Fiber optic cables produced at Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM) successfully passed critical tests and acceptance and received its first contract from ROKETSAN.


Fiber optic cables, produced at Bilkent University National Nanotechnology Research Center (UNAM), owned by a few countries in the world and of great importance for many sectors, have successfully passed critical tests and acceptance and started to be used in the local and national defense industry.

Bilkent University UNAM chief researcher Bülend Ortaç, stated that as a result of the latest R&D studies at UNAM, they started to produce polarization protected (PM) fiber optics, which have been produced in only a few countries since the 1980s, and that these have successfully passed all the critical tests required for the defense industry.

Stating that the development of PM fiber optics requires a difficult process, Ortaç said:

"The production of fiber optic cables, which are thinner than a hair strand, requires high technology. Since it is a critical technology, there was no written document in the literature or any source on how to produce the composite structure. Stating that fibers are used in special areas where critical equipment such as inertial measurement units (IOM) are located on land and air-sea platforms, from the tactical level to the above-navigation level, Ortaç said, "Gyroscopic devices have been developed to control the movement of ships and aircraft. In automatic flight control and route determination in aircraft." "It has important usage areas. Fiber cables are a critical technology for this and many similar platforms." said.

Ortaç gave the following information about the fiber optics they developed:

"The developed fiber optics have an important function in reducing Turkey's foreign dependency in this field. After producing the fibers, we qualified them with our own infrastructure. Then, we worked jointly with companies in the important defense industry organizations of our country. The fibers successfully passed critical tests and acceptance in their own field environments. We also provided the first supply needed by an important defense industry company. In other words, UNAM was one of the sources from which the domestic defense industry met its fiber optic needs. PM fibers are the first commercial product produced by UNAM in its infrastructure with its own resources and expertise. Critical for the defense industry "This technology will increase Turkey's competitiveness in the international arena with domestic production."

UNAM Infrastructure Manager Özgür Yıldırım emphasized that the center is the only organization with fiber production infrastructure in Turkey.

Stating that they made large-scale production of polarization-protected fibers and delivered them to ROKETSAN for the first time, Yıldırım said, "Thus, we have first implemented the critical technology that can be used on all platforms. We have the infrastructure to make larger-scale mass production according to future demands." he said.


Referring to the importance of strategic products in the defense industry, Yıldırım said, "You cannot buy some defense industry products even if you have money. With this strategic product, we have broken foreign dependency and provided millions of dollars of profit to our country. Now, we will have the possibility of selling fiber optics abroad in the future." said.

Explaining that UNAM continues its work within the scope of the 1004 Center of Excellence Support Program, which brings together the public, industry and universities in Turkey with the understanding of TÜBİTAK's "developing together and achieving together", Yıldırım said, "UNAM is the manager within the scope of the program and TUSAŞ, Vestel "The A1 platform, in which Şişecam and Bilkent University, Eskişehir Technical University, Abdullah Gül University and TOBB ETÜ are involved as project executing organizations, aims to bring value-added technologies to our country for domestic and national production purposes with its advanced R&D studies." he said.

Great news!!! strange thing is after reading such good news we can understand how infinitly complex any project like KAAN can be, there are endless sub systems and components we have to deal with, every advancment is just a beging.

just as an example these two companies are responsible from F 22's fiber optic components

This is an absurdly low amount of production capacity. Small gun workshops in the Blacksea region can reach better figures than this.

An automated welding, unlike the one used in stiffened panel construction lines, that is capable of working on uneven, curved, top-bottom surfaces at once will diminish human factor and related errors (specifically curved space and top-bottom parts) and dramatically can reduce the time spent in welding. This is most suitable for yachts, super yachts, OPVs, patrol vessels, FACs etc. that do not go beyond a size and falls to be inefficient for block building.

Turkey's supercomputer is coming


Turkey's most advanced computer is counting the days to be put into service. The computer, which has more than 500 servers and 56 thousand cores, will put Turkey in the 'Top500' list of the world's most advanced computers, and thousands of researchers and companies will benefit.



Türkiye has taken important steps in catching up with Industry 4.0 in recent years. One of these was the supercomputer, which would revolutionize scientific research and product development for companies.

Turkish National Science e-Infrastructure (TRUBA) will be put into service in early 2024. Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır gave the good news that the supercomputer within TÜBİTAK will begin to serve in the coming days.

Türkiye enters the Top500

The world's supercomputers have a name. The name of Turkey's supercomputer was determined by taking the opinions of various groups in a survey, but it has not been announced to the public yet.

The name is expected to be announced at the computer commissioning ceremony. With this computer, Türkiye will enter the Top500.org list, which lists supercomputers in the world.

There are currently no computers from Turkey on the list. However, there is a computer called 'MareNastrum' in which Turkey is a partner. This computer belongs to some European countries, including Turkey, and the server center is in Spain.

Final tests are being carried out

Tests of the supercomputer that will be put into service from Turkey have been going on for a while. The final tests will be completed before the end of 2023 and will be put into service in the first days of 2024. With the introduction of computers, Turkey will move forward in data storage and big data processing.

While a laptop has 4 or 8 cores, this computer has 56 thousand 448 very powerful processor cores. It will have 126 terabytes of memory and will be cooled with water, not air, due to the enormous energy generated.

Academic studies, industrial research

The supercomputer has more than 504 servers. The computer, which can perform thousands of operations per second, can be used for competitive studies, Artificial Intelligence research and projects, studies that require high technology such as the defense industry, and academic projects and research.

For example, calculations of new technologies that conventionally need to be tested thousands of times can be made flawlessly with the help of these computers.

Digital twins can be extracted. Even calculations of air resistance around a jet aircraft will be able to be performed perfectly. In this way, a huge waste of resources and time will be prevented.

Serious question why doesn't Turkey buy Retail Nvidia Graphics Cards and build a cheap supercomputer with them.
It would be best to have several of these in Goverment, Universities, Research Institutes and Defense Companies and to network the computing capacity.
And the actual special supercomputer for the armed forces shown above.
The Chinese do it all the time and the Americans are totally pissed off about it.
This allows you to build supercomputers really quickly without Limit and very cheaply.

These are retail graphics cards, i.e. freely accessible technology 100 here 100 there ordered via a middleman somewhere in the world and you have thousands of graphics cards.
You do have a point, but that's not the complete picture.

It is a cat and mouse game. The noose keeps tightening for those who employ such measures.

You can't stop it, the second you order through Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, South Korea and some European countries via middlemen it's almost impossible to stop it. It gets even funnier when they even have the purchased own goods stolen from the warehouse, using their own people as a Coup/Heist and bringing them into the country through dark channels.
Then the tracks are covered anyway, they really think they can stop the Chinese Goverment 😂.
Iran has been doing this for years, by Dual Use Goods otherwise they couldn't even build a microwave there for a kitchen 😂.
Let alone drones, cruise missles und High Technology.

These are retail graphics cards,

They really aren't. Each A100 chip costs 10,000 USD. To go anywhere with them needs clustering of many and the interconnect architecture which bumps the cost in 6 figures at least....large networked servers then cost in the millions of dollars.

They are technically graphics cards but really their use is not for graphic processing but for AI design and high scale simulations.

These all have lifetime support/warranty costs from Nvidia frontloaded into the price too....so that makes middlemen loopholes for these price levels both cost prohibitive (since you forfeit that cost by re-selling), restrictive and easy to monitor (unique ID of the chips etc) and bring WTO clauses to bear if any country systematically found engaging in it or shielding companies engaging in it.

The US recently banned export of the nvidia workarounds around the A100 ban (for China export) like the A800 too.

There is a service field that is flourishing far more than the blackmarket (i.e simulation with these chips simply offered for Chinese companies to rent, i.e China's own AI development etc. is largely unhindered), so the results were always limited w.r.t denying application of these chips.

Rather they are to keep the node and interconnect tech away from PRC for some period of time and force PRC to deploy way more HR there and funding there more than it otherwise would have. That's why its packaged with export restrictions on capital machinery as well regarding the new 7nm node.
