NATO Report Terms China A Threat To Euro-Atlantic Security; Beijing Says "victim Paranoia"

In its latest report, NATO has called on devoting more time, political resources, and action to counter the "security threat" posed by "rising China"

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has called for devoting more time, political resources, and action to counter the "security threat" posed by "rising China". In its report NATO 2030, the alliance has recommended setting up a special unit within the Joint Intelligence and Security Division (JISD) to monitor Russia-China cooperation that impacts Euro-Atlantic security.

The report states that the internal political differences between NATO allies are dangerous as they help the "external actors like Russia and China to exploit intra-Alliance differences and take advantage of individual Allies in ways that endanger their collective interests and security".

It further said, "The Alliance should consider establishing a consultative body to discuss all aspects of its security interests with China. It must expand efforts to assess the implications of China's technological development and monitor and defend against any Chinese activities that could impact collective defence, military readiness or resilience in the Supreme Allied Commander Europe's (SACEUR) Area of Responsibility.

"China a grave threat to NATO allies"

The NATO report has recommended that it must adapt to meet the challenges for a "more demanding strategic environment marked by the return of systemic rivalry, persistently aggressive Russia and the rise of China".

"As China in recent decades has proven its willingness to use force against its neighbours, economic coercion and intimidatory diplomacy beyond the Indo-Pacific region, it is likely that in the coming decades' China can challenge NATO's ability to build collective resilience, safeguard critical infrastructure, address new and emerging technologies such as 5G, and protect sensitive sectors of the economy including supply chains," the report said.
In the longer term, China is increasingly likely to project military power globally, including potentially in the Euro-Atlantic area, it added.

"China's military modernisation in all domains, including nuclear, naval, and missile capabilities, introduces new risks and potential threats to the NATO Alliance and to strategic stability," the report said.

"NATO suffering from victim paranoia": China

NATO's report viewing China as a threat to its member nations drew a sharp response from Beijing which mocked the organisation, saying that it is outdated and "has no reason to exist if it does not set an enemy and vigorously hype threats from it."

"The threats are imaginary out of NATO's victim paranoia. China has always upheld peaceful development, posing no military threats to NATO members at all, and stigmatizing Chinese technology development just aims to portray China as an enemy," Beijing said via its mouthpiece Global Times.
China further stated that apart for some joint exercises, the Chinese military has almost never reached the regions cited in the NATO report to prove its increasing reach. "Noting regions such as Atlantic, Mediterranean, and the Arctic, NATO is really hyping up the China threat theory," it said,

The Chinese Foreign Ministry called for NATO to look at China's development in a rational manner and not as a threat to anyone.

If only one of your neighbour is worry maybe you can called it paranoia or so, but most of China neighbour regarding China military build up as a credible threat accompanied by real bully action, not one or two states but most of them worry about China. Starting from Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Australia and even Myanmar considering China as unbearable anymore and so on. You should take the mirror and reflect it for yourself instead accusing other!!!

So you are talking about South China Sea, actually all claimants have overlapping claims in SCS and China is just one of them, Vietnam currently controls most reefs and islands in that region. Claimants stake claims aganist each other, not just against China, so it's fair to say they all have problems with each other.

As for China's neighbors, China has 14 neighbors, most of them enjoy cordial relationship with China.

+China is bordered by 14 countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam. +

It is very LoL on how most of them united at a single issue and that's China is a larger threat for them and spurred more cooperation between them.

Cordial? Right with most of the smaller states enjoying Priviledge to sent envoy a la middle Kingdom heritage. Meanwhile the larger ones see China as a "friend" with benefit and prepared a knife behind their backs

The fear of being small when facing China is always there even if China doesn't do anything. it's a psychological problem. China doesn't control many reefs in the region.

China send more Frigates and OPV to bully other than other claimants, don't forget your bomber overpass near Malaysian reef, that's clear danger indicator as Malaysia is far friendly toward China compared to Indonesia or Philippines but they get such treatment.

US ships also sail everywhere and bombers flying around the globe. Did Chinese ships open fire and bombers drop any bombs in SCS like US did all around the world? and if China is an unreasonable bully, how come smaller countries can manage to control most reefs and islands in SCS? the facts on the ground and your claim just don't add up.

NATO boss says China challenge too great for US alone

By Latika Bourke

December 8, 2020

London: NATO is increasing cooperation with Australia, Japan and South Korea as the trans-Atlantic security alliance prepares for China's rise in the 21st Century.

The move reflects the reality that no single country can combat China on its own, according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg reminded an audience at a virtual event for Politico that NATO was formed to defend democratic values which he said China did not share.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Stoltenberg's remarks are part of a major repositioning from NATO, which was formed after the Second World War to secure peace in Europe, against the threat of the Soviet Union.

NATO's new 2030 vision released last month, which calls for more resources to be devoted to addressing the security challenges posed by China, were part of the alliance's ongoing adaptation to defend its founding principles, which included democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty, Stoltenberg said.

"NATO's about defending those values," Stoltenberg told a forum hosted by Politico.
"We all realise that the global balance of power is changing in a fundamental way, the rise of China is really changing the security environment we face.

"We see that in Hong Kong, we see it in the way they deal with minorities," he said.
Stoltenberg said China's investment in defence, nuclear weapons, missiles and disinformation technologies meant it posed a challenge for NATO members.

"And if anything, the size of China, the military size, their economic size, their achievements in technology, all of that makes NATO even more important because no single ally, not even the biggest one - the United States - can address this alone," he said.

"So I strongly believe that NATO also should be a platform to help create a community of like-minded democracies and that's the reason why we've been reaching out to our partners in the Asia-Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand and we met with them actually last week at the foreign ministerial meeting."

Stoltenberg's comments reflect a sharp repositioning since NATO's last leaders' meeting in London in November a year ago, which was only the first time the alliance discussed China.

NATO's recent independent reflection report said: "Grave risks are posed by China in some critical sectors such as telecommunications, space, cyberspace, and new technologies, as well as disinformation campaigns."

"Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, China has conducted a disinformation campaign in numerous Allied states.
"It has also committed widespread intellectual property theft with implications for Allied security and prosperity, as well as cyber attacks on NATO governments and societies which have been attributed by Allies as originating inside China."

It is in stark contrast to NATO's 2010 Strategic Concept which did not even mention China.
The alliance has faced accusations that it is no longer fit for purpose with French president Emmanuel Macron describing it as "brain dead." It had also come under sustained attack from US President Donald Trump who argued that the United States was disproportionately funding the alliance.

If Nato pushes China and Russia to form an alliance, Nato's days will be numbered.

Most part of Russian lands are in the east, besides, what European countries can do if a conflict broke out in the east? Like they did in Korean war and Vietnam war? They played negligible part in those conflicts.

China never has the colonial mentality which is an inherent part of the western mindset, China is never a threat to the world. Tell me one non western country which was not bullied by the western powers in the past couples of centuries on this planet. A country to end this western domination and bullying will arrive in the human history, be it China or some other non western countries.
