthroughs in studies such as drug and vaccine development, virus spread simulations, artificial intelligence and big data applications, as well as global problems such as climate change and renewable energy.

Turkey has been a member of the EuroHPC Joint Venture since 2019

TUBITAK ULAKBIM represents Turkey in MareNostrum 5 consortium under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Technology.

Turkey joined the EuroHPC Joint Venture on 2 April 2019 as the 28th member country. Following Turkey's participation in the initiative, a joint proposal was submitted by Turkey, Spain and Portugal to the "Precursors to Exascale" call and this proposal was accepted at the board of directors meeting held in Luxembourg on 4-5 June 2019.

With the accepted proposal, Turkey gained direct access to one of the world's leading supercomputers in addition to the TRUBA supercomputer service that has been provided by TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM for twenty years. The system is expected to be open for general use in February 2024

TUBITAK Vice President İsmail Doğan and TUBITAK ULAKBIM Director Mehmet Mirat Satoğlu attended the opening ceremony of MareNostrum 5 on behalf of Turkey.

Changes continue. After Gürcan Okumuş, now head of BMC Murat Yalçıntaş resigns.

Is he the one that spinned BMC around after the disasters

They are talking about humanoid robots. Another field some startups can go unicorn.

For a few million euros, you can build your own supercomputer, e.g. in the form of several thousand GeForce 4090 graphics cards, even with the retail graphics card versions.
The Chinese do this all the time, despite sanctions, and the Americans are totally annoyed by it. It's a shame that TAI, TÜBITAK & Co. don't have the foresight to become active in this area themselves.
Especially in the simulations of material strength, heat resistance etc., a lot could be outsourced to supercomputers in order to obtain an improved formula.
The calculation of aerodynamics and changes in flight behavior at different altitudes, wind and weather in the aircraft could also be further improved by running hundreds of simulations in parallel.
The industry has even gone so far as to use AI software to check software for errors in order to detect sources of error in the program code, especially in AVIONICS and in target/board computers of fighter aircraft, tanks, submarines and ships, it makes sense to improve these further.
The possibilities of using simulations to work on certain tasks in advance, before a prototype is produced for physical testing, are endless.
I think it is a shame that Turkey does not see a need for action in supercomputers and is dependent on other countries. Especially in military and space technology, everything should be done to ensure that these calculations, if any, are not done on supercomputers outside Turkey but locally.

TAI does use some Nvidia solution, but yeah we are embargoed for workstation products which are often required for compatibility with the kind of software you would use for simulations etc.

We are too dependent on the government and state-owned enterprises. We need large enterprises like Samsung or Sony to support our development.

TÜBITAK
Turkey's most advanced computer is counting the days to be put into service. The computer, which has more than 500 servers and 56 thousand cores, will put Turkey in the 'Top500' list of the world's most advanced computers, and thousands of researchers and companies will benefit.

TAI
TAI shook hands for a new supercomputer with 50 thousand cores!
TAI has added a new one to its infrastructure investments in information technologies in order to perform the needed analysis. Announced by TAI, the new supercomputer with 50 thousand cores will work together with the 20 thousand-core supercomputer it had in the past years.

Finland - Lumi 2,752,704 cores
Italy - Leonardo 1,824,768 cores

10 and 50 thousand cores is a funny number for a country like Turkiye. We should exceed 1 million cores.

Mashallah, the foresight and planning of our rulers is impeccable. I guess they are waiting for the embargo for that.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Ankara Zoo was appointed as Deputy Director of ULAKBIM, an important unit of TÜBİTAK. I wonder what happened to him, with all the resignations and dismissals.

"The EuroHPC JU is a legal and funding entity created in 2018 to enable the European Union and EuroHPC participating countries to coordinate their efforts and pool their resources with the objective of making Europe a world leader in supercomputing. The mission of the EuroHPC JU is:

  • to develop, deploy, extend and maintain in the EU a federated, secure hyperconnected supercomputing, quantum computing, service and data infrastructure ecosystem;
  • to support the development and uptake of demand-oriented and user-driven innovative and competitive supercomputing and quantum computing systems based on a supply chain that will ensure the availability of components, technologies and knowledge;
  • and, to widen the use of that supercomputing and quantum computing infrastructure to a large number of public and private users.
To date the EuroHPC JU has already procured eight supercomputers, located across Europe: LUMI in Finland, LEONARDO in Italy, Vega in Slovenia, MeluXina in Luxembourg, Discoverer in Bulgaria, Karolina in the Czechia, MareNostrum5 in Spain, and Deucalion in Portugal."

I am only talking about Turkiye, not partnerships. I think this is the way it should be according to our growing population and our technological and military development.

Am I wrong?

Compared to the other countries, this is very poor, our super computers don't have to be in the top twenty supercomputers in the world, but 250000-30000 CPU cores Intel/AMD would be very realistic targets for TÜBITAK, TAI and Baykar.
If these could be networked with each other, you would have almost a million, something really decent for carrying out research, analyses and simulations.

You can see how mendacious Europe is, and this is not due to the democratic deficits that Turkey is accused of.
It's because you simply don't dance to their tune.

Backbone has really become a foreign word today.
